Authors made a comparison between 167 suffers from Scheuermann's disease (SD), 70 adolescence idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and 132 age, sex, height, weight, pubertal developmental stages (Tanner stages) matched controls. The height percentile in 130 cases was also determined. The bone mineral density (BMD) was measured by pQCT on the non dominate sided radial bone. The alkaline phosphatase (AP) level increased at the beginning of puberty and in the puberty in SD. In SD the trabecular Z-score of BMD was significantly decreased in Tanner stage 1 to 4 in both boys and girls. It was not found any si

STUDY DESIGN: The design for this article is a case report.
OBJECTIVES: Reported is the case of a patient with Scheuermann's disease who experienced spastic paraparesis caused by multilevel disc herniations and intraspinal meningeal cyst occurring together.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Although Scheuermann's disease is associated with disc degeneration and calcification, multilevel disc herniations causing neurologic deficit is exceedingly rare.
METHODS: A patient diagnosed with Scheuermann's disease was evaluated by laboratory tests and radiographs because of paresthesin in bilateral lower

SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Hereditary and mechanical factors are considered to be the principal etiologic factors of Scheuermann's disease.
OBJECTIVES: The authors report identical twins presenting similar lesions of localized lumbar osteochondrosis, which were worse in the one twin that practiced strenuous sports activities.
CONCLUSIONS: These observations suggest, at least in some of these patients, a basic role for genetic factors in the occurrence of the disease and an influence of mechanical strain on its severity.

Association of Scheuermann's disease with a thoracic herniated disc compressing the spinal cord is rare but is clearly demonstrated in the case reported here. This confirms the non-fortuitous nature of this association also suggested by the analysis of published cases. The interest of spinal cord angiography and of surgery through a postero-lateral approach are emphasized.

This is the case report of a 42-year-old woman with chronic thoracic pain, nonradicular and refractory to all nonoperative treatment. Radiographs showed the classic findings of Scheuermann's disease, but without abnormal kyphosis. Magnetic resonance imaging scans showed multilevel thoracic disc degeneration typical of long-term Scheuermann's disease. Thoracic discography revealed concordant pain at T6-7 and T7-8. Treatment consisted of an anterior fusion, T5-11, and posterior fusion of T3 through L1, with Cotrel-Dubousset instrumentation. At follow-up, she was pain free and able to work full t

Patients with untreated kyphosis secondary to Scheuermann's disease occasionally develop significant deformities associated with pain in adult life. When these painful deformities do not respond to conservative measures, surgery may be indicated. This report describes a two-stage surgical technique for correction of the deformity. First, an anterior spinal release and fusion is performed and is followed 7-10 days later by a posterior spinal fusion with double L-rod instrumentation. L-rod instrumentation has the advantage that no postoperative immobilization is necessary, which allows the patie

In order to avoid overtreatment or undertreatment of a beginning scoliosis early differentiation of the clinically unimportant concomitant scoliosis of Scheuermann's disease is essential as against early idiopathic scoliosis, spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia and the fixed round back deformity of adolescents. Scheuermann's scoliosis as opposed to idiopathic scoliosis is characterised by the almost complete lack of vertebral rotation (as with spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia), by a localized unilateral narrowing of the intervertebral space in the a.p. x-ray, as well as by a slight Z- or E-pattern, and a

A radionuclide bone scan serendipitously revealed deposition of Tc-99m MDP in multiple lumbar intervertebral disk spaces in a 29-year-old man with extensive trauma to the left femur as a result of a motor vehicle accident. In the authors' experience, alcoholic liver disease or altered weight bearing secondary to prior trauma are not associated with intervertebral radiotracer uptake. Although it is possible that radiographically undetectable microcalcifications in the intervertebral disk spaces associated with degenerative changes, common in Scheuermann disease, account for this unusual finding

BACKGROUND: Scheuermann's disease always occurs in adolescent, and it is uncommon for elderly individuals. The aim of this research is to investigate the different potential pathogenic mechanisms and clinical characteristics of thoracolumbar disc herniation (TLDH) in Scheuermann's disease between elderly and adolescent patients.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data from patients with Scheuermann's disease who underwent surgical treatment for TLDH from a single center between June 2013 and June 2023. Patients were divided into two groups: elderly (≥ 65 years) and adolescent (≤ 20 years),

OBJECTIVES: This paper describes the natural course of irritable hip pain associated with spinal rigidity and pain in the thoracic region with subsequent development of mild kyphosis in a girl with a mutation in the collagen 2 alpha 1 gene (type II collagenopathy).
METHODS: Phenotypic and genotypic characterization was carried out in a 14-year-old girl to identify the underlying pathology of severe irritable hip pain associated with thoracic spinal rigidity and pain. Detailed clinical examination, skeletal survey and genetic testing were performed accordingly. Bernese periacetabular osteotomy

Patients with mechanical lower back pain not uncommonly present to clinicians with anxiety following a diagnosis of "Scheuermann's disease" based on a report of a plain radiograph of the lumbar spine. In most instances, the radiographs show features of lumbar Scheuermann's, rather than the classical adolescent thoracic kyphosis described by Scheuermann in 1920. The purpose of this study was (i) to investigate how often the diagnosis of Scheuermann's disease was made at a District General Hospital in radiological reports sent to local general practitioners (GPs); (ii) to determine the type of "

A radiological study of 50 patients with thoracic Scheuermann's disease revealed two types of lateral spinal curvature. A total of 43 lateral curves was present in 35 of the patients. Thirteen were apical at the same level as the Scheuermann's kyphosis and were due to vertebral-body wedging in the coronal plane; these curves had a mean Cobb angle of 15 degrees, occurred with equal prevalence in boys and girls and were directed equally to right and left. Thirty curves occurred in regions of compensatory lordosis (mean 5.6 degrees) situated above or, more commonly, below the Scheuermann's kyphos

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Scheuermann's disease is characterized by kyphosis and frequently mild back pain. As the level of kyphosis may progress over time, also the level of pain may increase. We evaluated the prevalence of Scheuermann's disease, and their pain, in Swedish elderly men.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS) Study Sweden (n = 3,014) is a population-based prospective observational study of community-living men aged 69-81 years. At baseline, participants answered a questionnaire including history of neck/back pain during the preceding year and characterist

An increase of the physiological kyphosis during growth is defined hyperkyphosis (HK) and, according to the level where the apex of the curve can be retrieved, we can distinguish a thoracic HK and a thoraco-lumbar one, also called junctional kyphosis. Since these conditions can cause pain and esthetics impairments, lead in adulthood to an higher incidence of spinal and shoulder pain, and evolve during growth, it is important to manage this deformity. The aim of this paper was to present the state of the art about HK and its treatment. Scheuermann Disease (SCHK) is the better known cause of HK;

This report provides an overview of the history of the different types of kyphosis (arcuated and angulated forms). Especially tuberculous spondylitis and Scheuermann's disease are pointed out from among the large group of kyphotic diseases. Therefore, Beckhterew's disease, the combination of rickets and kyphosis as well as the dysraphic diseases and constitutional kyphosis caused by faulty posture are only mentioned. These two special types of kyphosis (Scheuermann's disease and tuberculous spondylitis) are presented from the first description with diagnostic findings, the ideas of pathogenesi

BACKGROUND: In contemporary literature few have written in detail on the in-brace correction effects of braces used for the treatment of hyperkyphosis. Bradford et al. found their attempts effective, treating Scheuermann's kyphosis with Milwaukee braces, but their report did not specifically focus on in-brace corrections. White and Panjabi's research attempted to correct a curvature of > 50 degrees with the help of distraction forces, but consequently led to a reduction in patient comfort in the application of the Milwaukee brace. In Germany they avoid this by utitlising braces to treat hyperk
