OBJECTIVES: Scimitar syndrome and pulmonary sequestration (PS) have overlapping features. This accounts for postnatal descriptions of a 'sequestrated lung' in scimitar-syndrome patients. We review the similarities and differences in these two conditions, and the antenatal ultrasound findings that allow correct prenatal identification and differential diagnosis.
METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of prenatally diagnosed cases of scimitar syndrome or PS that underwent fetal echocardiography between January 1995 and November 2004.
RESULTS: There were five cases of PS and six of scimitar

We report a patient with abnormal systemic blood supply to the right lung and right-sided anomalous pulmonary venous drainage to the inferior vena cava (scimitar syndrome or pulmonary venolobar syndrome). In addition, she had an atrial septal defect, underdeveloped right pulmonary artery, an aberrant right bronchus, and tracheobronchomalacia. She improved markedly after palliative interventional closure of her atrial septal defect.

Scimitar syndrome, which involves total or partial anomalous venous drainage of the right lung to the inferior vena cava, is relatively rare and often results in pulmonary hypertension, heart failure and right lung infection. We report here the case of a 1-year-old girl who suffered repeated attacks of bronchospasm after developing pneumonia. She underwent resection of the hypoplastic right lung and showed rapid recovery.

We present 2 cases of Scimitar syndrome with lung sequestration, 1 of which is infant case and the other is adult. A 3-month-old baby was transferred to our hospital because of severe heart failure. Cardiac ultrasonography and angiography revealed atrial septal defect and lung sequestration. Because of critical condition, she underwent emergency operation. After the operation of abnormal lung resection, her general condition improved. We emphasize that the prognosis is influenced by operation timing. A 20-year-old female was admitted for atrial septal defect. We diagnosed Scimitar syndrome and

BACKGROUND: Scimitar syndrome is a rare combination of cardiopulmonary abnormalities found in 1-3 per 1000 live births. Anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery (ALCAPA) is only found in 1 in 250-400 congenital heart disease patients.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the incidence of left circumflex ALCAPA within our referral center's cohort of scimitar syndrome patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A review of medical records, cardiac imaging and operative notes from all patients diagnosed with scimitar syndrome at our center between 1992 and 2016 was undertaken a

BACKGROUND: Scimitar syndrome is a rare congenital heart disease. To evaluate the surgical results, we embarked on the European Congenital Heart Surgeons Association (ECHSA) multicentric study.
METHODS AND RESULTS: From January 1997 to December 2007, we collected data on 68 patients who underwent surgery for scimitar syndrome. Primary outcomes included hospital mortality and the efficacy of repair at follow-up. Median age at surgery was 1.4 years (interquartile range, 0.46 to 7.92 years). Forty-four patients (64%) presented with symptoms. Surgical repair included intraatrial baffle in 38 pati

A female in her 50s presented with chest discomfort and breathing difficulties. An outpatient non-contrasted CT was suspicious for abnormal right pulmonary venous drainage and associated anomalies consistent with a variant of Scimitar syndrome. Subsequent dedicated cardiac imaging confirmed the diagnosis of Scimitar syndrome but a 'congenitally corrected' variant, wherein the single right pulmonary vein appeared to connect to the inferior vena cava but instead coursed in a serpentine fashion, connecting appropriately into the left atrium. This patient represents an anomalous unilateral single

Five patients with scimitar syndrome (three boys, two girls) with a mean age of 3.4 years (range 6 months to 11 years) were studied with two-dimensional and Doppler echocardiography. Four-chamber apical and parasternal short- and long-axis views were obtained, in addition to subcostal views. The anomalous drainage was seen entering the inferior vena cava below the diaphragm in three patients, and in two cases the inferior vena cava was considered normal (both patients had supradiaphragmatic drainage). The anomalous flow velocity pattern was monophasic without reverse flow at atrial contraction

Right pulmonary artery to left atrial fistula is classified based on the right pulmonary artery branching, individual right pulmonary venous drainage, and presence of an aneurysmal segment. A rare association with scimitar syndrome and right lung devoid of blood supply from right pulmonary artery is described in this report. The anatomical and management differences between the different types are highlighted.

Intracaval buffle repair of scimitar syndrome is classically performed under deep hypothermic circulatory arrest or using low-flow modalities of cardiopulmonary bypass with peripheral cannulation. We propose an alternative perfusion approach to the procedure using total intrapericardial cannulation under full-flow normothermic cardiopulmonary bypass.

BACKGROUND: Scimitar syndrome involves congenital anomalous pulmonary venous return to the inferior vena cava. Optimal management remains controversial. We describe the natural history of disease, nonsurgical and surgical outcomes, and risk factors for poor outcomes at our institution.
METHODS: Patients with anomalous pulmonary venous return to the inferior vena cava documented on echocardiography at our institution between January 1994 and January 2015 were reviewed retrospectively. The study protocol IRB-AAAO1805 was approved.
RESULTS: Forty-seven patients were identified, including 20 inf

BACKGROUND: Scimitar syndrome may be corrected using different techniques. Repair using an extracardiac conduit has rarely been performed. This study assessed the intermediate-term outcomes of this technique in adults.
METHODS: From January 2000 to June 2011, 7 adult patients underwent correction with a ringed polytetrafluoroethylene conduit used to connect the scimitar vein (SV) to the left atrium, posterior to the inferior vena cava (IVC). Preoperative and perioperative data were reviewed retrospectively.
RESULTS: All patients (32 ± 10.6 years old) were symptomatic (3 patients were New Yor

Congenital venolobular or scimitar syndrome is a rare congenital cardiopulmonary anomaly consisting in a partial anomalous pulmonary venous drainage, lung hypoplasia, and anomalous systemic arterial supply to the lung. It can associate with other congenital disorders which will confer the clinical presentation and prognosis of these patients. In most of the cases, the therapeutic approach is partial, as anatomy allows only aberrant arterial embolisation. We present a 6-year-old girl with recurrent pulmonary infections, diagnosed as scimitar syndrome with double collector drainage to the inferi

We report two cases of abnormal configuration of the pulmonary venous system of the right lung evaluated with the use of three-dimensional spiral computed tomography (3D-CT). In the first case, an unusual form of scimitar syndrome was detected, consisting of two scimitar veins uniting into a common trunk immediately before their confluence into the inferior vena cava (IVC). The second case concerns a meandering pulmonary vein that followed a circuitous course through the right lung and came in close proximity to the IVC, before draining the entire right lung to the left atrium. In both cases,

We present the case of a 15 months-old male with Scimitar Syndrome associated with ventricular septal defect and pulmonary atresia. The diagnosis was made by cardiac catheterization and angiography and was confirmed by the necropsy. Clinical and surgical considerations of this exceptional association were made. To the best of our knowledge this is the first case reported in the relevant literature.

A 70-year-old male is described who suffered from daily episodes of supraventricular tachycardia that was refractory to oral medical treatment since adolescence. Electrocardiographical and electrophysiological evaluation confirmed atrioventricular nodal re-entrant tachycardia (AVNRT). This arrhythmia commonly occurs in patients without concomitant heart disease. However, in this patient a variant form of the scimitar syndrome was found by coincidence at the age of 56 years. This report describes (1) the variant form of the scimitar syndrome, (2) the coexistence of AVNRT in scimitar syndrome, a

Infantile scimitar syndrome is associated with pulmonary hypertension which can be difficult to manage. We present a three-month-old infant with scimitar syndrome, who eventually developed refractory pulmonary hypertension, posing a significant management challenge. Further workup demonstrated contralateral pulmonary vein stenosis, which is rarely described in scimitar syndrome. Our index case highlights the importance of follow-up cardiac catheterizations in these patients with severe pulmonary hypertension.
