Sex Differences in Defensive Behavior and Venom of The Striped Bark Scorpion Centruroides vittatus (Scorpiones: Buthidae).

Studies of venom variability have advanced from describing the mechanisms of action and relative potency of medically important toxins to understanding the ecological and evolutionary causes of the variability itself. While most studies have focused on differences in venoms among taxa, populations, or age-classes, there may be intersexual effects as well. Striped bark scorpions (Centruroides vittatus) provide a good model for examining sex differences in venom composition and efficacy, as this species exhibits dramatic sexual dimorphism in both size and defensive behavior; when threatened by a

Determination of the Median Lethal Dose and Electrophoretic Pattern of Hottentotta saulcyi (Scorpiones, Buthidae) Scorpion Venom.

BACKGROUND: In this study, we investigated the lethal potency, electrophoretic protein pattern and in vivo effects of Hottentotta saulcyi scorpion venom in mice. METHODS: Scorpions were collected at night, by using a UV lamp from Mardin Province, Turkey. Venom was obtained from mature H. saulcyi scorpions by electrical stimulation of the telson. The lethality of the venom was determined by i.v. injections using Swiss mice. In vivo effects of the venom were assessed by using the intraperitoneal route (ip) injections into mice (20±1g) and monitored for 24 h. The protein profiles of the scorpion

Transcriptome analysis of the venom gland of the scorpion Scorpiops jendeki: implication for the evolution of the scorpion venom arsenal.

BACKGROUND: The family Euscorpiidae, which covers Europe, Asia, Africa, and America, is one of the most widely distributed scorpion groups. However, no studies have been conducted on the venom of a Euscorpiidae species yet. In this work, we performed a transcriptomic approach for characterizing the venom components from a Euscorpiidae scorpion, Scorpiops jendeki. RESULTS: There are ten known types of venom peptides and proteins obtained from Scorpiops jendeki. Great diversity is observed in primary sequences of most highly expressed types. The most highly expressed types are cytolytic peptide

Immunoreactivity and pharmacokinetics of horse anti-scorpion venom F(ab')2-scorpion venom interactions.

The immunoreactivity and pharmacokinetics of a new horse F(ab')2 scorpion antivenom and its effect on Buthus occitanus mardochei venom plasma disposition in the rabbit were studied. The scorpion venom-specific F(ab')2 affinity constant determined by immunoradiometric assay was 1.6 +/- 0.6 10(8) M-1. One group received a F(ab')2 bolus dose of 9.57 mg.kg-1 i.v. bolus or i.m.. The plasma F(ab')2 concentration followed a biexponential decline after i.v. administration with distribution and elimination half-lives of 2.54 +/- 0.36 and 49.52 +/- 3.07 hr, respectively. The total volume of distribution

Pathophysiological Effects of the North Africa's Dangerous Scorpions and Antivenom Neutralization Efficacity: Unveiling the Spleen's Response.

The scorpion envenomations represent a serious public health issue, especially in North Africa. Their venom is known as a poison causing fatal complications. However, antivenom is the effective therapeutic approach available, showing a wide distribution in tissue compartments. Despite large-scale studies on the pathogenesis of scorpion envenomations, the spleen remains an organ not fully highlighted, even its major implication on the organism's immune response. In order to have a full view on this point, the focus will be directed for the first time towards the neutralization effects of a rabb

Envenomation by the scorpion (Centruroides limbatus) outside its natural range and recognition of medically important scorpions.

A 67-year-old woman presented to a community emergency department in Orange County, CA, after she was stung by a scorpion identified as Centruroides limbatus from Central America. She developed local pain and systemic symptoms, including parasthesias, flushing, hypertension, and wheezing. Envenomation by this genus of scorpion has not previously been reported in Orange County. Scorpions have been reported to be accidentally transported to areas where they are not indigenous, and patients may present anywhere with envenomation by dangerous scorpion species. Physicians should recognize general i

Toxic peptides and genes encoding toxin gamma of the Brazilian scorpions Tityus bahiensis and Tityus stigmurus.

Seven toxic peptides from the venom of Tityus bahiensis and Tityus stigmurus was isolated and sequenced, five of them to completion. The most abundant peptide from each of these two species of scorpion was 95% identical with that of toxin gamma from the venom of Tityus serrulatus. They were consequently named gamma-b and gamma-st respectively. The genes encoding these new gamma-like peptides were cloned and sequenced by utilizing oligonucleotides synthesized according to known cDNA sequences of toxin gamma, and amplified by PCR on templates of DNA purified from both T. bahiensis and T. stigmur

Purification and physiological characterization of neurotoxins from venoms of the scorpions centruroides sculpturatus and leiurus quinquestriatus.

Several different toxins having specific effects on the kinetics of sodium channels have been isolated from the venoms of two scorpions. A combination of two steps of ion-exchange chromatography has been used to purify these toxins, whose sizes and purities have been assayed by gel filtration, urea/sodium dodecyl sulfate/polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and isoelectric focusing. The actions of the toxins and their relative potencies have been determined by studying the modifications they produce in action potential shape, using the sucrose-gap method, and in ionic current kinetics, measured

Serum level of scorpion toxins, electrolytes and electrocardiogram alterations in Mexican children envenomed by scorpion sting.

The scorpion Centruroides limpidus limpidus (C.l.l.) is endemic in México, producing hundreds of accidents in humans; children being one of the most susceptible targets. Few studies reported that severe envenoming by scorpion venom induces cardiac damage and electrolytes abnormalities in children, but the relationship of envenoming severity and toxic blood levels is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship among clinical status of envenoming, serum electrolyte, electrocardiographic abnormalities, and serum toxin levels in 44 children stung by scorpion over a period of 6

Preparation of a potent anti-scorpion-venom-serum against the venom of red scorpion (Buthus tamalus).

A number of children and adults, especially pregnant women succumb to the sting by red Scorpion (Buthus tamalus) in Konkan region--particularly on the coastal line. No specific antiserum or any other antidote is available to treat a victim of scorpion bite and hence the need to prepare a potent antiserum. Red Scorpion (B. tamalus) venom is a mixture of a number of protein moieties and neurotoxins of low molecular weight. Therefore, the venom is poor in antigenic composition and it is difficult to get antibodies specific to neutralise lethal factor/factors. Using Bentonite as an adjuvant and ex

Clinical outcomes in a murine model after envenoming by the Amazonian scorpions Tityus strandi and Tityus dinizi.

The Brazilian Amazon is home to a rich fauna of scorpion species of medical importance, some of them still poorly characterized regarding their biological actions and range of clinical symptoms after envenoming. The Amazonian scorpion species Tityus strandi and Tityus dinizi constitute some of the scorpions in this group, with few studies in the literature regarding their systemic repercussions. In the present study, we characterized the clinical, inflammatory, and histopathological manifestations of T. strandi and T. dinizi envenoming in a murine model using Balb/c mice. The results show a ro

Processed Buthus martensii Karsch scorpions ameliorate diet-induced NASH in mice by attenuating Kv1.3-mediated macrophage activation.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Processed Buthus martensii Karsch (BmK) scorpion, also known as Quan-Xie, is a traditional Chinese medicine that is clinically used for the treatment of NAFLD due to its Tong-Luo-San-Jie effects. Our previous study showed that aqueous extract of processed BmK scorpion venom gland (pVg AE) inhibited macrophage inflammation by targeting Kv1.3 and identified the thermostable peptide BmKK2 as a potent Kv1.3 blocker. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study examined the therapeutic effects of processed BmK scorpions on NASH, specifically focusing on the involvement of their ant

Transcriptomic and proteomic analyses of venom glands from scorpions Liocheles australasiae, Mesobuthus martensii, and Scorpio maurus palmatus.

Scorpion venom contains a cocktail of differing peptides and proteins. Previous studies focused on the identification of species-specific components in scorpion venoms, and whether there could be peptides and/or proteins conserved in the venom gland of a scorpion ancestor has been rarely investigated. Here, using a combination of transcriptomic and proteomic approaches, putative conserved toxins from the venom glands of scorpions Liocheles australasiae, Mesobuthus martensii, and Scorpio maurus palmatus were identified and compared. Similar to other studies, more than half of the conserved toxi
