Screen time and manic symptoms in early adolescents: prospective findings from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine prospective associations between screen time and manic symptoms in early adolescents, and the extent to which problematic screen use (characterized by addiction, conflict, relapse, and withdrawal) mediates the association. METHODS: We analyzed prospective cohort data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (N = 9,243; ages 10-11 years in Year 1 in 2017-2019; 48.8% female; 44.0% racial/ethnic minority). Participants reported daily time spent on six different screen subtypes. Linear regression analyses were used to determine associations betwee

Association Between Eyelid Twitching and Digital Screen Time, Uncorrected Refractive Error, Intraocular Pressure, and Blood Electrolyte Imbalances.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have shown that isolated eyelid myokymia (EM) is usually caused by stress, fatigue, and caffeine consumption. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between EM and digital screen time, uncorrected refractive error, intraocular pressure (IOP), and blood electrolyte levels. METHODS: Between February 2023 and June 2024, 103 eyes of 103 patients who applied to the ophthalmology outpatient clinic with complaints of eyelid twitching lasting for more than two weeks and 103 eyes of 103 healthy individuals as a control group were included in the study.

Longitudinal associations of screen time, physical activity, and sleep duration with body mass index in U.S. youth.

BACKGROUND: Youth use different forms of screen time (e.g., streaming, gaming) that may be related to body mass index (BMI). Screen time is non-independent from other behaviors, including physical activity and sleep duration. Statistical approaches such as isotemporal substitution or compositional data analysis (CoDA) can model associations between these non-independent behaviors and health outcomes. Few studies have examined different types of screen time, physical activity, and sleep duration simultaneously in relation to BMI. METHODS: Data were baseline (2017-2018) and one-year follow-up (

Increased Screen Time as a Cause of Declining Physical, Psychological Health, and Sleep Patterns: A Literary Review.

Dependency on digital devices resulting in an ever-increasing daily screen time has subsequently also been the cause of several adverse effects on physical and mental or psychological health. Constant exposure to devices like smartphones, personal computers, and television can severely affect mental health- increase stress and anxiety, for example, and cause various sleep issues in both children as well as adults. Risk factors for obesity and cardiovascular disorders, including hypertension, poor regulation of stress, low HDL cholesterol, and insulin resistance are among the physical health re

Relationship between Physical Activity, Screen Time, and Sleep Quantity and Quality in US Adolescents Aged 16⁻19.

Despite the health benefits associated with physical activity (PA), screen time reduction, and sleep quantity and quality, the relationships between PA, screen time, and sleep quantity and quality remain unclear in adolescents. The present study is a cross-sectional analysis of data from adolescents aged 16-19 years who participated in the 2005-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (n = 542). Multivariable logistic regression models, adjusted for confounders, examined the relationship between objectively measured PA, self-reported screen time, and sleep quantity and quality. Re

Adverse physiological and psychological effects of screen time on children and adolescents: Literature review and case study.

UNLABELLED: A growing body of literature is associating excessive and addictive use of digital media with physical, psychological, social and neurological adverse consequences. Research is focusing more on mobile devices use, and studies suggest that duration, content, after-dark-use, media type and the number of devices are key components determining screen time effects. Physical health effects: excessive screen time is associated with poor sleep and risk factors for cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure, obesity, low HDL cholesterol, poor stress regulation (high sympathetic aro

Early Screen Time and Behavioral Symptom Trajectories in Children With Autism and ADHD: A Longitudinal Cohort Study.

PURPOSE: Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may be especially sensitive to early screen exposure due to sensory and emotional vulnerabilities. This study examined whether early screen time differentially affects behavioral trajectories in ASD, ADHD, and neurotypical children. METHODS: Using data from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children, linear mixed-effects models assessed outcomes. Screen time before age 2 was categorized as ≥ 14 vs. <14 h/week. Hyperactivity and emotional problems were measured at ages 4, 6, and 8, with

Not just time: Multidimensional patterns of screen use and adolescent well-being in nine countries and regions.

Although major scholars and policy institutions have long advocated limiting adolescents' screen time to reduce potential health risks, evidence remains insufficient regarding whether such restrictions may overlook the potential benefits of screen use. The present study aimed to comprehensively capture the associations between multiple features of screen engagement and diverse health indicators among adolescents using a large cross-nations dataset. Participants included 57,279 fifteen-year-old adolescents (50.6% female) from nine countries or regions. Regression analyses and latent profile ana

Screen time, sleep disturbances, and dental caries in adolescents and young children: an emerging public health concern.

Dental caries is one of the leading morbidities affecting adolescents globally, with a significant proportion of adolescents continuing to experience untreated decay, pain, and functional restrictions. Increased screen time has been associated with poor oral health outcomes in both adolescent and pediatric populations, although direct evidence in adolescents is limited. Current evidence suggests an association between sleep deprivation and dental caries, although the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. There is an urgent need to adopt a comprehensive set of interventions to m
