Mercury offloaded in Northern elephant seal hair affects coastal seawater surrounding rookery.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a potent neurotoxin that is biomagnified approximately 1-10 million-fold in aquatic carnivores such as the Northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris), whose excreta and molted pelage, in turn, constitute a source of environmental MeHg contamination at the base of marine food chains. The potential for this top-down contamination is greatest in coastal areas with productive marine ecosystems that provide ideal habitats for large marine mammal colonies that can number in the thousands. This recycling of MeHg was evidenced by comparing total mercury (HgT) and MeHg con

The effect of rehabilitation of northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) on antimicrobial resistance of commensal Escherichia coli.

The aim of this study was to determine if antimicrobial drug use increases resistance of commensal gastrointensinal Escherichia coli of wild northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) treated in rehabilitation, and, if so, identify the risk factors involved. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) levels of twelve antimicrobial drugs were determined for 289 E. coli isolates from 99 seals sampled at admission and 277 isolates obtained at release from rehabilitation using broth microdilution. Prevalence of E. coli antimicrobial resistance, MIC(50), MIC(90), and clustering of MIC values wer

Polioencephalomalacia in captive harbour seals (Phoca vitulina).

In a colony of 11 harbour seals (Phoca vitulina Linné 1758) two episodes of central nervous disorders occurred within 2 years causing fatalities in seven adult animals. Clinical signs comprised dyspnoea, anorexia, apathy, incoordination and lateral recumbency. Vitamin B complex therapy was successful once. Pathomorphological examination of seven carcasses revealed acute and subacute malacia of the cerebellar grey matter. Additional acute malacic lesions located in the cerebral cortices and basal ganglia were observed. Mesencephalic nuclei were less severely affected and displayed acute changes

Mercury species in the liver of ringed seals.

Four types of mercury species, namely, methylmercury, organic mercury other than methylmercury, inorganic mercury, and insoluble mercury, deemed to be mercuric selenide (HgSe), were found in the liver of 45 ringed seals from the Canadian Arctic. On average, methylmercury, at 2%, made up the smallest fraction of the total mercury in the liver of these animals. Of the total mercury concentration in seal liver, 53% was insoluble mercury, estimated to be largely mercuric selenide. Other workers have found this compound to be present in mammalian liver and identified it to be HgSe. Organic mercury

Establishment, cryopreservation, and growth of 11 cell lines prepared from a juvenile Hawaiian monk seal, Monachus schauinslandi.

Eleven cell lines were prepared from skin, snout, liver, kidney, lung, heart, brain, spleen, thyroid, urinary bladder, and periorbital soft tissue of a juvenile Hawaiian monk seal (Monachus schauinslandi). The cell grew at 37 degrees C in RPMI 1640 medium supplemented with 20% fetal bovine serum. These cell lines have been subcultured 11-27 times since their initiation in May 1997. Growth of the monk seal cells was serum-dependent and plating efficiencies ranged from 4-24%. These monk seal cells grew well in M199, L-15 and MEM commonly used for cultivation of animal and mammalian cells and ret

Micro-evolutionary implications of allozymic and morphometric variations in sealworms Pseudoterranova sp. (Ascaridoidea: Anisakidae) among sympatric hosts from the southeastern Pacific Ocean.

We found significant morphometric and electrophoretic differences between sealworm larvae collected from four sympatric fish host species off the central coast of Chile. The South American sea lion, Otaria byronia, is a suitable host and most likely the only definitive host species in the study area. Morphological patterns of caudal papillae in adult males collected from sea lions and electrophoretic evidence from larvae and adults substantiate our conclusion that they belong to just one, new species yet to be described. The genetic and morphometric differences found between sealworm larvae fr

A case of cleft palate in a Kuril seal (Phoca vitulina stejnegeri), from Hokkaido, Japan.

A male pup Kuril seal (Phoca vitulina stejnegeri) from Hokkaido, Japan, was observed with a unilateral and total cleft of the primary palate. Complications included a supernumerary tooth, hypoplasia and asymmetry of the face, and deformation of the eyeball and external auditory meatus. An accompanying pneumonia may have resulted from water flowing into the respiratory system due to imperfect closure of the nostril by the cleft. No other abnormalities were found.

Methylmercury poisoning in the harp seal (Pagophilus groenlandicus).

Hematological and blood chemistry values were examined in harp seals (Pagophilus groenlandicus) exposed to daily oral dosages of methylmercuric chloride (MMC). Two seals, exposed to 0.25 mg MMC/kg body weight/day for 60 and 90 days, respectively, did not show abnormal blood values. Two other seals exposed to 25.0 mg MMC/kg body weight/day died on day 20 and 26 of exposure. Blood parameters indicated toxic hepatitis, uremia and renal failure. Total mercury and methylmercury values in the tissues of the experimental animals indicated that harp seals can tolerate high levels of mercury in the bra

Microplastics found in Weddell seal placenta in Antarctica, potential threatening marine ecosystem health.

Microplastics (MPs) have become emerging contaminants of global concern, yet their presence in the reproductive tissues of Antarctic marine mammals remains poorly understood. In this study, COI gene sequencing confirmed that 59 naturally expelled placentas, collected accidentally from Prydz Bay, East Antarctica, originated from the Weddell seal Leptonychotes weddellii. MPs were isolated from placental tissues and characterized. A total of 30 MP items were detected, with an average abundance of 0.024 ± 0.029 items/g (wet weight). Fibers dominated (73.33 %), followed by films (16.67 %) and fragm

Selected and shared hematological responses to apnea in elite human free divers and northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris).

Despite elite human free divers achieving incredible feats in competitive free diving, there has yet to be a study that compares consummate divers, (i.e. northern elephant seals) to highly conditioned free divers (i.e., elite competitive free-diving humans). Herein, we compare these two diving models and suggest that hematological traits detected in seals reflect species-specific specializations, while hematological traits shared between the two species are fundamental mammalian characteristics. Arterial blood samples were analyzed in elite human free divers (n = 14) during a single, maximal v

Characterisation of North American Brucella isolates from marine mammals.

Extension of known ecological niches of Brucella has included the description of two novel species from marine mammals. Brucella pinnipedialis is associated predominantly with seals, while two major Brucella ceti clades, most commonly associated with porpoises or dolphins respectively, have been identified. To date there has been limited characterisation of Brucella isolates obtained from marine mammals outside Northern European waters, including North American waters. To address this gap, and extend knowledge of the global population structure and host associations of these Brucella species,

Blood levels of polychlorinated biphenyls and their hydroxylated metabolites in Baikal seals (Pusa sibirica): emphasis on interspecies comparison, gender difference and association with blood thyroid hormone levels.

We have previously demonstrated that Baikal seals (Pusa sibirica) are still being exposed to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and the population is at risk. In the present study, we measured the residue levels of PCBs and their hydroxylated metabolites (OH-PCBs) in the blood of Baikal seals and assessed the impact of OH-PCBs on the thyroid function. Blood concentrations of PCBs and OH-PCBs were in the range of 2.8-130 ng g(-1)wet wt. and 0.71-4.6 ng g(-1)wetwt., respectively. Concentrations of higher-chlorinated OH-PCBs (hexa- to octa-PCBs) were more than 70% to total OH-PCB concentrations, i

Patterns of stranding and mortality in common seals (Phoca vitulina) and grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) in The Netherlands between 1979 and 2008.

Pathological examination of stranded marine mammals provides information on the causes of mortality in their populations. Patterns of stranding and causes of death of dead-stranded seals on the Dutch coast were analyzed over a 30-year period (1979-2008). Stranding data (n=1,286) and post-mortem data (n=379) from common seals (Phoca vitulina) and grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) found dead, or that died before admission to rehabilitation, were obtained from the Seal Rehabilitation and Research Centre database. Accumulation of vitamin A in the hepatic stellate cell of arctic top predators.

We performed a systematic characterization of the hepatic vitamin A storage in mammals and birds of the Svalbard Archipelago and Greenland. The liver of top predators, including polar bear, Arctic fox, bearded seal, and glaucous gull, contained about 10-20 times more vitamin A than the liver of all other arctic animals studied, as well as their genetically related continental top predators. The values are also high compared to normal human and experimental animals like mouse and rat. This massive amount of hepatic vitamin A was located in large autofluorescent lipid droplets in hepatic stellat

Thyroid function testing in elephant seals in health and disease.

Northern Elephant Seal Skin Disease (NESSD) is a severe, ulcerative, skin condition of unknown cause affecting primarily yearling northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris); it has been associated with decreased levels of circulating thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Abnormalities of the thyroid gland that result in decreased hormone levels (hypothyroidism) can result in hair loss, scaling and secondary skin infections. However, concurrent illness (including skin ailments) can suppress basal levels of thyroid hormones and mimic hypothyroidism; when this occurs in animals with no

Detoxification mechanism of heavy metals in marine mammals and seabirds: interaction of selenium with mercury, silver, copper, zinc, and cadmium in liver.

Subcellular distribution of mercury, selenium, silver, copper, zinc, and cadmium was determined in the liver of northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus), black-footed albatrosses (Diomedea nigripes), and Dall's porpoises (Phocoenoides dalli). Mercury, selenium, and silver were preferentially accumulated in nuclear, lysosomal, and mitochondrial fraction with an increase in their hepatic concentrations, whereas copper, zinc, and cadmium were accumulated mainly in cytosol with an increase in the hepatic concentrations for all three species.
