Replacing sedentary behavior with physical activity reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression: a study with young adults.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior (SB) are movement behaviors that have been associated with mental health. Evidence suggests that replacing SB with PA may influence mental disorders. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of replacing time spent in SB with moderate-intensity PA (MPA) and vigorous-intensity (VPA) on the symptoms of anxiety and depression among college students. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from a multicenter survey conducted among undergraduate students from eight public universities in Brazil. Data were collected between October 202

Physical activity, sedentary behavior, and metabolic syndrome in adults with arthritis: cross-sectional and Mendelian randomization analysis.

This study examined the relationship between moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), sedentary behavior (SB), and metabolic syndrome, employing both cross-sectional and Mendelian randomization methods to enhance causal inference. The cross-sectional analysis included adults aged 20 years and older with arthritis (n=4,227) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and assessed the associations between MVPA, SB, and metabolic syndrome. Mendelian randomization analysis used genome-wide association studies to validate causal relationships, employing instrumental variables se

Physical activity and sedentary behavior profiles among prisoners in an open prison: differences in psychological well-being?

BACKGROUND: Incarcerated individuals face elevated risks for both physical and mental health issues. While structured physical activity programs have shown health benefits, little is known about how general patterns of physical activity and sedentary behavior, including screen-based media use, unfold in everyday prison life. This study aimed to identify distinct behavioral profiles among prisoners and explore whether these groups differ in psychological well-being indicators. METHODS: A paper-pencil survey was conducted in a German open prison for young male offenders. Self-reported data were

Dietary intake of live microbes mitigates the mortality risk associated with sedentary behavior in US hypertensive individuals.

To investigate the association between dietary microbes intake and sedentary behavior with mortality risk in hypertensive adults in the United States. This study uses data from hypertensive individuals included in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999 to 2018. The relationship between live-microbe intake, sedentary time, and mortality risk among hypertensive individuals is preliminarily explored using Kaplan-Meier curves. Cox proportional hazards models are employed to analyze the associations separately and jointly, followed by subgroup analyses and sensitivi

Unhealthy behaviors associated with mental health disorders: a systematic comparative review of diet quality, sedentary behavior, and cannabis and tobacco use.

BACKGROUND: There are well-established literatures documenting the associations between mental disorders and unhealthy behaviors such as poor diet quality, sedentary behavior, and cannabis and tobacco use. Few studies have attempted to understand the respective findings in light of each other, however. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this review was to assemble comparable data for each behavior-disorder association and assess the associations in terms of their overall strength. The review aimed to include a representative, but not exhaustive, range of studies that would allow for explorative compar

Associations of emotional/behavioral problems with accelerometer-measured sedentary behavior, physical activity and step counts in children with autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: The evidence for associations of emotional/behavioral status with sedentary behavior (SB), physical activity (PA) and step counts is scarce in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Also, ASD-related deficiencies may affect actual levels of PA. We aimed to describe accelerometer-measured SB, PA and step counts in children with ASD, and to examine the associations of emotional/behavioral problems with SB, PA and step counts after assessing associations between accelerometer-measured SB, PA and step counts and ASD-related deficiencies. METHODS: A total of 93 ASD children, age

Associations of Sedentary Behavior With Total and Central Adiposity and Health-Related Quality of Life in Older Adults.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Sedentary behavior (SB) is associated with total adiposity, a key cardiometabolic risk factor; however, evidence using indices reflecting body fat distribution remains limited in older adults. Additionally, associations between SB and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) are also inconsistent. This study evaluated associations of objectively measured SB with total and central adiposity, and context-specific SB with HRQOL in older adults. METHODS: SB and physical activity were measured via accelerometry and survey from 40 adults ≥60 years old. Adiposity was assessed usi
