Positive effects of selenium supplementation in women with newly diagnosed Hashimoto's thyroiditis in an area with low selenium status.

OBJECTIVE: Autoimmune thyroid diseases, including Hashimoto's thyroiditis, are the most common ones among autoimmune diseases. The reported effects of selenium supplementation on the course of Hashimoto's thyroiditis are not consistent. It is therefore important to continue this line of research. DESIGN: The participants received selenium in the form of sodium selenite(IV) at a dose of 100 µg/day for 6 months. PATIENTS: Newly diagnosed and previously untreated Hashimoto's thyroiditis with euthyroidism or subclinical hypothyroidism. A total of 36 patients (aged 20 to 52 years) qualified for t

Effects of vitamin E, inorganic selenium, bacterial organic selenium, and their combinations on immunity response in broiler chickens.

BACKGROUND: Selenium (Se) and vitamin E (Vit E) can act synergistically and affect biological processes, mainly antioxidant and immunity. The use of excess dietary Vit E and Se in animals' feed could enhance immune response and induce disease resistance. Moreover, different Se sources may provide different alterations in the immune system. Accordingly, the aim of the current study was to assess the impact of dietary supplementation of Vit E, inorganic Se (sodium selenite, SS), bacterial organic Se of ADS18, and their different combinations on the plasma immunoglobulins, ceacum microbial popula

Mercury and selenium in the muscle of piscivorous common mergansers (Mergus merganser) from a selenium-deficient European country.

Although the relationship between mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se) has been studied in wild birds in areas with sufficient or excessive Se levels, little is known about this relationship in areas where the supply of Se is limited. As Hg detoxification is based on the production of biologically inactive Hg-Se complexes, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between the concentrations of total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg), inorganic mercury (InHg=THg-MeHg), percent MeHg of THg, Se and molar ratios (THg:Se, MeHg:Se, InHg:Se) in the breast muscle (n=16) of the piscivorous

Effect of selenium supplementation on the distribution of selenium among plasma proteins of a patient with maple syrup urine disease.

Selenium (Se) status was studied in a patient with classical maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) receiving Se supplement. The basal plasma Se concentration was 0.06 mumol/l increasing to 2.1 mumol/l after 40 days of supplementation. When the plasma Se distribution was analysed by gel filtration, a major peak was seen close to the high molecular weight proteins with a second peak in the albumin region. When the Se dose was decreased in a stepwise manner from 50 micrograms/day to 25 micrograms/day and then to 17 micrograms/day plasma Se decreased, but the proportion of plasma Se in the two protein

Wound Healing Potential of Selenium and Nanoselenium.

Wound healing is a dynamic process that begins immediately after tissue damage and is divided into four main stages: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. Increased intake of the trace element selenium is critical for tissue repair. Selenium plays a key role in wound healing by regulating antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial status. The purpose of this review is to highlight the role of the essential trace element selenium, both in its pure form and as part of nanocomposites and selenoproteins, in regulating wound healing by analyzing and summarizing a large bod

Cardiopulmonary injury in hypoxia and selenium: A review.

Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element required by the human body, existing in selenium proteins as selenocysteine (Sec) and selenomethionine (SeMet). Through these proteins, Se exerts its biological effects such as free radical metabolism, antioxidant functions, immune response, reproductive functions, apoptosis, and endocrine hormone regulation. Both selenium deficiency and excess are can cause adverse effects on human health. A growing number of evidence highlights the involvement of selenium and its proteins in the development and progression of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). During h

The Impact of Selenium Deficiency on Cardiovascular Function.

Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element that is necessary for various metabolic processes, including protection against oxidative stress, and proper cardiovascular function. The role of Se in cardiovascular health is generally agreed upon to be essential yet not much has been defined in terms of specific functions. Se deficiency was first associated with Keshan's Disease, an endemic disease characterized by cardiomyopathy and heart failure. Since then, Se deficiency has been associated with multiple cardiovascular diseases, including myocardial infarction, heart failure, coronary heart dis

[Selenium and zinc: "antioxidants" for healthy aging?].

Selenium and zinc are essential trace elements and an inadequate dietary intake has been implicated in the decline of immune and cognitive functions in aged persons and in the pathogenesis of age-related disorders. Both micronutrients are often marketed as "antioxidants" in mineral supplements; however, neither selenium nor zinc are antioxidants per se but they may exert beneficial effects as components of enzymes and other proteins that catalyze redox reactions and/or are involved in the maintenance of redox homeostasis. According to epidemiological data older individuals have an increased ri

50 years of the ETA: "the selenium connection".

The recent celebration of the 50 years of the ETA closely coincided with that of the 200 years since the discovery and description of selenium, an essential trace element for normal thyroid gland function and thus an adjuvant in the treatment of thyroid diseases. The aim of this commentary is to briefly outline the half centennial of the ETA while also signaling important moments in the history of selenium, developments in its availability round the world, details of its connection with thyroid function and, finally, its current and projected modes of application.

Pregnancy, thyroid, and the potential use of selenium.

The management of pregnant women is a major concern of health care around the world. There is growing evidence regarding the influence of selenium (Se) on pregnancy and fetus outcomes. However, due to as yet insufficient evidence, lack of measurable markers to assess the effect of Se supplementation on the human metabolism, and Se's narrow therapeutic index, the majority of experts and the current guidelines published by several scientific societies do not recommend the use of Se in pregnancy and in women of childbearing age. Further research based on well-designed studies, including assessmen

Selenium and Autoimmune Diseases: A Review Article.

BACKGROUND: Selenium is an essential trace element with fundamental effects on human biology. Trace elements deficiency is not an uncommon finding in autoimmune diseases. This deficiency may be a consequence of autoimmune diseases or may contribute to their etiology. With regard to evidence showing the association between selenium deficiency and generation of reactive oxygen species and subsequent inflammation, reviewing the role of selenium in collagen vascular diseases could help researchers to devise strategies for managing these diseases. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to evaluate the

Revision of reciprocal action of mercury and selenium.

Diverse forms of mercury (Hg) have various effects on animals and humans because of a variety of routes of administration. Inorganic mercury (iHg) binds to thiol groups of proteins and enzymes in one's body or is methylated by microorganisms. Organic form of Hg, contrary to the iHg, is more stable but may be demethylated to Hg2+ in the tissue of intestinal flora. Selenium (Se) also occurs in a variety of chemical forms in one's body but both of these elements behave very differently from one another. Mercury binding to selenide or Se-containing ligands is a primary molecular mechanism that red

Characterization of Selenium Species in the Shijimi Clam.

Selenium is an essential trace element for humans and animals. Fish and shellfish are known to be rich in selenium and suppose to be an effective selenium source. In this study, we characterized the selenium species in the Shijimi clam (Corbicula japonica), which is a typical clam eaten in Japan. The Shijimi clam contains a relatively high concentration of selenium (3.5 µg-selenium/g-dry Shijimi). Approximately 30% of the total selenium in the Shijimi clam meat was extractable with water, while selenium in the Shijimi clam was hardly extracted with ethanol, chloroform and hexane. The role of selenium in thyroid gland pathophysiology.

It is now assumed that proper functioning of the thyroid gland (TG), beside iodine, requires also a number of elements, including selenium, iron, zinc, copper, and calcium. In many cases, only an adequate supply of one of these microelements (e.g. iodine) may reveal symptoms resulting from deficits of other microelements (e.g. iron or selenium). Selenium is accounted to the trace elements of key importance for homeostasis of the human system, in particular, for the proper functioning of the immune system and the TG. Results of epidemiological studies have demonstrated that selenium deficit may

Significance of selenium in thyroid physiology and pathology.

Selenium is pivotal element in maintaining homeostasis of human body. It is capable of exerting an influence on immunological responses, cell growth and viral defence. Nevertheless, it is mostly required for the proper thyroid function. There were described 25 selenoproteins, which play various roles in human body. Selenium is an essential particle in the active site of enzymes such as GPXs (glutathione peroxidases), Ds (deiodinases) and TRs (thioredoxin reductases). Owing to this, it has a fundamental importance in the synthesis and function of thyroid hormones, and protects cells against fre

The Role of Iodine and Selenium in Autoimmune Thyroiditis.

Iodine and selenium (Se) are both essential elements to thyroid hormone economy, while they represent key players in the development of autoimmune thyroiditis.Chronic high iodine intake has been associated in various studies with increased frequency of autoimmune thyroiditis. In susceptible individuals, iodine excess increases intra-thyroid infiltrating Th17 cells and inhibits T regulatory (TREG) cells development, while it triggers an abnormal expression of tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) in thyrocytes, thus inducing apoptosis and parenchymal destruction. As wa

Selenium as an antidote in the treatment of mercury intoxication.

Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for humans. It is found in the enzyme glutathione peroxidase. This enzyme protects the organism against certain types of damage. Some data suggest that Se plays a role in the body's metabolism of mercury (Hg). Selenium has in some studies been found to reduce the toxicity of Hg salts. Selenium and Hg bind in the body to each other. It is not totally clear what impact the amount of Se has in the human body on the metabolism and toxicity of prolonged Hg exposure.

Fate of selenium in a small urban watershed.

A field study was conducted on a small urban watershed (residential and golf course dominated) in southern Nevada to assess the concentration and speciation of selenium (Se) in a series of drain lines and monitoring wells and to quantify the mass discharge of Se from the drain system. Water samples were collected on a monthly basis and analyzed for total Se, selenate (SeO4 (=)) and selenite (SeO3 (=)). In addition, where possible, flow was assessed as was, temperature, redox potential, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO) along with all major cations and anions. The data were then modeled with PhreeqC to

[The role of selenium in endocrine system diseases].

Oxygen derived free radicals, generated by a number of cellular reactions, include superoxide anion, hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radicals. They exert their cytotoxic effects mainly via peroxidation of the cell membrane resulting in the loss of membrane integrity. The essential trace element, selenium exerts complex effects on the endocrine systems, partly due to its antioxidant capacity. Well-characterized selenoproteins include iodothyronine deiodinases, glutathione peroxidases and thioredoxin reductases involved in thyroid hormone metabolism and protection from oxidative damage.
