Episodic and semantic memory contributions to imagination and creativity.

The ability to generate novel creative ideas (divergent thinking) is closely linked with our ability to imagine novel future events (episodic simulation). Here, we employed an individual differences approach to examine whether divergent thinking and episodic simulation are differentially associated with episodic and semantic retrieval ability. In response to object word cues, participants generated meanings and definitions (semantic memory), remembered a past event (episodic memory), imagined a novel future event (episodic simulation), or generated novel uses (divergent thinking). Replicating

Semantic Retrieval of Projects Funded by the Innovation Committee.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence-based development of healthcare innovations requires efficient access to existing knowledge. The Innovation Committee of the Federal Joint Committee (Gemeinsamer Bundesausschuss, G-BA) has funded more than 800 projects since 2016, yet the heterogeneity of topics and terminology limits the effectiveness of the current keyword-based search interface. METHODS: To address vocabulary-mismatch problems and support more nuanced information needs, we developed and evaluated a semantic search tool using vector-based natural-language retrieval. The application embeds project desc

Prefrontal and Cerebellar Contributions to Semantic Memory Retrieval.

Semantic memory retrieval is essential for language, thought, and adaptive behavior. Although both the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and the cerebellum have been implicated in this function, the role of the PFC remains poorly understood and the contribution of the cerebellum largely overlooked in current neurocognitive models. To address these gaps, we conducted a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled experiment in which healthy adults received anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) targeting the left lateral PFC, the right posterior cerebellum, or sham stimulation. Participant

Semantic classification of Indonesian consumer health questions.

PURPOSE: Online consumer health forums serve as a way for the public to connect with medical professionals. While these medical forums offer a valuable service, online Question Answering (QA) forums can struggle to deliver timely answers due to the limited number of available healthcare professionals. One way to solve this problem is by developing an automatic QA system that can provide patients with quicker answers. One key component of such a system could be a module for classifying the semantic type of a question. This would allow the system to understand the patient's intent and route them

The role of GABA in semantic memory and its neuroplasticity.

A fundamental challenge in neuroscience is understanding neural functioning and plasticity of the brain. The anterior temporal lobe (ATL) is a hub for semantic memory, which generates coherent conceptual representations. GABAergic inhibition plays a crucial role in shaping human cognition and plasticity, but it is unclear how this inhibition relates to human semantic memory and its plasticity. Here, we employed a combination of continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS), MR spectroscopy and fMRI to investigate the role of GABA in semantic memory and its neuroplasticity. We found that inhibitory

Exploring semantic grounding in the posterior parietal cortex.

This study examines the evolving perspective on semantic processing, which has shifted from the traditional view of an isolated semantic memory system to one that recognizes the involvement of dynamic, distributed neural networks. Recent evidence supports the hypothesis that semantic processing engages both modality-specific and multimodal regions, with the latter serving as integrative "semantic hubs." In this context, our research focuses on the posterior parietal cortices (PPC) and their role in processing space-related semantics. We utilized a low-frequency repetitive Transcranial Magnetic

The neural basis of naturalistic semantic and social cognition.

Decoding social environments and engaging meaningfully with other people are critical aspects of human cognition. Multiple cognitive systems, including social and semantic cognition, work alongside each other to support these processes. This study investigated shared processing between social and semantic systems using neuroimaging data collected during movie-viewing, which captures the multimodal environment in which social knowledge is exchanged. Semantic and social content from movie events (event-level) and movie transcripts (word-level) were used in parametric modulation analyses to test

Advances in semantic dementia: Neuropsychology, pathology & neuroimaging.

Semantic dementia is a kind of neurodegenerative disorder, characterized by prominent semantic impairments and anterior temporal lobe atrophy. Since 2010, more studies have devoted to this rare disorder, revealing that it is more complex than we think. Clinical advances include more specific findings of semantic impairments and other higher order cognitive deficits. Neuroimaging techniques can help revealing the different brain networks affected (both structurally and functionally) in this condition. Pathological and genetic studies have also found more complex situations of semantic dementia,

Spatiotemporal dynamics of abstract and concrete semantic representations.

Dual Coding Theories (DCT) suggest that meaning is represented in the brain by a double code: a language-derived code in the Anterior Temporal Lobe (ATL) and a sensory-derived code in perceptual and motor regions. Concrete concepts should activate both codes, while abstract ones rely solely on the linguistic code. To test these hypotheses, the present magnetoencephalography (MEG) experiment had participants judge whether visually presented words relate to the senses while we recorded brain responses to abstract and concrete semantic components obtained from 65 independently rated semantic feat

The spatiotemporal dynamics of semantic integration in the human brain.

Language depends critically on the integration of lexical information across multiple words to derive semantic concepts. Limitations of spatiotemporal resolution have previously rendered it difficult to isolate processes involved in semantic integration. We utilized intracranial recordings in epilepsy patients (n = 58) who read written word definitions. Descriptions were either referential or non-referential to a common object. Semantically referential sentences enabled high frequency broadband gamma activation (70-150 Hz) of the inferior frontal sulcus (IFS), medial parietal cortex, orbitofro

Semantic coherence markers: The contribution of perplexity metrics.

Devising automatic tools to assist specialists in the early detection of mental disturbances and psychotic disorders is to date a challenging scientific problem and a practically relevant activity. In this work we explore how language models (that are probability distributions over text sequences) can be employed to analyze language and discriminate between mentally impaired and healthy subjects. We have preliminarily explored whether perplexity can be considered a reliable metrics to characterize an individual's language. Perplexity was originally conceived as an information-theoretic measure

Semantic Fluency Predicts Gait Velocity in PSP.

CONTEXT: Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a large-scale network disease resulting in variable signs and symptoms including gait impairment and higher order cognitive dysfunction. Despite few studies showing the association of falls and cognitive dysfunction, the existing literature is yet to establish the exact relationship of discrete characteristics of gait with cognitive function in PSP. AIMS: In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to characterize and explore the relationship of these two apparently distinct physiological phenomena in patients with PSP and across its different vari

Clinical Features of Late-onset Semantic Dementia.

BACKGROUND: Semantic dementia (SD) is characterized by progressive semantic anomia extending to a multimodal loss of semantic knowledge. Although often considered an early-onset dementia, SD also occurs in later life, when it may be misdiagnosed as Alzheimer disease (AD). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate late-onset SD in comparison to early-onset SD and to AD. METHODS: We identified 74 individuals with SD and then compared those with late-onset SD (≥65 years of age) to those with early-onset SD (<65) on demographic and clinical features. We also compared a subgroup of 23 of the late-onset SD individua

Distinctive semantic features in the healthy adult brain.

The role of semantic features, which are distinctive (e.g., a zebra's stripes) or shared (e.g. has four legs) for accessing a concept, has been studied in detail in early neurodegenerative disease such as semantic dementia (SD). However, potential neural underpinnings of such processing have not been studied in healthy adults. The current study examines neural activation patterns using fMRI while participants completed a feature verification task, in which they identified shared or distinctive semantic features for a set of natural kinds and man-made artifacts. The results showed that the ante

Extending XNAT Platform with an Incremental Semantic Framework.

Informatics increases the yield from neuroscience due to improved data. Data sharing and accessibility enable joint efforts between different research groups, as well as replication studies, pivotal for progress in the field. Research data archiving solutions are evolving rapidly to address these necessities, however, distributed data integration is still difficult because of the need of explicit agreements for disparate data models. To address these problems, ontologies are widely used in biomedical research to obtain common vocabularies and logical descriptions, but its application may suffe

Abnormal semantic knowledge in a case of developmental amnesia.

An important theory holds that semantic knowledge can develop independently of episodic memory. One strong source of evidence supporting this independence comes from the observation that individuals with early hippocampal damage leading to developmental amnesia generally perform normally on standard tests of semantic memory, despite their profound impairment in episodic memory. However, one aspect of semantic memory that has not been explored is conceptual structure. We built on the theoretically important distinction between intrinsic features of object concepts (e.g., shape, colour, parts) a

Two cases of food aversion with semantic dementia.

Accounts of altered eating behavior in semantic dementia generally emphasize gluttony and abnormal food preferences. Here we describe two female patients with no past history of eating disorders who developed early prominent aversion to food in the context of an otherwise typical semantic dementia syndrome. One patient (aged 57) presented features in line with anorexia nervosa while the second patient (aged 58) presented with a syndrome more suggestive of bulimia nervosa. These cases add to the growing spectrum of apparently dichotomous behavior patterns in the frontotemporal dementias and ill

Oxytocin Modulates Semantic Integration in Speech Comprehension.

Listeners interpret utterances by integrating information from multiple sources including word level semantics and world knowledge. When the semantics of an expression is inconsistent with their knowledge about the world, the listener may have to search through the conceptual space for alternative possible world scenarios that can make the expression more acceptable. Such cognitive exploration requires considerable computational resources and might depend on motivational factors. This study explores whether and how oxytocin, a neuropeptide known to influence social motivation by reducing socia

Structural neuroanatomy of tinnitus and hyperacusis in semantic dementia.

INTRODUCTION: Tinnitus and hyperacusis are common symptoms of excessive auditory perception in the general population; however, their anatomical substrates and disease associations continue to be defined. PATIENTS: with semantic dementia (SemD) frequently report tinnitus and hyperacusis but the significance and basis for these symptoms have not been elucidated. METHODS: 43 patients with a diagnosis of SemD attending a specialist cognitive disorders clinic were retrospectively studied. 14 patients (32% of the cohort) reported at least moderately severe chronic auditory symptoms: seven had tin

Semantic dementia combined with motor neuron disease.

Up to 20% of patients with behavioural variants of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) also have motor neuron disease (MND); conversely, this comorbidity is rare in patients with language variants of FTD. A few patients have been reported with semantic dementia (SD) combined with MND. However, these patients demonstrated the clinical features of MND in the advanced stage. We report a patient with SD who also demonstrated MND symptoms in an earlier stage of the disease. A 61-year-old man visited our memory disorder clinic as a result of language disturbance and dysarthria of 8 months duration and fac
