Our experience with 102 patients having superior semicircular canal dehiscence confirm that the clinical manifestations of the disease are very diverse; we also identified 3 patients who showed Meniere-like symptoms. Clinical examination during an acute vertigo attack of a patient with Meniere disease for several years and whom we subsequently diagnosed as having large superior semicircular canal dehiscence on the affected side allowed us to hypothesize that a natural plugging of the superior semicircular canal by the overhanging dura mater could be responsible for the recurrence of symptoms.

Otogenic brain abscesses account for 31.4% of all cerebral abscesses: bone erosion due to coalescent otomastoiditis or cholesteatomas, osteothrombophlebitis, and hematogenous spreading are the most frequent pathways of infection. We briefly reported and discussed the first case of otogenic brain abscess due to infectious labyrinthitis that (likely) spread intracranially through a dehiscence of the superior semicircular canal.

CONCLUSION: Semicircular canal occlusion after completely removing cholesteatoma matrix is a safe and effective approach for treatment of labyrinthine fistula.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the safety and efficacy of semicircular canal occlusion for surgical treatment of labyrinthine fistula caused by cholesteatoma.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-two patients with labyrinthine fistula who were treated surgically were enrolled in the study. All patients were treated by completely removing the cholesteatoma matrix followed by semicircular canal occlusion.
RESULTS: With a follow-up of at least 6 mon

CONCLUSIONS: Results of audiometry, caloric testing and vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) testing were hardly influenced by plugging surgery.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of surgical plugging of the posterior semicircular canal on inner ear function in patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV).
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The subjects were five consecutive patients with intractable BPPV who underwent plugging surgery. The following functions of the inner ear were examined before and 6 months after surgery. Cochlea function was evaluated by the average hearing leve

HYPOTHESIS: Inner-ear malformations are frequently found in patients with sensorineural hearing loss. However, isolated anomalies of the vestibular part of the inner ear are seldom described, and for this reason their impact on balance is poorly understood. CARE REPORT: We present the case of a 38-year-old Caucasian man with recurrent vestibular complaints, with a sensation of linear tilting, but no hearing impairment. Clinical and neuro-otological examinations showed peripheral involvement of the vestibular system, while audiological investigation was within normal limits. High-resolution mag

OBJECTIVE: To examine the threshold of virtual endoscopy in the confirmation of superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD).
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series.
SUBJECTS: Three definite SSCD subjects, two possible SSCD subjects, and five control subjects.
METHODS: High-resolution temporal bone computed tomography and virtual endoscopy were performed in all subjects. Main outcome measures were to evaluate both intrajudge and interjudge reliability and to compare the closed threshold of diseased side with the contralateral side, both ears of patients with those of the control group.

In recent years, superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) has been recognized as a structural cause of a number of auditory and vestibular symptoms, such as vertigo and conductive hearing loss. Prior clinical studies on SSCD have commonly described this entity in adults, but rarely in the pediatric population. We present a pediatric patient with right-sided SSCD which was initially diagnosed radiographically at age seven. This rare and unique case demonstrated SSCD can be found in young children, although the majority of patients with SSCD are adults. It also provides strong evidence that

In 2003, it was reported that superior semicircular canal dehiscence can mimic otosclerosis because of low-frequency bone conduction hearing gain and dissipation of air-conducted acoustic energy through the dehiscence. We report the case of a 17-year-old girl with left-sided combined hearing loss thought to be due to otosclerosis. Bone conduction thresholds were -10 dB at 250 and 500 Hz and she had a 40 dB air-bone gap at 250 Hz. When a tuning fork was placed at her ankle she heard it in her left ear. Acoustic reflexes and vestibular evoked myogenic potentials could be elicited bilaterally. Im

Histological observation of endolymphatic hydrops in subjects suffering from Meniere's disease/syndrome and the presence of vestibular symptoms in experimentally induced endolymphatic hydrops have led to considerable debate regarding the potential role of inner-ear pressure. Could a condition influencing endolymphatic volume regulation lead to transient changes in translabyrinthine pressure sufficiently large to alter primary afferent discharge rates? To investigate this question we built a highly sensitive laser-based pressure sensor and recorded endolymphatic pressure modulations within the

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate cochleovestibular outcomes following trans-mastoid superior semicircular canal (SSC) occlusion in patients with symptomatic superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) and third-window syndrome (TWS), and to characterize objective pre-and postoperative functional changes in a tertiary-center cohort.
METHODS: Medical records of patients undergoing trans-mastoid SSC occlusion for SSCD with TWS were retrospectively reviewed. Diagnosis was based on characteristic cochleovestibular symptoms, physical examination, and imaging findings. Standardized pre- and postoperative as

Background/Objectives: Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) and the video head impulse test (vHIT) enable receptor-specific assessment of otolithic organs and semicircular canals. Their increasing use has revealed selective or apparently isolated vestibular abnormalities, although the clinical significance of these findings remains uncertain. This mini-review examines selective otolithic and semicircular canal dysfunction, with emphasis on diagnostic interpretation, methodological limitations, and future research needs. Methods: A structured narrative review of PubMed/MEDLINE and Scop

Semicircular canal dehiscence (SCCD) is a rare inner ear disease caused by an anatomical defect in the bony covering of the semicircular canal (SCC). This condition most commonly affects the superior semicircular canal, and less frequently involves multiple canals in one or both ears. Although the clinical and physiological features of a single SCCD are well known, there are only a few reported cases of multiple semicircular canal dehiscences. Thus, their clinical and physiological characteristics require further investigation. We present the case of a 59-year-old male patient of Moroccan ethn

PURPOSE: Determine whether adult cochlear implant users with radiographic superior semicircular canal dehiscence experience clinically significant differences in audiological outcomes when compared to cochlear implant users with normal temporal bone anatomy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective, single institution review. Adult, post-lingual deaf patients implanted between 2010 and 2020. Inclusion criteria included age 18 years or older, available preoperative computed tomography imaging, and preoperative and postoperative AzBio audiological data for at least 6 months of cochlear implant use.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the clinical significance of the Bow and Lean Test (BLT) for the diagnosis of different variants of vertical canal Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). BLT is commonly used for diagnoses of lateral semicircular canal (LSC) BPPV. However, vertical nystagmus in the BLT may indicate the presence of other variants such as PSC-BPPV.
METHODS: 567 patients with vertical canal BPPV were recruited. Patients with anterior semicircular canal (ASC) or PSC-BPPV were weekly examined until the negativization of BPPV. Nystagmus characteristics duri
