Bandgap widening through doping for improving the photocatalytic oxidation ability of narrow-bandgap semiconductors.

The trade-off relationship between narrowing the bandgap and achieving sufficient redox potentials accounts for the hindrance to the development of an efficient photocatalyst. Most of the previous researchers attempt to narrow the bandgap of semiconductors by impurity doping to achieve visible-light sensitivity, but this approach causes the losses of their oxidation and/or reduction ability. Conversely, this study presents a bandgap widening strategy by doping to improve the redox potential of photogenerated carriers. Employing first-principles simulations, we propose the lanthanum-doped bismu

De Novo Calculation of the Charge Carrier Mobility in Amorphous Small Molecule Organic Semiconductors.

Organic semiconductors (OSC) are key components in applications such as organic photovoltaics, organic sensors, transistors and organic light emitting diodes (OLED). OSC devices, especially OLEDs, often consist of multiple layers comprising one or more species of organic molecules. The unique properties of each molecular species and their interaction determine charge transport in OSCs-a key factor for device performance. The small charge carrier mobility of OSCs compared to inorganic semiconductors remains a major limitation of OSC device performance. Virtual design can support experimental R&

Dry lithography of large-area, thin-film organic semiconductors using frozen CO(2) resists.

To address the incompatibility of organic semiconductors with traditional photolithography, an inert, frozen CO(2) resist is demonstrated that forms an in situ shadow mask. Contact with a room-temperature micro-featured stamp is used to pattern the resist. After thin film deposition, the remaining CO(2) is sublimed to lift off unwanted material. Pixel densities of 325 pixels-per-inch are shown.

Displacive In-Plane Ferroelectricity with Domain-Specific Curie Temperature in Van der Waals Semiconductors.

Van der Waals bilayers assembled by mechanical stacking of 2D layers have been shown to realize symmetry-breaking mechanisms, such as sliding- or moiré ferroelectricity, which are without equivalent in 3D ferroelectrics. Here, we discuss emergent, highly unconventional behavior in thicker semiconducting few-layer SnS(e) van der Waals ferroelectrics crystallizing in a distorted polar structure, obtained by bottom-up synthesis. Electron diffraction at variable temperature demonstrates a gradual displacive transformation between the polar low-temperature and symmetric high-temperature phase, with

Halogen Bonding as a Tool to Control Morphology and Charge Transport in Organic Semiconductors.

The solid-state structure and morphology of organic semiconductors (OSCs) are critical in determining the performance of organic electronic devices, as they directly influence charge carrier mobility. Improved molecular packing and ordering are key to achieving better device performance. While halogen bonding (XB) has been extensively used in supramolecular crystal engineering, its potential for organic electronics remains largely untapped. Here, we show that strong and directional XB can significantly enhance the morphology and optoelectronic properties of a pyridine-substituted naphthalene d

Dark-to-Bright Exciton Transition in 2D Janus Excitonic Semiconductors via Metal Cation Alloying.

Monolayer Janus transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are intrinsically polarized two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors with broken mirror symmetry, offering additional degrees of freedom for exciton and spin-orbit engineering. However, controlled access to tunable excitonic ground states has remained largely inaccessible. Here, we report a composition-dependent transition from bright to dark excitonic behavior in alloyed Janus TMDs (SeMoxW1-xS), synthesized via a plasma-assisted epitaxial replacement process. This method enables the reliable transformation of MoxW1-xSe2 into structurally orde

1D Silver Organochalcogenide Semiconductors: Color Tunable Luminescence, Polarized Emission, and Long-Range Exciton Diffusion.

Metal organochalcogenides (MOCs) represent a promising class of organic-inorganic hybrid semiconductors with unique light-matter interactions. Their hybrid nature enables extensive structural and optoelectronic tunability via ligand engineering. In this study, we systematically modulated the electronic properties of ligands using Cl and Me functional groups, achieving precise control over the optoelectronic properties of Ag-based MOCs. Structural analysis revealed that these MOCs adopt a one-dimensional (1D) chain structure with organic ligands surrounding a Ag-chalcogen core. Density function

Ultrasound-Assisted Mineralization of 2,4-Dinitrotoluene in Industrial Wastewater Using Persulfate Coupled with Semiconductors.

Oxidative degradation of 2,4-dinitrotoluenes in aqueous solution was executed using persulfate combined with semiconductors motivated by ultrasound (probe type, 20 kHz). Batch-mode experiments were performed to elucidate the effects of diverse operation variables on the sono-catalytic performance, including the ultrasonic power intensity, dosage of persulfate anions, and semiconductors. Owing to pronounced scavenging behaviors caused by benzene, ethanol, and methanol, the chief oxidants were presumed to be sulfate radicals which originated from persulfate anions, motivated via either the ultra

Deliberate and Accidental Gas-Phase Alkali Doping of Chalcogenide Semiconductors: Cu(In,Ga)Se2.

Alkali metal doping is essential to achieve highly efficient energy conversion in Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGSe) solar cells. Doping is normally achieved through solid state reactions, but recent observations of gas-phase alkali transport in the kesterite sulfide (Cu2ZnSnS4) system (re)open the way to a novel gas-phase doping strategy. However, the current understanding of gas-phase alkali transport is very limited. This work (i) shows that CIGSe device efficiency can be improved from 2% to 8% by gas-phase sodium incorporation alone, (ii) identifies the most likely routes for gas-phase alkali transport

Optical and spectroscopic studies on tannery wastes as a possible source of organic semiconductors.

Tanning industry produces a large quantity of solid wastes which contain hide proteins in the form of protein shavings containing chromium salts. The chromium wastes are the main concern from an environmental stand point of view, because chrome wastes posses a significant disposal problem. The present work is devoted to investigate the possibility of utilizing these wastes as a source of organic semi-conductors as an alternative method instead of the conventional ones. The chemical characterization of these wastes was determined. In addition, the Horizontal Attenuated Total Reflection (HATR) F

Solid-state 29Si, 113Cd, 119Sn, and 31P NMR studies of II-IV-P2 semiconductors.

Solid-state 29Si, 113Cd, 119Sn, and 31P MAS NMR spectra are reported on a series of II-IV-P2 compounds. In favorable cases (e.g., high degree of crystallinity, low concentration of unpaired electrons), well-defined spectra, with sharp lines for each specific nearest-neighbor configuration, are observed; in such cases, expected J coupling patterns are also seen. High-resolution solid-state NMR studies of this type provide useful information on structure (disorder), doping, and electron-mediated coupling in semiconductor systems.

Selective sparsity-enhanced synchronization in disordered semiconductor laser networks.

Biological networks tend to leverage selective sparsity as an economic strategy to optimize function while minimizing wiring costs. In contrast, achieving synchronization in engineered systems such as semiconductor laser arrays is traditionally expected to require resource-intensive coupling to overcome intrinsic frequency disorders. We demonstrate that selectively coupled sparse networks can outperform fully connected architectures, achieving near-complete synchronization with a significantly reduced coupling budget. Using an evolutionary algorithm, we identify a "pairing opposites" principle

Biomimetic ferroelectric-semiconductor transistor enables neuronal multisensory integration.

Human brain seamlessly integrates multisensory stimuli to synthesize complementary information for enhanced perceptions, depending on neural principles of superadditivity, inverse effectiveness, and temporal congruency. Replicating multisensory integration in artificial intelligences has remained challenging due to the inefficiency of algorithmic fusions and the absence of hardware-native mechanisms. Here, we demonstrate biomimetic audiovisual integration at the device level of Bi2O2Se ferroelectric-semiconductor field-effect transistors (FeS-FETs) through multiphysics coupling. Our FeS-FETs s

Structured light-matter interaction in semiconductor cavity quantum electrodynamics.

A cavity quantum electrodynamics system consisting of a confined single photon and a single quantum emitter serves as a fundamental block for quantum optics and photonic quantum technologies. The canonical optical mode used in the conventional cavity quantum electrodynamics features a uniform polarization distribution, leading to the scalar light-matter interaction in most existing experiments. Despite the rapid progress in the generation of structured light with spatially varied polarizations, the structured light-matter interaction, especially at the single-quanta level, is highly intriguing

Patterning of layered semiconductor GeS2 by laser photooxidation and water immersion.

Common patterning methods, such as lithography and laser ablation, have detrimental effects on electronic device components because of lithographic-resist residues and laser-induced heat. These effects are particularly significant in two-dimensional layered materials owing to their ultimate thinness. In this study, a lithography-free patterning method was developed using a laser power lower than that required for laser ablation. This method is based on laser photooxidation and the subsequent etching of the formed oxide. Laser irradiation of exfoliated flakes of GeS2-a layered semiconductor-and

Electrostatic control of the proximity effect in the bulk of semiconductor-superconductor hybrids.

The proximity effect in semiconductor-superconductor nanowires is expected to generate an induced gap in the semiconductor. The magnitude of this induced gap, together with the semiconductor properties like spin-orbit coupling and g-factor, depends on the coupling between the materials. It is predicted that this coupling can be adjusted through the use of electric fields. We study this phenomenon in InSb/Al/Pt hybrids using nonlocal spectroscopy. We show that these hybrids can be tuned such that the semiconductor and superconductor are strongly coupled. In this case, the induced gap is similar

Toward Surface Chemistry of Semiconductor Nanocrystals at an Atomic-Molecular Level.

ConspectusProperties of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals with a single-crystalline structure are largely dominated by their surface structure at an atomic-molecular level, which is not well understood and controlled, due to a lack of experimental tools. However, if viewing the nanocrystal surface as three relatively independent spatial zones (i.e., crystal facets, inorganic-ligands interface, and ligands monolayer), we may approach an atomic-molecular level by coupling advanced experimental techniques and theoretical calculations.Semiconductor nanocrystals of interest are mainly based on c

Super-Resolution Fluorescence Imaging for Semiconductor Nanoscale Metrology and Inspection.

The increase in the number and complexity of process levels in semiconductor production has driven the need for the development of new measurement methods that can evaluate semiconductor devices at the critical dimensions of fine patterns and simultaneously inspect nanoscale contaminants or defects. However, conventional optical inspection methods often fail to resolve device patterns or defects at the level of tens of nanometers required for device development owing to their diffraction-limited resolutions. In this study, we used the stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (STORM) techni

Towards π-wires on a semiconductor surface: Benzyne on Si(001).

Towards the goal of covalently bound molecular wires on silicon, the adsorption of benzyne on Si(001) was studied by means of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), and density functional calculations (DFT). The benzyne molecule is found to adsorb preferentially via the strained triple bond on one dimer of the Si(001) surface which results in an intact π system covalently bound to the surface. With increasing coverage, the molecules primarily adsorb along the dimer rows; on stepped surfaces, these molecular wir
