Epiglottic cyst as an etiological factor of globus sensation.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Globus is a subjective complaint that describes a sensation of a lump or a foreign body in the throat. Despite being a well-known and common clinical condition, the etiological factors have not been definitely elucidated yet. The study was set up to ascertain the relationship between epiglottic cysts and globus sensation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients undergoing investigation and treatments for globus sensation were included in the study. Patients with epiglottic cysts but no other possible causes of globus sensation were constituted the series of patients. Patients wer

Damage to the bladder neck alters autonomous activity and its sensitivity to cholinergic agonists.

OBJECTIVE: To identify and describe changes to the motor component of the motor/sensory system, which contributes to sensation during the filling phase of the micturition cycle, as a result of surgically induced bladder pathology, i.e. damage to the bladder neck and outlet obstruction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adult male guinea pigs (294-454 g) were assigned initially into three groups: (i) normal guinea pigs with no surgical intervention (control, seven); (ii) guinea pigs which, with full surgical anaesthesia, had a silver ring implanted around the bladder neck (obstructed, 13); and (iii) guin

A comparison of five tests for determining hand sensibility.

Three hundred seventeen normal fingers and 612 fingers in 153 hands with carpal tunnel syndrome were tested for sensibility using the Weinstein Enhanced Sensory Test (WEST) with calibrated monofilaments, by static two-point discrimination (s2PD) and moving two-point discrimination (m2PD), using the Disk-Criminator, and by Strauch's ten test. Equivalent Semmes-Weinstein monofilament (SWM) test values were also determined as a gold standard for comparison. With both the WEST and SWM test values, the norms for interpretation have an unacceptably wide latitude because of the use of an ordinal scal

How good are patients with panic disorder at perceiving their heartbeats?

Palpitations are among the most common symptoms of panic attacks. The present review addresses the question of whether systematic differences in heartbeat perception exist between patients with panic disorder and control subjects. Paradigms involving the comparison of heartbeat sensations with external signals such as discrimination task have failed to find group differences. Recent improvements in methodology may give clearer results in future studies. The majority of studies using the mental tracking paradigm have shown that panic disorder patients show a better heartbeat perception than con

Understanding the sensory irregularities of esophageal disease.

Symptoms relating to esophageal sensory abnormalities can be encountered in the clinical environment. Such sensory abnormalities may be present in demonstrable disease, such as erosive esophagitis, and in the ostensibly normal esophagus, such as non-erosive reflux disease or functional chest pain. In this review, the authors discuss esophageal sensation and the esophageal pain system. In addition, the authors provide a primer concerning the techniques that are available for investigating the autonomic nervous system, neuroimaging and neurophysiology of esophageal sensory function. Such technol

The Aetiology of Sensory Impairment in Pelvic Organ Prolapse: A Prospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Women with pelvic organ prolapse (POP) have reduced vaginal sensation. Vaginal birth has been associated with both sensory nerve injury and prolapse. It is unclear whether the impaired vaginal sensation seen in POP is caused during childbirth or by the prolapsing tissues themselves. METHODS: The objective was to perform to our knowledge the first study to compare vaginal sensation between women with postnatal POP and women without postnatal POP. A prospective cohort study (Canadian task force classification II-2) of 124 primiparous women who underwent Pelvic Organ

Sensation-Sparing Correction of Inverted Nipples Using the 'Drawbridge' Flap Approach.

INTRODUCTION: An inverted nipple can cause significant functional and psychologic disturbance to women. The holy grail of any surgical technique to correct this is to restore adequate nipple projection and at the same time, try to preserve lactation and nipple sensation. We describe our experience using an inferior dermal nipple-areolar interposition flap to correct the inverted nipple alongside with selective release of the lactiferous ducts of the nipple. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We have employed this technique successfully in 97 cases of inverted nipples in 60 patients with follow-up periods

Abnormal trigeminal sensory processing in obese mice.

Obesity is associated with several pain disorders including headache. The effects of obesity on the trigeminal nociceptive system, which mediates headache, remain unknown. We used 2 complementary mouse models of obesity (high-fat diet and leptin deficiency) to examine this. We assessed capsaicin-induced nocifensive behavior and photophobia in obese and control mice. Calcium imaging was used to determine the effects of obesity on the activity of primary trigeminal afferents in vitro. We found that obese mice had a normal acute response to a facial injection of capsaicin, but they developed phot

Anxiety sensitivity, catastrophic misinterpretations and panic self-efficacy in the prediction of panic disorder severity: towards a tripartite cognitive model of panic disorder.

The present study examined the contribution of three main cognitive factors (i.e., anxiety sensitivity, catastrophic misinterpretations of bodily symptoms, and panic self-efficacy) in predicting panic disorder (PD) severity in a sample of patients with a principal diagnosis of panic disorder. It was hypothesized that anxiety sensitivity (AS), catastrophic misinterpretation of bodily sensations, and panic self-efficacy are uniquely related to panic disorder severity. One hundred and sixty-eight participants completed measures of AS, catastrophic misinterpretations of panic-like sensations, and

Psychophysiological, somatic, and affective changes across the menstrual cycle in women with panic disorder.

This study explored menstrual symptoms, somatic focus, negative affect, and psychophysiological responding across the menstrual cycle in women with panic disorder and controls. Women with and without panic disorder completed a psychophysiological task and self-report measures of menstrual symptoms, somatic focus, and negative affect on 4 occasions across 2 menstrual cycles (twice during intermenstrual and premenstrual phases). Women in the panic disorder group exhibited greater skin conductance magnitude and more frequent skin conductance responses to anxiety-provoking stimuli during the preme

From accuracy to expectation: A reframed view of heartbeat counting and panic disorder.

Enhanced heartbeat perception is believed to contribute to the development and maintenance of panic disorder. Studies have demonstrated better Heartbeat Counting Task (HCT) performance in individuals with panic disorder compared to controls. This has been proposed to reflect increased interoceptive accuracy, which is thought to increase the risk of individuals perceiving bodily sensations, which in turn may trigger panic attacks. Drawing on contemporary evidence that HCT performance may reflect heartbeat estimation, rather than perception, we argue that greater HCT performance in panic disorde

Cold Sensation and Gastric Accommodation in Functional Dyspepsia: An Exploratory Study of Autonomic Function.

INTRODUCTION: Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a heterogeneous disorder characterized by impaired gastric accommodation and autonomic dysfunction as key pathophysiological features. Cold sensation (Hie), a commonly recognized subjective bodily sensation in East Asia, reflects autonomic instability. However, its association with gastric accommodation in FD remains unclear. METHODS: This single-center prospective observational study enrolled healthy volunteers (HVs) and patients with FD. Cold sensation was assessed using a validated questionnaire. Gastric accommodation was evaluated using a standar

Mapping acute alcohol effects on bodily sensations: A cross-dimensional interoceptive approach.

BACKGROUND: Interoceptive processes may underlie maladaptive patterns of alcohol use. Bodily sensations experienced during alcohol intoxication could therefore reveal distinct mechanistic components relevant for addiction theory and research. Here, we apply novel tools to examine how intoxication impacts somatic awareness using bodily maps and a cardiac interoception task. METHODS: In a double-blind, within-subjects, placebo-controlled study, social drinkers (n = 37, 17 female) were administered 0.4 g/kg of alcohol. We measured changes in self-reported bodily sensations during the ascending a

Relationship between sensation seeking, alcohol problems and bulimic symptoms: a community-based, longitudinal study.

PURPOSE: The association of bulimic symptoms with sensation seeking is uncertain; however, both behaviors have been linked to alcohol problems. We assessed in a longitudinal, community-based setting whether sensation seeking in adolescence is associated with bulimic symptoms in early adulthood, also accounting for alcohol problems. METHODS: Finnish men (N = 2000) and women (N = 2467) born between 1974-1979 completed Zuckerman's sensation seeking scale (SSS) at age 18. How useful are manometric tests of anorectal function in the management of defecation disorders?

OBJECTIVES: The clinical usefulness of assessing anorectal physiology has not been systematically examined. Our aims were to evaluate whether manometric tests of anorectal function influence the management and outcome of patients with defecation disorders, and to identify the patients who may most benefit from this assessment. METHODS: Using a standard protocol of anorectal manometry rectal sensation, saline continence, simulated defecation, and pudendal nerve terminal latency tests, we studied 143 consecutive patients (m/f = 27/116) and followed their progress over 18 months. RESULTS: Tests

Differential fear of cardiopulmonary sensations in emergency room noncardiac chest pain patients.

Fear of bodily sensations has received extensive attention in relation to panic disorder, and more recently, other types of anxiety pathology and chronic pain problems. Extending this work, the present study examined fear of bodily sensations and its underlying dimensions in emergency room patients with Noncardiac Chest Pain (NCCP; n = 63). We posited a "differential specificity" hypothesis, expecting that specific cardiopulmonary fears would be more strongly associated with NCCP symptoms relative to other bodily fears. As hypothesized, participants reported cardiopulmonary sensations as signi
