Are There Differences in Central Coherence and Set Shifting Across the Subtypes of Anorexia Nervosa?: A Systematic Review.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) has been associated with weaknesses in central coherence and set shifting. In this line, it has been proposed to directly address these neuropsychological features in treatment (e.g., cognitive remediation therapy). It is not clear, however, whether the 2 subtypes of AN, the restricting (AN-R) and bingeing/purging (AN-BP) type, have the same amount of problems in these domains. A systematic search of the literature was conducted, using the databases Web of Science and PubMed, looking for studies on the comparison of AN-R and AN-BP in performing central coherence/set-shift

The association between illness representations, coping resources, and subjective well-being among family caregivers of prolonged mechanical ventilation patients.

Background: Prolonged mechanical ventilation (PMV) imposes emotional, physical, and social burdens on family caregivers, yet limited research focuses on their subjective well-being (SWB). This study aimed to explore the factors associated with SWB among family caregivers of hospitalized PMV patients, guided by the Self-Regulation Model. Methods: A total of 134 family caregivers completed questionnaires assessing SWB, illness representations, sense of coherence, and perceived social support. Results: Path analysis revealed that positive illness representations-such as perceptions of shorter ill

METHODS: A sample of 31 female inpatients with a reported history of sexual trauma (two thirds abused in childhood, one third raped in adulthood) were compared with 31 female inpatients with similar sociodemographic backgrounds, matched for age and psychiatric diagnosis. FINDINGS: Compared with the sexually nontraumatized patients, the patients with a reported history

Factors affecting disruption in families of adults with mental illness.

PURPOSE: This study examined relationships between vulnerability/risk and protective factors, and family functioning in women family members of adults with serious mental illness. DESIGN AND METHODS: Using a descriptive, correlational design, this secondary analysis examined characteristics of the family member with mental illness (e.g., diagnosis, level of care) and measures of caregiver stigma and strain, client dependence, family disruption, sense of coherence, and resourcefulness. FINDINGS: Family disruption was greatest in women who provided direct care and whose family member had major

Evaluation of the prognostic value of the health assessment form among patients clinically ready for discharge.

The aim of the study was to identify patterns of physical, psychological, and social conditions that may be of prognostic value when it comes to assessing continued care of patients clinically ready for discharge; a related aim was to evaluate instruments used for this identification, especially a Swedish version of the health assessment form. The sample consisted of 53 consecutive patients (mean age 82.8 years, SD = 6.6 years) All patients came from their own homes and were admitted to surgical and orthopaedic departments. Interviews were carried out on the day the patients were assessed as m

Do psychological attributes matter for adherence to antihypertensive medication? The Finnish Public Sector Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: Psychological factors may be important determinants of adherence to antihypertensive medication, as they have been repeatedly found to be associated with an increased risk of hypertension, coronary heart disease, and health-damaging behaviours. We examined the importance of several psychological attributes (sense of coherence, optimism, pessimism, hostility, anxiety) with regard to antihypertensive medication adherence assessed by pharmacy refill records. METHODS: A total of 1021 hypertensive participants, aged 26-63 years, who were employees in eight towns and 12 hospitals in Finl

The objective of the present paper was to investigate the relationship between global orientation to life and its components on the one hand, and socio-demographic factors on the other, with regard to early postpartum emotional disorders. METHODS: The study included 643 patients hospitalized in obstetric departments in Lublin, Poland, who had had a spontaneous vaginal delivery. Research instruments included: the Edinburgh Postnatal Dep

Psychosocial impact and personality predictors of coherence feeling among girls with acne.

OBJECTIVE: The extent to which acne influences the emotional life of adolescents is a matter of discussion; but people with acne are prone to emotional and psychological disturbances. METHODS: 54 adolescent girls with acne were studied for their personality variables that are related to high coherence. Sense of coherence, e.g. meaningfulness of life, is crucial to cope successfully with stressors of living: it expresses the belief that a high probability exists that things will work out as well as can reasonably be expected. 58 adolescent girls without acne were in the control group. RESULTS

Well-being and its relation to coping ability in patients with colo-rectal and gastric cancer before and after surgery.

The aims of this study were, first, to describe and compare the perceived well-being and general health, symptoms and coping ability of a group of patients with colo-rectal and gastric cancer before and after surgery; secondly, to describe the patients' perceptions of the hospital stay and their difficulties after discharge from the hospital; and thirdly, to investigate a possible relationship between sense of coherence and well-being. Seventy-nine (36 men, 43 women) consecutively selected patients diagnosed with colo-rectal or gastric cancer participated in the study. The Health Index (HI), t

Irritable bowel syndrome subtypes differ in body awareness, psychological symptoms and biochemical stress markers.

AIM: To elucidate the differences in somatic, psychological and biochemical pattern between the subtypes of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). METHODS: Eighty IBS patients, 30 diarrhoea predominant (D-IBS), 16 constipation predominant (C-IBS) and 34 alternating IBS (A-IBS) underwent physiotherapeutic examinations for dysfunctions in body movements and awareness and were compared to an apparently healthy control group (AHC). All groups answered questionnaires for gastrointestinal and psychological symptoms. Biochemical variables were analysed in blood. RESULTS: The D-IBS group showed less body a

Fostering resilience during COVID-19: a salutogenic framework for managing disruptive change.

COVID-19 presented a poignant learning opportunity for managing and supporting employees' well-being in work contexts affected by disruptive change and unforeseen disaster events. The retail sector was particularly challenged to maintain a resilient workforce during this time. Employees worked on the frontline without having the training or skills like those of health workers, to cope with the psychological demands incurred by working face-to-face with the public. To glean insights into organizational and management practices that foster resilience during times of disruptive change, this study

Structural equation model based on salutogenesis theory for evaluating factors affecting health-related quality of life in adolescents with moyamoya disease.

Moyamoya disease is a cerebrovascular disorder and a significant chronic health concern requiring regular monitoring to control the disease and its related complications. We examined a hypothetical model by integrating the concepts of a structural health-related quality-of-life model based on the salutogenesis theory, and to identify how social support, sense of coherence, and stress contribute to health behaviors, subjective health status, and quality of life in adolescents with moyamoya disease among 239 adolescents in Korea. A structural equation model was used to analyze the data. The fitn
