A case of retinitis pigmentosa and asteroid hyalosis: diagnosis and low vision management.

Unexplained symptoms of night blindness in low vision patient signaled the need for careful fundus examination. When opacities of the media obscured potential signs of disease, perimetry, color vision testing, electrodiagnostic testing and dark adaptometry were needed to establish a diagnosis of retinitis pigmentosa.

Peripheral neuropathies of infancy.

Over a 33-year period, 260 patients (< 17 years of age; 119 males, 141 females) from New South Wales, Australia who had peripheral neuropathies confirmed by nerve biopsy, were studied. Of these, 50 infants presented with symptoms or signs of neuropathy under 1 year of age: including 24 patients with demyelinating neuropathies and 21 axonal neuropathies; a further five patients had spinal muscular atrophy with associated secondary sensory axonopathy. Nineteen infants had hereditary motor sensory neuropathy, of whom 13 had myelin protein mutations confirmed by molecular genetic studies. Peripher

Impact of hearing aid use on depression and quality of life in older patients with age-related hearing loss: A focus on social relationships.

Hearing loss is a sensory deficit prevalent in older adults. In South Korea, over 40 % of individuals aged 60 and older reportedly experience unilateral or bilateral hearing loss. An association between perceived social support and satisfaction with hearing aid use has been reported. Although most previous studies focused on the direct effects of hearing aid use, its impact on social relationships remains poorly explored. We analyzed data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging between 2006 and 2022 for those aged 65 years or above. Outcome measures in this study were depressive symptoms a

The spatial relationships among cutaneous, muscle sensory and motoneuron axons during development of the chick hindlimb.

Previous studies have suggested that interactions with other axons are important in sensory axon pathfinding in the developing chick hindlimb. Yet the nature of these interactions remains unknown, in part because information about the spatial relationships among the different kinds of axons is lacking. To obtain this information, we combined retrograde axonal tracing with an immunofluorescent labelling approach that distinguishes between sensory and motoneuron axons. This allowed us to follow the trajectories of sensory axons having a known destination, while also identifying their neighbors.

Pulsed electromagnetic fields mediate sensory nerve regulation for bone formation in aging models.

Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) enhance bone formation to combat osteoporosis, yet the mechanisms by which they promote bone health during aging remain unclear. This study shows PEMFs enhance new bone formation and innervation, promoting osteogenesis and reducing adipogenesis in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in aging male mice. PEMF-induced osteogenesis is impaired by sensory nerve dysfunction in this model. Mechanistically, PEMFs stimulate sensory nerves to secrete semaphorin 3A (Sema3A), and depleting these nerves or knocking out Sema3a eliminates PEMFs' bone-forming effects. Sema3A in

[Gogi (word-meaning) aphasia].

Gogi (word meaning) aphasia is an aphasic syndrome originally described by Tsuneo Imura in 1943. According to Imura, this syndrome is characterized by 4 symptoms: (1) difficulty in comprehending the meaning of a word despite perfect perception of the sound of the word; (2) presence of word amnesia and verbal paraphasia; (3) preservation of the ability to repeat spoken words; and (4) characteristic disturbances in reading and writing, in which Kana (Japanese syllabogram) can be correctly read and written, but Kanji (Japanese logogram) is read and transcribed in a peculiar way without comprehens

Brachial amyotrophic diplegia in a patient with human immunodeficiency virus infection: widening the spectrum of motor neuron diseases occurring with the human immunodeficiency virus.

Although amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and progressive spinal muscular atrophy have been recognized to occur in association with human immunodeficiency virus infection, to our knowledge, brachial amyotrophic diplegia, a form of segmental motor neuron disease, has not been previously reported. Brachial amyotrophic diplegia results in severe lower motor neuron weakness and atrophy of the upper extremities in the absence of bulbar or lower extremity involvement, pyramidal features, bowel and bladder incontinence, and sensory loss. We describe a human immunodeficiency virus-seropositive man withou

The self-assembly behavior of ovotransferrin nanospheres driven by hydrophobic interaction and their application in astaxanthin fortified almond milk drink.

The self-assembly of food-grade proteins into nanostructures enables precise delivery of active ingredients, enhancing food stability and sensory quality. Here, we develop novel ovotransferrin nanospheres (OVT NSs) using a simple and efficient method under mild reaction conditions. OVT is hydrolyzed into peptides by subtilisin A at 25 °C and pH 7.5; when critical micelle concentration (CMC) exceeds 50 μg/mL, amphiphilic OVT peptides aggregate by hydrophobic interactions and self-assemble into spherical nanomicelles by β-sheet stacking. Mature OVT NSs have internal hollow structure and surface

Assessment of Patients With ARFID Presenting to Multi-Disciplinary Tertiary Care Program.

There are no standard assessment approaches for Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). We describe our approach to multidisciplinary assessment after assessing more than 550 patients with ARFID. We collected online survey (ARFID-specific instruments, measures of anxiety, depression) measures. Electronic medical record data (mental health and gastrointestinal diagnoses, micronutrient and bone density assessments, and growth parameters) were extracted for the 239 patients with ARFID seen between 2018 and 2021 with both parent and patient responses to online surveys. We identified 5 s

Stochastic resonance stimulation effect on stability during walking in people with Parkinson disease.

People with Parkinson disease (PwPD) often face challenges with maintaining balance while walking, which can stem from sensory dysfunction. Studies have identified different biomechanical strategies that aid in preserving upright balance control. Stochastic resonance (SR) stimulation delivers sub-threshold electrical noise to enhance the detection capabilities of dysfunctional sensory systems. Yet, the effectiveness of SR in enhancing gait stability in PwPD is undetermined. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of SR on balance control during visually perturbed walking in Pw

A cell type-specific switch in GluN2D NMDA receptors drives cortical circuit hyperexcitability and sensory-driven cortical synchronization deficits in a Fragile X Syndrome model.

BACKGROUND: Altered sensory processing and sensitivity are prevalent in Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) and may be mediated by dysfunction of cortical circuits. Evidence from individuals with FXS and/or the FXS mouse model, Fmr1 KO, indicates hyperexcitability of sensory cortical circuits, deficits in sensory-driven circuit synchrony and sensory-induced seizures. GluN2D-containing NMDA receptors (NMDARs) are enriched in cortical inhibitory neurons. We hypothesized that selective activation of GluN2D may correct cortical circuit hyperexcitability, seizures, and synchrony deficits in Fmr1 KO mice. MET

Auckland hearing science discovery and translation in purinergic signaling and inner ear therapeutics.

The inner ear is a complex sensory organ responsible for hearing and balance. It is deeply embedded in the temporal bone with challenging access for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Stress and injury to the peripheral hearing organ (cochlea) lead to temporary or permanent sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), which is the most common form of hearing loss resulting from cellular and molecular damage to the sensory hair cells and primary auditory neurons in the spiral ganglion. These cells cannot regenerate, and their loss leads to hearing disability. Hearing aids can amplify sound and improve

The Effect of Hearing Aid Use on the Association Between Hearing Loss and Brain Structure in Older Adults.

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies have shown an association between poorer hearing thresholds and smaller brain tissue volumes in older adults. Several underlying causal mechanisms have been opted, with a sensory deprivation hypothesis as one of the most prominent. If hearing deprivation would lead to less brain volume, hearing aids could be hypothesized to moderate this pathway by restoration of hearing. This study aims to investigate whether such a moderating effect of hearing aids exists. DESIGN: The authors conducted a cross-sectional study involving aging participants of the population-based Ro

Sensory neuropathy and associated factors among patients living with human immuno-deficiency virus in Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Despite high prevalence of sensory neuropathy among individuals living with HIV, there is no comprehensive information regarding variables that determine sensory neuropathy onset among the patients who attended health care facilities. In conditions where there is a high number of patients with sensory neuropathy, clinicians confront challenges in managing the problem, and increase the burden of health care expenditures. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of peripheral neuropathy and associated factors among people living with HIV in Africa. METHODS: To ensure the trans

The Arrangement of the Peripheral Olfactory System of Pleuragramma antarcticum: A Well-Exploited Small Sensor, an Aided Water Flow, and a Prominent Effort in Primary Signal Elaboration.

The olfactory system is constituted in a consistent way across vertebrates. Nasal structures allow water/air to enter an olfactory cavity, conveying the odorants to a sensory surface. There, the olfactory neurons form, with their axons, a sensory nerve projecting to the telencephalic zone-named the olfactory bulb. This organization comes with many different arrangements, whose meaning is still a matter of debate. A morphological description of the olfactory system of many teleost species is present in the literature; nevertheless, morphological investigations rarely provide a quantitative appr
