Effect of work schedule on prospective antidepressant prescriptions in Sweden: a 2-year sex-stratified analysis using national drug registry data.

INTRODUCTION: Depression-related mood disorders affect millions of people worldwide and contribute to substantial morbidity and disability, yet little is known about the effects of work scheduling on depression. This study used a large Swedish survey to prospectively examine the effects of work schedule on registry-based antidepressant prescriptions in females and males over a 2-year period. METHODS: The study was based on an approximately representative sample (n=3980 males, 4663 females) of gainfully employed participants in the Swedish Longitudinal Occupational Survey of Health. Sex-strati

Was an epidemic of gonorrhoea among heterosexuals attending an Adelaide sexual health services associated with variations in sex work policing policy?

BACKGROUND: A review of historical trends in gonococcal diagnoses made at the Adelaide Sexual Health Clinic (ASHC), South Australia, identified a substantial rise in diagnoses among heterosexuals between 2006 and 2010. Sex work is illegal in South Australia, regulated in Victoria and legal in New South Wales. This and other factors that could have influenced the epidemic were explored in this analysis. METHODS: Retrospective analyses of gonorrhoea diagnoses made by sexual health services between 1990 and 2012 in three Australian state capitals, Melbourne (Victoria) and Sydney (New South Wales

Health indicators among low income women who report a history of sex work: the population based Northern California Young Women's Survey.

OBJECTIVES: We examined differences in demographic characteristics, HIV related risk behaviour, prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STI), and HIV and other health concerns among women with and without a history of sex work. METHODS: A secondary analysis of a population based, cross sectional survey of young, low income women in northern California. RESULTS: Of the 2543 women interviewed, 8.9% reported a history of sex work. These women reported more lifetime male sexual partners, were more likely to use drugs before sex, and were more likely to have a history of having sex with pa

Multi-level Risks Associated with Partner and Client Violence Among Trans Women Who Do Sex Work in San Francisco, 2023-2024.

Syndemic conditions of sex work and violence are associated with elevated HIV risk for trans women. Less is known about the types of violence experienced by trans women who engage in sex work. We examined the prevalence of types of violence for trans women engaged in sex work and correlates of interpersonal violence (IPV). Data were from National HIV Biobehavioral Surveillance among trans women in San Francisco, 2023-2024. Demographic characteristics, substance use, sex work, and IPV were selfreported. Multivariable logistic regression identified factors associated with IPV among trans women e

Legal status, sex work engagement and inequities in the HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis cascade among migrant women in 11 European countries.

BACKGROUND: Migrant women account for a substantial proportion of new HIV diagnoses in Europe, yet remain underrepresented in HIV prevention research. Little is known about how legal status and national policy context shape engagement with PrEP among migrant women, particularly those without secure documentation. We assessed the PrEP cascade and HIV prevention preferences among migrant women, examining how legal status, sex work engagement and national reimbursement policies drive inequities in access. METHODS: We conducted a community-led, cross-sectional survey (June-July 2025) of 521 HIV-n

Self-collection for high-risk HPV-RNA detection among HIV-seropositive and HIV-seronegative women engaged in sex work in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Evidence of self-collection human papillomavirus (HPV)-RNA testing in cervical cancer screening is limited among women with HIV (WHIV). Most studies are in low-risk patient populations in high-income countries. We examine the prevalence of high-risk HPV (hrHPV) using the APTIMA HPV-RNA assay on self-collected versus provider-collected specimens, and the associated risk factors for high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN2/3) among women engaged in sex work in Kenya. Among WHIV, we examine the performance of both collection methods for the detection of CIN2/3. METHODS: Pa

Preferences for an HIV Self-Testing Program Among Women who Engage in sex Work and use Drugs in Kazakhstan, Central Asia.

PURPOSE: Women engaged in sex work (WESW) who use drugs face barriers to HIV testing. HIV self-testing (HST) may empower sex workers to learn their HIV status; however, it is not scaled up among WESW in Kazakhstan. This study aimed to explore barriers and facilitators to traditional HIV testing and HST among this population. METHOD: We conducted 30 in-depth interviews (IDIs) and four focus groups (FGs) with Kazakhstani WESW who use drugs. Pragmatic analysis was used to explore key themes from qualitative data. RESULTS: Participants welcomed HST due to its potential to overcome logistical cha

'He's not my pimp': toward an understanding of intimate male partner involvement in female sex work at the Mexico-US border.

Female sex work is often perceived as women being controlled by men. We used surveys and qualitative interviews with female sex workers and their intimate partners in two Northern Mexico cities to examine couples' own perceptions of their relationships and male partners' involvement in sex work. Among 214 couples, the median age was 34 and relationship duration was approximately 3 years. Only 10 women in the survey reported having a pimp, and the majority reported sole control over sex work decisions. Qualitative analyses revealed that while most men avoided direct involvement in sex work, the

Sex and gender specific pitfalls and challenges in cardiac rehabilitation: a working hypothesis towards better inclusivity in cardiac rehabilitation programmes.

Notwithstanding its acknowledged pivotal role for cardiovascular prevention, cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is still largely under prescribed, in almost 25% of patients owing an indication for. In addition, when considering differences concerning the two sexes, female individuals are underrepresented in CR programmes with lower referral rates, participation, and completion as compared to male counterpart. This picture becomes even more tangled with reference to gender, a complex socio-cultural construct characterized by four domains (gender identity, relation, role, and institutionalized gender).

Spatial transcriptomics and in situ immune cell profiling of the host ectocervical landscape of HIV infected Kenyan sex working women.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic immune activation is a hallmark of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection that significantly impacts disease pathogenesis. However, in-depth studies characterizing the immunological landscape of the ectocervix during chronic HIV infection remain scarce despite the importance of this tissue site for HIV transmission. METHODS: Ectocervical tissue samples were obtained from antiretroviral-naïve HIV-seropositive and -seronegative Kenyan female sex workers. These samples were assessed by spatial transcriptomics and Gene Set Enrichment Analysis. We further performed mult

Incidence and predictors of violence from clients, intimate partners and police in a prospective US-based cohort of women in sex work.

OBJECTIVE: Gender-based violence threatens women's health and safety. Female sex workers (FSWs) experience violence disproportionately, yet prospective data on violence predictors is lacking. In the first US-based prospective FSW cohort study, we examine incidence rates (IRs) and predictors of violence from distinct perpetrators: paying clients, non-paying intimate partners and police. METHODS: The parent cohort (Sex Workers and Police Promoting Health In Risky Environments) recruited street-based cisgender FSWs in urban Baltimore, MD (n=250) with 5 assessments at 3-month intervals through 12

Increased Cervical CD4+CCR5+ T Cells Among Kenyan Sex Working Women Using Depot Medroxyprogesterone Acetate.

Depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) is the most common hormonal contraceptive used by women in sub-Saharan Africa, however, it has been epidemiologically associated with HIV infections. To assess whether DMPA has an effect on the number and activation of HIV target cells, this study assessed the levels and phenotype of blood- and mucosal-derived HIV target cells among women using DMPA. Thirty-five HIV uninfected women from the Pumwani Sex Worker cohort from Nairobi, Kenya were enrolled in the study (15 using DMPA and 20 not using hormonal contraception). Blood (plasma and peripheral blood

Working towards convergence of the clinical management of differences of sex development/intersex conditions and the human rights framework: A case study.

OBJECTIVE: Medical treatments that aim to modify the appearance of the genitals in children who are born with a difference of sex development/intersex (DSD/I*) condition are highly controversial. Human Rights bodies worldwide have argued that such treatments are conflicting with the child's right of personal autonomy and should be legally restricted to the unique situation where the child's physical health is in danger. DESIGN: We here review the current status of legal initiatives in Europe that have addressed the issue of medical treatments in minors who have a DSD for which they have not b

Sex-Related Differences in White Matter Asymmetry and Its Implications for Verbal Working Memory in Psychosis High-Risk State.

Objective: Sexual dimorphism has been investigated in schizophrenia, although sex-specific differences among individuals who are at clinical high-risk (CHR) for developing psychosis have been inconclusive. This study aims to characterize sexual dimorphism of language areas in the brain by investigating the asymmetry of four white matter tracts relevant to verbal working memory in CHR patients compared to healthy controls (HC). HC typically show a leftward asymmetry of these tracts. Moreover, structural abnormalities in asymmetry and verbal working memory dysfunctions have been associated with

Sex-dependent prefrontal cortex activation in regular cocaine users: A working memory functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

Although two thirds of patients with a cocaine use disorder (CUD) are female, little is known about sex differences in the (neuro)pathology of CUD. The aim of this explorative study was to investigate sex-dependent differences in prefrontal cortex (PFC) functioning during a working memory (WM) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) task in regular cocaine users (CUs), as PFC deficits are implicated in the shift from recreational cocaine use to CUD. Neural activation was measured using fMRI during a standard WM task (n-back task) in 27 male and 28 female CUs and in 26 male and 28 female n

Development of the Experiences of Sex Work Stigma Scale Using Item Response Theory: Implications for Research on the Social Determinants of HIV.

While HIV stigma has received significant attention, limited work has been conducted on the measurement of intersecting stigmas. We developed the Experiences of Sex Work Stigma (ESWS) scale in the Dominican Republic (DR) and Tanzania. We conducted in-depth interviews with 20 female sex workers (FSW) per country to identify scale domains followed by cognitive debriefing interviews to assess content validity. Items were administered in a survey to FSW in DR (n = 211) and Tanzania (n = 205). Factor analysis established four sex work stigma domains including: shame (internalized), dignity (resiste

Differential Burden of HIV Among Adolescent Girls and Young Women by Places Associated With Sex Work: An Observational Study in Mombasa, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: The design of HIV prevention programs for adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) are informed by data on who is at highest risk and where they can be reached. Places (hotspots) associated with selling sex are an established outreach strategy for sex work (SW) programs but could be used to reach other AGYW at high risk. SETTING: This study took place in Mombasa, Kenya. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional, bio-behavioural survey among (N = 1193) sexually active AGYW aged 14-24 years recruited at hotspots. We compared HIV prevalence by subgroup (SW; transactional sex, TS; and n
