Most studies of sexually transmitted diseases in homosexual men have examined prevalence in clinic populations; for comparative purposes, we analyzed data from a survey of 4,329 gay men conducted in 1977. Among 4,212 respondents to the self-administered questionnaire, 66.8 per cent reported previous infection with pediculosis; 38.4 per cent, gonorrhea; 24.1 per cent, nonspecific urethritis; 18.1 per cent, venereal warts; 13.5 per cent, syphilis; 9.7 per cent, hepatitis; and 9.4 per cent, herpes. Number of different lifetime sexual partners best predicted histories of symphilis (r = .249), gono

The HLA profile of 148 unrelated, Chinese prostitutes (56 with repeated gonococcal infection, 31 with syphilis, 31 with gonorrhoea and syphilis, and 30 with no evidence of infection) was compared with that of 238 unrelated, healthy, Chinese control subjects. The joint occurrence of AW19 B17 was observed in 25.8% of prostitutes with double infections compared with 6.7% of control subjects, while that of A11 B15, on the other hand, was associated with a resistance to syphilis and gonorrhoea. The latter profile was observed in 46.7% of prostitutes in business for more than two years who were resi

Chlamydiae are being increasingly recognized as an important cause of human disease. The known geographical distribution of lymphogranuloma venereum and the role of chlamydiae as agents of sexually transmitted diseases are reviewed. The presence of chlamydiae in the urethra and the cervix, and their etiological relationship to genital infections, first recognized in connexion with ocular infections, have been proved in a number of studies in selected populations in a few countries. Chlamydiae appear to be the most important agent of nongonococcal urethritis, which in some cases appears now to

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) may be transmitted during sexual assault. In children, the isolation of a sexually transmitted organism may be the first indication that abuse has occurred. Although the presence of a sexually transmissible agent from a child beyond the neonatal period is suggestive of sexual abuse, exceptions do exist. In this review I discuss the issues of the transmissibility and diagnosis of STDs in the context of child sexual abuse. Rectal or genital infection with Chlamydia trachomatis among young children may be the result of perinatally acquired infection and may pe

OBJECTIVE: In order to explore current epidemic situation of sexually transmitted diseases (STD), especially its trends and related factors as the basis for working out the STD control program, a sentinel surveillance system was established in the period 1993-1996.
METHODS: Through adjustment of 26 sentinel sites based on the original STD prevalent in 16 surveillance cities were selected. The management was strengthened (such as supervision and feedback) and specific surveys were conducted in sentinel sites.
RESULTS: During the 4-year period, 202,866 cases were reported. The average annual i

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the anorectal region are disproportionally detected in risk populations such as men who have sex with men (MSM). However, due to changes in sexual behaviour they are increasingly diagnosed in heterosexual individuals. Due to the recent implementation of oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis together with lack of condom use, a further rise in STIs is expected.
OBJECTIVES: This review addresses epidemiology, clinical picture, diagnostic pitfalls and current therapy guidelines of "classical" bacterial STIs involving the anorectum.
CONCLUSIONS: S

Most important news are the reimbursement of post-exposure prophylaxis for HIV, change in treatment of gonococcal infections, increase of syphilis and sexually transmitted hepatitis C infections among HIV-infected men who have sex with men. Vaccination against papillomavirus (HPV) is not discussed here. Animal and human studies have shown that 28 days post-exposure prophylaxis for HIV initiated within 72 hours after the contact at risk could reduce the risk of HIV acquisition. This prophylaxis is now reimbursed in Belgium if it is prescribed by a HIV reference center, based on the Belgian cons

The spread of sexually transmitted diseases (e.g., chlamydia, syphilis, gonorrhea, HIV, etc.) across populations is a major concern for scientists and health agencies. In this context, both the data collection on sexual contact networks and the modeling of disease spreading are intensive contributions to the search for effective immunization policies. Here, the spreading of sexually transmitted diseases on bipartite scale-free graphs, representing heterosexual contact networks, is considered. We analytically derive the expression for the epidemic threshold and its dependence with the system si

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) represent some of the oldest and most prevalent infectious diseases of humans. Currently and with changes in lifestyles, the short list of STDs has grown to currently comprise 21 different infections and infestations. In this review, we concentrate on those infections that are common and which require special approach and handling. Gonorrhea and nongonococcal urethritis comprise more than half of STDs. The approach and management of these patients is briefly outlined. The important role contact tracing and education play in improving preventive practices of

Evaluating the adolescent with a genital lesion requires a thorough knowledge of the common and less-common STDs that cause genital findings. A thoughtful history and complete physical examination are always in order, as is testing for a particular suspected STD and for coexisting STDs, especially HIV.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) are gaining significant importance at present due to rapid spread of the diseases, high cost of treatment, and the increased risk of transmission of other STDs and AIDS. Current therapies available for symptomatic treatment of STDs and AIDS are quite expensive beyond the reach of common man and are associated with emergence of drug resistance. Many patients of STDs and AIDS are seeking help from alternative systems of medicines such as Unani, Chinese, Ayurvedic, naturopathy, and homeopathy. Since a long time, me

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) continue to be a significant and prevalent problem among adolescents. One in four sexually active teenagers are infected with one or more STDs. Certain STDs, including gonorrhea, chlamydia, and possibly human papillomavirus infections have the highest prevalence in this age group. The determinants of risk for STDs in adolescence encompass a range of behavioral, biological, and social factors. This review focuses on the skin signs of STDs in adolescents. Recognition of these findings is important since they may represent the most prominent, earliest, or only

BACKGROUND: Partner notification has been practiced for decades, with substantial resources directed towards it, and with little evidence on whether it has made a public health impact on disease transmission. Most of the evaluations were not randomized controlled trials, and were conducted in the United States, prior to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. There are reasons to question whether partner notification for gonorrhoea and chlamydia is applicable to HIV. It is also questionable whether interventions for the developed world are applicable to the developing world.
OBJECTIVES: This review aims to co

Health care providers who evaluate persons who have or are at risk for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) should be aware of current national guidelines for STD treatment and should provide assessment and treatment according to these recommendations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention STD Treatment Guidelines were developed by using an evidence-based approach incorporating available scientific evidence, specialist knowledge, and consultation with professional organizations and other agencies with diverse perspectives on STD treatment. The guidelines provide recommendations about

Sexually transmitted diseases are a persistent problem in the United States and throughout the world. Many of these infections involve the skin and may be encountered in the field of dermatology. This 3-part review highlights the cutaneous features, diagnosis, and treatment of 11 of the most commonly encountered sexually transmitted diseases, other than AIDS. However, this review does not cover sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia, which do not regularly have cutaneous manifestations. Part 1 focuses on syphilis, disseminated gonococcal infection, chancroid, lymphogranuloma venereum,
