Two prominent emotions in borderline personality disorder (BPD) are shame and anger. Rumination has been demonstrated to occur in response to shame and to escalate anger, and rumination, particularly anger rumination, has been shown to predict BPD symptoms. The present study tested a structural equation model in which shame leads to the features of BPD via increased anger and anger rumination. A sample of 823 undergraduates completed self-report measures of shame, trait-level anger, anger rumination, and BPD features. The hypothesized model of shame to anger and anger rumination to BPD feature

BACKGROUND: Shame experiences have been suggested to be related with psychopathological symptoms and with self-relevant beliefs. Recent studies also suggest that avoidant-focused strategies (e.g., rumination, thought suppression and dissociation) mediate the impact of shame memories and depression symptoms. However, experiential avoidance has been found to mediate the relation between early experience of abuse and psychopathological symptoms. Our goal was to test the mediating effect of experiential avoidance in the relation between both the nature of shame experiences at the hands of caregive

This study explored the relation of shame proneness and guilt proneness to constructive versus destructive responses to anger among 302 children (Grades 4-6), adolescents (Grades 7-11), 176 college students, and 194 adults. Across all ages, shame proneness was clearly related to maladaptive response to anger, including malevolent intentions; direct, indirect, and displaced aggression; self-directed hostility; and negative long-term consequences. In contrast, guilt proneness was associated with constructive means of handling anger, including constructive intentions, corrective action and non-ho

BACKGROUND: A growing body of research has examined the association between child maltreatment and shame. However, findings have varied considerably, precluding the attainment of conclusive results that could inform clinical practice.
OBJECTIVE: The present meta-analysis aimed to quantitatively synthesize the association between child maltreatment and shame, and to examine potential moderating variables.
METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in Web of Science, ScienceDirect, PubMed, Google Scholar, and CNKI. A three-level meta-analysis was performed to synthesize the effect s

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Bowel disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBIs) are a highly stigmatized group of disorders. Although the link between stigma and shame is acknowledged overall, few studies focusing on health-related stigma mention shame, and research on shame in bowel DGBIs is nonexistent. The aim of this study was to examine the implications of shame in bowel DGBIs.
METHODS: Two Swedish population-based samples were included: a bowel DGBIs sample (n = 537) and a matched comparative sample without bowel symptoms (n = 1881). Participants completed an online survey with validated self-repor

BACKGROUND: Incidents of online public shaming can have devastating consequences for those who are shamed, but how those who witness shaming behaviors react is unclear. When considering online public shaming, it is crucial to be aware of the context in which it occurs. Implicit norms that govern these contexts and evoke emotions can influence what is deemed as acceptable behavior when witnessing public shaming. However, previous work has not examined the role that perceived social acceptability of the shaming content and emotional arousal may have in explaining social media behavior after witn

BACKGROUND: Informal borrowing from friends and acquaintances is a common financial practice in contexts where formal credit is limited, yet it carries significant emotional and relational implications.
AIMS: This study investigates how moral emotions, specifically guilt and shame, influence borrowing behavior, repayment decisions, and post-borrowing relationship quality.
METHODS: Drawing on prospect theory and cognitive dissonance theory, we conducted a cross-sectional survey (N = 384) among individuals with past peer-borrowing experiences and used regression model to analyze the data. The

INTRODUCTION: Body shaming (BS) is a growing phenomenon within the school context, especially among adolescents. Recently, it has been described as an unrepeated act in which a person expresses unsolicited, mostly negative comments about an individual's body. The targeted person perceives these comments as negative, offensive or body shame-inducing. Empirical evidence also suggests that body weight is the most common reason that youths are teased and bullied. Indeed, weight stigma, described as bias or discriminatory behaviors, attitudes, feelings, and thinking about individuals, because of th

Online shaming, where people engage in social policing by shaming perceived transgressions via the internet, is a widespread global phenomenon. Despite its negative consequences, scarce research has been conducted and existing knowledge is largely anecdotal. Using a correlational online survey, this mixed-method study firstly assessed whether moral grandstanding, moral disengagement, emotional reactivity, empathy, social vigilantism, online disinhibition, machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy predict participants' (N = 411; aged 15-78) likelihood to engage in online shaming. Two hierar

Over the last few years, gambling has diversified, particularly with the arrival of legislation authorizing online gambling in 2010 in France. Psychology has been very interested in emotional regulation strategies, and more recently and more sparsely in the presence of shame and guilt. Through an observational study (N = 1955) shame, guilt, and emotional regulation were assessed among gamblers. We found that (i) Less guilt is associated with problem gambling, (ii) Shame-proneness is similar regardless of the type of gamblers, (iii) Every facet of emotion regulation indicates less effective str

Theories of development point out that childhood experiences are relevant across the lifespan, and that the parent-child relationship is essential for a child's physical and psychological wellbeing. The aim of this study is to investigate whether parental abandonment influences self-conscious emotions such as guilt and shame. This quasi-experiment included 230 adolescents and teenagers (M = 17.1, SD = 1.82), and data were collected via a self-reported questionnaire administered online. We used the Guilt Inventory, the Experience of Shame Scale, the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, and the Paren

There is an urgent need to generate deeper understandings of how suicidality manifests and evolves during pregnancy and the following year. Several perinatal studies have examined the incidence of suicidal thoughts and behaviours and associated social and obstetric risk factors; however, there is very limited research offering insights into women's experiences of suicidality at this time in their lives. This study aimed to generate a theory to explain how suicidality evolves in the perinatal period. A grounded theory design was used with data generated using anonymous online surveys (119 parti

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) survivors often experience long-lasting shame, which can significantly impede their healing process and overall well-being. This letter to the editor, written by psychiatrist LienChung Wei, discusses the valuable insights gained from the article, "The Legacy of Shame following Childhood Sexual Abuse Disclosures." By better understanding the dynamics of shame and its relationship with CSA, mental health professionals can provide more empathetic and effective care to their patients who have experienced such trauma. The letter emphasizes the importance of creating a s

BACKGROUND: Despite Auditory Verbal Hallucinations (AVHs) having been long associated with mental illness, they represent a common experience also in the non-clinical population, yet do not exhibit distress or need for care. Shame and guilt are emotions related to one's perception of oneself and one's responsibility. As such, they direct our attention to aspects of AVHs that are under-researched and elusive, particularly about the status of voices as others, their social implications and the constitution and conceptualisation of the self.
OBJECTIVES: This paper aims to provide a systematic re

Shame following childhood sexual abuse (CSA) can be intensely painful and destructive to one's sense of self and place in the world. Organised around an internalised core belief of worthlessness, extreme shame presents as a major therapeutic challenge in therapy with many CSA survivors. A range of clinical and empirical literature, alongside recounts of survivors lived experience, shows that shame is an effect of CSA for many survivors. Yet research has rarely focused specifically on survivors' qualitative or lived experiences of shame. This article reports the results of a scoping review of t

OBJECTIVE: Women with histories of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) are at a higher risk for sexual dysfunction, and show a differential response to sex therapy, than women without abuse histories. The factors underlying those differences have yet to be clearly articulated by the literature. This study examined potential mechanisms of action to account for the relationship between CSA and sexual function.
METHOD: Participants were 120 adult women recruited from the local community. Women completed a single laboratory session in which they viewed a short erotic film and completed a battery of ques

Decades of research demonstrate that women frequently avoid the label "rape" when reflecting on nonconsensual sexual experiences. The current study focuses on self-labels to further understand the relationship between assault characteristics, emotion, mental health, and women's labeling of sexual assault. We argue that emotions produced by various assault characteristics are important mechanisms for understanding self-labeling after a sexual assault. We draw from research on rape scripts and cultural discourses of victimhood, survivorhood, and emotion to examine labeling "rape" and self-labeli

Dispositional shame and guilt have been associated with psychopathology and an increasing number of studies have traced this relation back to adolescence. This developmental period is thought to be characterized by maturational changes in emotion regulation, which also play an important role in vulnerability to psychopathology, but little is known about the links between emotion regulation and dispositional shame and guilt. The current study investigated the relations between individual differences in the habitual use of a wide range of emotion regulation strategies and proneness to shame and

Childhood abuse and neglect (CAN) is considered as a risk factor for substance use disorder (SUD). Based on the drinking to cope model, this study investigated the association of two trauma-relevant emotions (shame and sadness) and substance use. Using ecological momentary assessment we compared real-time emotion regulation in situations with high and low intensity of shame and sadness in currently abstinent patients with CAN and lifetime SUD (traumaSUD group), healthy controls with CAN (traumaHC group), and without CAN (nontraumaHC group). Multilevel analysis showed a positive linear relation

PURPOSE: The aim of the current study is to test the validity and reliability of the Shame Questionnaire among traumatized girls in Lusaka, Zambia.
METHODS: The Shame Questionnaire was validated through both classical test and item response theory methods. Internal reliability, criterion validity and construct validity were examined among a sample of 325 female children living in Zambia. Sub-analyses were conducted to examine differences in construct validity among girls who reported sexual abuse and girls who did not.
RESULTS: All girls in the sample were sexually abused, but only 61.5% end
