The effect of joint instability on latency and recruitment order of the shoulder muscles.

Several shoulder dysfunctions are generally characterized as Shoulder Impingement Syndrome (SIS). Specifically, glenohumeral instability (GI) has been viewed as a primary cause of SIS in young individuals, mainly in overhead athletics. Past studies have associated GI with modifications in latency, recruitment order and/or EMG activity. However, it is not clear if pain and/or joint instability can account for these observed changes. The aim of this investigation was to analyze the effect of glenohumeral instability on the latencies and recruitment order of the superficial muscles of the glenohu

A simplified technique for diagnostic and surgical arthroscopy of the shoulder joint in the dog.

A modified technique is presented for surgical and diagnostic arthroscopy of the shoulder joint in the dog. The technique involves access to the joint through two points only; one was created in place of the drainage needle-cannula, which was replaced with a portal, while the second was located more caudally compared with previous techniques. Using a changing guide rod system the two portals are completely interchangeable in order to perform easier arthroscopic surgery either in the cranial or caudal aspect of the joint. The presence of only one portal caudal to the lateral collateral ligament

Shoulder joint replacement for osteoarthrosis in association with thalidomide-induced phocomelia.

The natural history of thalidomide-induced phocomelia has not yet been established since only 35 years have elapsed since the problems associated with this drug became evident. This paper presents what is considered to be the first case of osteoarthrosis in such an individual treated by shoulder joint replacement. Joint arthoplasty is almost certainly going to become an integral part of the life-long rehabilitation process in such affected individuals.

[Arthroscopic therapy of the unstable shoulder joint--acceptance and critical considerations].

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to document and to present the acceptance of arthroscopically performed stabilising procedures of the glenohumeral joint. METHOD: In a nationwide survey of instructors of the association of arthroscopy, members of the arthroscopy group of the german orthopedic society, and orthopedic and trauma surgeons with special interest in joint surgery we evaluated the current treatment modalities for patients with unstable shoulder joints. RESULTS: After an average of 2.09 +/- 1.0 shoulder redislocations surgery is recommended. The Bankart-operation (63.4%) is th

Arthroscopic surgical approaches and intraarticular anatomy of the equine shoulder joint.

Arthroscopic approaches to the scapulohumeral joint were developed in four clinically normal, live horses (5 limbs) to determine their usefulness for evaluation and potential surgical treatment of intraarticular lesions. The articular surface of the entire glenoid, cranial humeral head (medial and lateral) and caudolateral humeral head, as well as the synovial membrane, could be closely examined from an arthroscopic portal cranial to the infraspinatus tendon. The caudomedial humeral head could be examined partially. Cranial and caudal instrument portals allowed good surgical access to the enti

Influence of acromioclavicular joint arthritis on outcomes after reverse total shoulder.

BACKGROUND: Although substantial motion at the acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) occurs during overhead shoulder motion, the influence of ACJ arthritis on postoperative outcomes of patients undergoing reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) is unclear. We assessed the influence of ACJ arthritis, defined by degenerative radiographic changes, and its severity on clinical outcomes after primary rTSA. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of a prospectively collected shoulder arthroplasty database of patients that underwent primary rTSA with a minimum 2-year clinical follow-up. Imaging stud

Injection-induced low-grade infection of the shoulder joint: preliminary results.

BACKGROUND: Purulent arthritis of the shoulder has been widely reported. Low-grade post-operative infections of the shoulder have also been observed. Low-grade infections of the shoulder without prior surgery have not been reported in the literature. The purpose of this study is to present our experience of seven patients with low-grade infections of the shoulder without a history of prior surgery. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed seven patients, mean age of 45 years that originally presented with diffuse shoulder pain, with or without stiffness. None had prior surgery but all had prior i

Shoulder joint kinematics during elevation measured by ultrasound-based measuring system.

In order to analyze shoulder joint movements, the authors use a ZEBRIS CMS-HS ultrasound-based movement analysis system. In essence, the measurement involves the determination of the spatial position of the 16 anatomical points, which are specified on the basis of the coordinates of ultrasound-based triplets positioned on the upper limb, the scapula, and the thorax; their spatial position is measured in the course of motion. Kinematic characteristics of 74 shoulder joints of 50 healthy persons were identified during elevation in the plane of the scapula. Kinematic characteristics of motion wer

[Sports and work capacity after stabilization of recurrent shoulder joint dislocations].

Eighty-one patients (83 shoulder joints) underwent surgical procedures for recurrent shoulder joint dislocations. All patients had an extra-articular osteotomy with subcapital derotation according to Weber's technique. In all, 46% of the patients underwent additional intra-articular reconstructions. After a mean follow-up of 4.6 years, redislocations (6%) were observed only when a singular derotation technique had been used. Complications were minor (2.4%). External rotation of the operated shoulder joints was normal in most patients with a mean of 48.5 degrees. Improvement in sporting activit

Development and Multisite Assessment of a Novel Shoulder Motion Joint Simulator.

Multiple biomechanical shoulder simulators have been described in the literature, with a trend toward increasing complexity to better simulate clinical scenarios. Our objective was to develop an advanced, novel shoulder joint simulator and compare outcomes at two separate institutions, for a typical shoulder joint motion simulation. Identical shoulder simulators were developed & deployed at both institutions. Eight cadaveric upper extremities were tested by simulating actively controlled, arm elevation in the plane of the scapula for two sequential test conditions (intact and nondestructive si

Treatment of shoulder joint luxation with glenoid ostectomy in a miniature donkey.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 13-year-old 128-kg miniature donkey gelding was evaluated for right forelimb lameness of 7 weeks' duration. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Muscular atrophy of the infraspinatus and supraspinatus muscles over the right scapula with a palpable bony prominence over the point of the shoulder was evident. At the walk, the cranial phase of the stride was reduced with adduction of the distal aspect of the limb, dragging of the toe, and lameness (grade, 4/5). Lateral and craniocaudal radiographs of the right shoulder joint revealed lateral luxation of the humerus in relation to the scapula wi

Internal Derangement of the Shoulder Joint in Asymptomatic Professional Baseball Players.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the influence of throwing activity on shoulder morphology and the difference in shoulder morphology on MRI between asymptomatic professional baseball players and volunteers who play baseball as a recreational activity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective case-control study included 68 asymptomatic professional baseball players (32 pitchers, 36 batters) and 30 male volunteers. Morphologic changes in the following shoulder structures were assessed on MRI: rotator cuff, glenoid labrum, humeral head, subacromial-subdeltoid bursa, subcoracoid bursa, long
