Scanning electron microscopic study on pineal vascularization of the common tree shrew (Tupaia glis).

The detailed blood supply including microvascularization of pineal gland in the common tree shrew (Tupaia glis) was investigated using a vascular corrosion cast technique in conjunction with scanning electron microscopy. Adult common tree shrews of both sexes, divided into 3 groups, were injected with red latex, blue vinyl resin, and Batson's No. 17 plastic mixture for the studies of arterial supply, venous drainage, and microvasculature of the pineal gland, respectively. It was found that the pineal gland is a highly vascularized organ. It receives two to four branches from the medial posteri

Cerebellar corticonuclear fibers of the paramedian lobule of tree shrew (Tupaia glis) with comments on zones.

Following a series of lesions in dorsal (DPML) and ventral (VPML) divisions of tree shrew (Tupaia) paramedian lobule (PML), the distribution of degenerated axons within the deep cerebellar nuclei was determined using the Fink and Heimer ('67) method. Damage to PML produced axonal degeneration in lateral (NL), anterior interposed (NIA), and posterior interposed (NIP) cerebellar nuclei. No degenerated fibers could be traced to either the medial cerebellar nucleus or vestibular complex, via juxtarestiform body, from lesions in PML. Corticonuclear fibers to NL, NIA, and NIP from PML cortex are top

Host-pathogen interplay of Orientia tsutsugamushi: pathomolecular epidemiology and phylo-immuno profiling in naturally infected rodents and shrews.

Scrub typhus is a notable zoonosis, yet natural host-associated pathogen prevalence and genotypic diversity remain underexplored. A total of 261 small mammals comprising rodents and shrews captured in Uttar Pradesh, India, were screened for Orientia tsutsugamushi (OT) using nested PCR. The sample included Rattus rattus (n = 28), Rattus norvegicus (n = 42), Rattus tanezumi (n = 42), Bandicota bengalensis (n = 10), Mus musculus (n = 15), and Suncus murinus (n = 124). The overall molecular prevalence was 11.9% (95% CI: 8.2-16.4) with detection rates of 13.1% in rodents and 12.1% in shrews. Preval

Limited bandwidth short-wavelength light produces slowly-developing myopia in tree shrews similar to human juvenile-onset myopia.

During postnatal development, an emmetropization feedback mechanism uses visual cues to modulate the axial growth of eyes so that, with maturation, images of distant objects are in focus on the retina. If the visual cues indicate that the eye has become too long, it generates STOP signals that slow eye elongation. Myopia is a failure of this process where the eye becomes too long. The existing animal models of myopia have been essential in understanding the mechanics of emmetropization but use visual cues that lead to rapidly progressing myopia and don't match the stimuli that lead to human my

Three-dimensional observations of spatial arrangement of hepatic zonation and vein system in mice and house musk shrews.

The three-dimensional (3D) relationship among the hepatic domains and the efferent central and afferent portal veins was investigated by macroscopy, microscopy, and computer-aided 3D reconstruction methods. To clearly distinguish the pericentral domain from the periportal, we used CCl(4)-treated mice and diabetic house musk shrews, which show typical pericentral necrosis and deposition of fat, respectively. The 3D findings obtained were verified against normal control animals using advantages of our unique observations by light and fluorescent microscopy, which made it possible to differentiat

Effects of food restriction and social cues on sexual maturation and growth in male musk shrews (Suncus murinus).

In the first experiment, the effects of food availability on growth and reproduction were assessed by placing male musk shrews on 3 different feeding schedules, i.e. fed ad libitum, fed 50% of the amount eaten by the ad-libitum controls or fed 25% of the amount eaten by the ad-libitum controls. After 25 days, growth and sexual maturation were significantly retarded in both of the food-restricted groups compared to the control group. In the second experiment, the combined effects of food availability and social cues were investigated in juvenile males that were either fed ad libitum (during the

Biya River Virus, a Novel Hantavirus of the Eurasian Water Shrew (Neomys fodiens) in Russia.

Hantaviridae (order Bunyavirales) is a family of negative-sense, single-stranded RNA viruses. To date, several genetically distinct hantaviruses have been found in the same species of shrews and moles. In this report, we describe Biya River virus (BIRV), a novel hantavirus detected in the Eurasian water shrew (Neomys fodiens), the principal host of Boginia virus (BOGV). Genetic analysis of the complete L- and M-genomic segments and partial S-genomic segments showed that BIRV shared a common evolutionary origin with shrew-borne Altai (ALTV) and Lena (LENV) viruses, belonging to the Mobatvirus g

Identification of novel rodent and shrew orthohepeviruses sheds light on hepatitis E virus evolution.

The family Hepeviridae has seen an explosive expansion in its host range in recent years, yet the evolutionary trajectory of this zoonotic pathogen remains largely unknown. The emergence of rat hepatitis E virus (HEV) has introduced a new public health threat due to its potential for zoonotic transmission. This study investigated 2 464 wild small mammals spanning four animal orders, eight families, 21 genera, and 37 species in Yunnan Province, China. Using broadly reactive reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), we systematically screened the presence and prevalence of Orthoh

The Tree Shrew Model of Parkinson Disease: A Cost-Effective Alternative to Nonhuman Primate Models.

The surge in demand for experimental monkeys has led to a rapid increase in their costs. Consequently, there is a growing need for a cost-effective model of Parkinson disease (PD) that exhibits all core clinical and pathologic phenotypes. Evolutionarily, tree shrews (Tupaia belangeri) are closer to primates in comparison with rodents and could be an ideal species for modeling PD. To develop a tree shrew PD model, we used the 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP+), a metabolite derived from 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine, to induce lesions in dopaminergic neurons of the unilateral sub

Tree shrew cytochrome P450 2E1 is a functional enzyme that metabolises chlorzoxazone and p-nitrophenol.

Cytochromes P450 (CYPs or P450s) are important enzymes for drug metabolism. Tree shrews are non-primate animal species used in various fields of biomedical research, including infection (especially hepatitis viruses), depression, and myopia. A recent tree shrew genome analysis indicated that the sequences and the numbers of P450 genes are similar to those of humans; however, P450s have not been adequately identified and analysed in this species. In this study, a novel CYP2E1 was isolated from tree shrew liver and was characterised in comparison with human, dog, and pig CYP2E1. A Novel Tree Shrew Model of Chronic Experimental Autoimmune Uveitis and Its Disruptive Application.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have established several animal models for experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU) in rodents without the fovea centralis in the human retina. This study aimed to develop and explore the application of a novel EAU model in tree shrews with a cone-dominated retina resembling the human fovea. METHODS: Tree shrews were clinically and pathologically evaluated for the development and characteristics of EAU immunized with six inter-photoreceptor retinoid-binding proteins (IRBPs). IRBP-specific T-cell proliferation and serum cytokine of tree shrews were evaluated to determ

A study of Epstein-Barr virus infection in the Chinese tree shrew(Tupaia belangeri chinensis).

BACKGROUND: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is closely associated with many human diseases, including a variety of deadly human malignant tumours. However, due to the lack of ideal animal models, the biological characteristics of EBV, particularly its function in tumourigenesis, have not been determined. Chinese tree shrews (Tupaia belangeri chinensis), which are similar to primates, have been used to establish a variety of animal models and have recently received much attention. Here, we established tree shrews as a model for EBV infection by intravenous injection. METHODS: Ten tree shrews were inoc

Role of thermal physiology and bioenergetics on adaptation in tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri): the experiment test.

Ambient conditions, as temperature and photoperiod, play a key role in animals' physiology and behaviors. To test the hypothesis that the maximum thermal physiological and bioenergetics tolerances are induced by extreme environments in Tupaia belangeri. We integrated the acclimatized and acclimated data in several physiological, hormonal, and biochemical markers of thermogenic capacity and bioenergetics in T. belangeri. Results showed that T. belangeri increased body mass, thermogenesis capacity, protein contents and cytochrome c oxidase (COX) activity of liver and brown adipose tissue in wint

Effects of photoperiod and social variables on reproduction and growth in the male musk shrew (Suncus murinus).

In Exp. 1, the time course for the photoperiodic response in juvenile male musk shrews was examined by exposing animals to short (10L:14D) or long (14L:10D or 18L:6D) daylengths for 10, 20, 40 or 56 days. When compared with the response of animals maintained in long days, those exposed to short days showed an inhibition of reproductive maturation by 40 days of treatment. In Exp. 2, the combined effects of photoperiod and social cues were investigated in juvenile males that were either housed in short days (with or without a female) or in long days (with or without a female) for 40 days. The XYY condition in a wild mammal: an XY/XYY mosaic common shrew (Sorex araneus).

XY/XYY sex-chromosome mosaicism was demonstrated in both bone marrow and germ cells of a wild adult common shrew. Secondary sexual characteristics were those of a normal male, but the testes were small, and the sperm count was only about 3% of normal. Most of the seminiferous tubule cross-sections examined revealed serious spermatogenic impairment and a reduced diameter. A range of sex-chromosome pairing configurations was observed in XYY primary spermatocytes, including configurations involving the X and both Y chromosomes in a linear or radial array. The chorioallantoic placenta of the golden-rumped elephant shrew, Rhynchocyon chrysopygus has been studied. The implantation is eccentric and mesometrial. The placenta is haemochorial and is divisible into 4 zones namely columnar, proliferative, spongy and basal trophoblastic zones. The proliferative zone, which is peculiar to the Macroscelididae, is present in the early and mid pregnancy but disappears in later stages. The presence of the basal trophoblastic zone, the absence of a true zone of degeneration, the absence of the "mesoplacentarium" (of Starck 1949) and the structure of the wall o
