Submandibular gland with multiple ducts.

A morphological peculiarity was observed in the form of a submandibular gland having three ducts. These ducts opened separately into the oral cavity. Only the upper and the largest of these three ducts was in the usual position and had the expected relation to the lingual nerve. Such a condition is to be kept in mind by a surgeon or a radiologist performing sialography. Unless each of the duct in instilled he may miss pathological findings.

Zygomatic salivary mucoceles in the dog.

Zygomatic salivary mucoceles were diagnosed in 2 dogs. Ophthalmologic signs differed in both cases and reflected the position of the mucocele in relation to the orbit. Cytology of aspirated material and sialography were performed in both cases, but his enabled confirmation of the diagnosis in only one. Surgical excision of the zygomatic salivary gland, with drainage of the mucocele, was curative in both cases. Both dogs had a history of trauma to the head.

Xeroradiography in relation to a Stafne bone cavity.

A symptomless radiolucency was noted to be lying between the inferior dental canal and the lower border of the left side of the mandible. Sialography of the left submandibular gland showed the existence of salivary gland tissue in relation to this radiolucency. However, xeroradiography revealed that this radiolucency was formed by an infolding of the lower border of the mandibular cortex, thus supporting the hypothesis that a Stafne bone cavity arises from the incorporation of salivary tissue into the developing mandibular cortical bone.

How reliable is sonography in the assessment of sialolithiasis?

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the value of sonography for the diagnosis of salivary gland calculi. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In this study, 82 salivary glands in 79 consecutively registered patients with acute or recurrent parotid or submandibular gland swelling were examined with 7.5-12 MHz linear probes. All sonographic examinations were performed by two experienced radiologists without knowledge of the final diagnosis. The reference standard was digital sialography and sialendoscopy with or without surgery for 54 salivary glands and digital sialography alone for 28 glan

Textural Analysis of Magnetic Resonance Images as an Additional Evaluation Tool of Parotid Glands in Sjögren-Primarily Findings.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) plays a leading role in diagnosing soft tissue pathologies, especially in the head and neck. It is increasingly popular for evaluating salivary gland issues like neoplasms and Sjogren's Syndrome. Advanced MRI methods, including MRI sialography and texture analysis, offer non-invasive alternatives, enhancing MRI's role. This study focused on the relationship between the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and T2-weighted MRI sialography and texture analysis (TA) of parotid glands in children with and without Sjogren's Syndrome (SS). Using 3.0 Tesla MRI with DWI

[The etiology of sialolithiasis].

The authors have revealed dilatation of the excretory ducts of salivary glands involved in sialolithiasis and of other salivary glands in a patient. A hypothesis on the primary etiological role of ductal ectasia in the development of sialolithiasis in case some other additional factors are present is put forward. The authors recommend resorting to computer-aided tomography and functional digital subtraction sialography of the salivary glands for the diagnosis of sialolithiasis and discuss the advantages of these methods in comparison with other ones.

[Ultrasonic diagnosis of the salivary glands].

Sonography of the salivary glands is a valuable diagnostic tool in acute and chronic sialadenitis, sialadenoses, lymphadenopathies and tumours lesions. A new examination technique is presented: ultrasound-guided fine needle biopsy. We report on our experience in 308 patients with parotid and in 47 patients with submaxillary gland diseases examined between 1982 and 1987. The diagnostic accuracy and limitations of sonography are discussed compared with sialography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.

The management of sialolithiasis in 2 children through use of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy.

The management of salivary calculi in children may prove difficult for a number of reasons. Traditional investigations require ionizing radiation and in cases of sialography may be poorly tolerated. Similarly, any surgical treatment is likely to require general anesthesia and, in a number of cases, removal of the affected gland, which is associated with attendant risks. As an alternative, ultrasound and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy therapy offers low morbidity and outpatient procedures that are well tolerated, as illustrated by these 2 cases.

Juvenile recurrent parotitis: Review and proposed management algorithm.

INTRODUCTION: Despite being the second most common salivary disease in childhood, the aetiology and appropriate management of juvenile recurrent parotitis (JRP) remains uncertain. Consequently patients may be misdiagnosed, or even undergo indeterminate or potentially invasive procedures without benefit. This article reviews the current understanding of the epidemiology and pathophysiology of JRP, and to appraise the management options available. METHODS AND RESULTS: Medline and Google Scholar databases were searched and peer reviewed journal articles assessed. The epidemiology of JRP remains

Diagnosis and treatment of strictures and kinks in salivary gland ducts.

PURPOSE: This article describes the use of sialoendoscopy for diagnosis and treatment of strictures and kinks in the major salivary glands ducts. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-four salivary glands with obstruction were diagnosed as having ductal kinks or strictures. Strictures were diagnosed by sialography and sialoendoscopy, kinks were diagnosed mainly by sialography, whereas endoscopy was used to rule out other pathology and to locate the kink. There were strictures in 25 salivary glands (14 male and 11 females; aged 25 to 60 years), 14 in the parotid and 11 in the submandibular gland, and k

Pediatric sialolithiasis.

Pediatric sialolithiasis is a rare condition. This article characterizes 15 cases in children between 5 and 14 years of age. The diagnoses of this condition were made with routine radiograph and ultrasound, as well as with sialography whenever possible. Sialoendoscopy was performed as a diagnostic and treatment modality. Thirteen of the 15 affected children were boys, and 12 of 15 cases occurred in the submandibular gland. We were able to diagnose 67% by our imaging methods; the remainder were diagnosed by clinical examination.

[Sonography in salivary calculi--indications and status].

In 23 patients with sialolithiasis the value of real time sonography was investigated. The calculi were correctly diagnosed in 91% of the patients. 3 of 4 calculi could be localized in the main duct of the salivary gland. Because of the high accuracy and the possibility to detect non opaque stones, sonography should be performed, if on plain film the localisation of the calculi is questionable, before sialography is done. In sonolithotrypsy, sonography can be used to document the extraglandular localisation of intraductal calculi.
