Siblings Dealing with Pediatric Cancer: A Family- and Context-oriented Approach.

Background: Pediatric cancer is a severe life-threatening disease that poses significant challenges to the life of the siblings. Based on the social ecology model, the current study is aimed at exploring the association between intrafamilial (family functioning, family support) and contextual (network support) resources, and the individual adjustment of siblings facing cancer in their brother/sister. Methods: Participants were 81 siblings of children with leukemia or non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The mean siblings' age was 10.32 years. Siblings completed the Family Environment Scale, the Social Suppor

Confronting the gender myth: an exploration of variance in male versus female experience with sibling abuse.

Research on family violence has overwhelmingly focused on a patriarchal model, which inaccurately depicts men as exclusively perpetrators and women as exclusively victims of abusive family acts. In addition, empirical research on sibling abuse in families has been significantly absent from the professional literature. This exploratory study used a survey instrument based on an altered version of the Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS) to investigate the question of whether significant gender differences exist in the experience of sibling abuse as a child, either as perpetrator or victim. MANOVAs (mul

Relational Patterns of Support and Communication in Families with a Child Diagnosed with Autism: an Interpretive Phenomenological Study.

BACKGROUND: The impact of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be far-reaching for families. Research has shown that neurotypical (NT) siblings can experience negative and positive implications of ASD in their lives. However, researchers have not fully captured the factors associated with successful adaptation to the range of experiences, particularly regarding NT siblings and the relational support from and communication with their parents. METHODS: We utilized an interpretive phenomenological analysis to illuminate and better understand NT siblings' experiences of parental support and communi

The Combination of Sibling Victimization and Parental Child Maltreatment on Mental Health Problems and Delinquency.

This study examined how the combination of sibling victimization and parental child maltreatment is related to mental health problems and delinquency in childhood and adolescence. Co-occurrence, additive associations, and interactive associations of sibling victimization and parental child maltreatment were investigated using a sample of 2,053 children aged 5-17 years from the National Survey of Children's Exposure to Violence. The results provide primarily evidence for additive associations and only suggest some co-occurrence and interactive associations of sibling victimization and child mal

Sibling relationships as a mediator and a moderator between parental attachment and depression among adolescents.

Depression threatens adolescents' psychological health and is influenced by negative interpersonal relationships. Previous studies have explored the effect of a negative parent-child relationship on adolescent depression but have ignored the frequent coexistence of these relationships with other family relationships, for example, sibling relationships. This study examined how parent-child and sibling relationships co-impact adolescent depression, by testing the mediating and moderating roles of sibling relationships between parental attachment and adolescent depression. A sample of 5,896 adole

Living in the shadows: Correlational analysis of behavioral trajectories and quality of life among siblings of children with neurodevelopmental disorders.

BACKGROUND: Siblings of children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) often experience emotional neglect, caregiving burdens, and psychosocial stress, which compromise their quality of life (QoL) and increase vulnerability to long-term psychological strain. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between behavioral trajectories and quality of life among siblings of children with neurodevelopmental disorders. METHODS: A descriptive correlational study design was employed with 200 parents of children diagnosis with NDDs and at least one sibling was recruited from pediatric hospitals. Data w

Sibling Bereavement Among Young Indian Adults.

This qualitative study explores the bereavement experiences of 12 surviving siblings in India, focusing on familial, societal, and cultural influences. Six themes emerged: "The Demanding Familial Role," "Isolation That Accompanies the Grief," "Damaging Impact of Society," "Positive Role of Friends and Family," "Support Systems," and "Continuing Bonds." Participants often felt the burden of supporting their parents, leading to personal grief suppression and isolation, exacerbated by societal stigmas. Conversely, empathetic friends, supportive extended family, and professional resources like the

The Psychosocial Impact of Cleft Lip and/or Palate on Unaffected Siblings.

BACKGROUND: Sibling relationships are among the most unique social connections, significantly affecting psychosocial adjustment. Previous reviews in the fields of chronic illness and disability have concluded that unaffected siblings of children with long-term conditions are at risk of poorer psychological functioning as a consequence. Much research has investigated the psychosocial impact of CL/P on affected individuals and their parents, yet comparatively little is known about the impact on other close family members. OBJECTIVE: To gain a better understanding of the experience of unaffected

"That's my brother": Perceptions of future involvement among Latino and non-Latino youth siblings of autistic individuals.

PURPOSE: Throughout their youth, non-autistic siblings of autistic individuals may begin considering their involvement in their autistic sibling's life, which may affect their well-being. However, there is little research on how expectations for future involvement differ across cultures. Understanding why and how youth siblings' expectations manifest may inform the design of family interventions that are appropriate for culturally-diverse samples. The present analysis examines how Latino and non-Latino youth siblings perceive their future supportive roles in their autistic sibling's life. MET

The Impact of First-Episode Psychosis on the Sibling Relationship.

OBJECTIVE: Research and clinical practice in first-episode psychosis (FEP) has predominantly focused on parents and partners and has neglected siblings needs. This study aims to characterize the sibling relationship in FEP and to examine the illness-related variables that influence this relationship. METHOD: Survey methodology explored the experience of 157 siblings during the first 18 months of their brother or sister's treatment. The Adult Sibling Relationship Questionnaire was used to measure the warmth, conflict, and rivalry within the relationship. A series of multivariate regression ana

Experiences of offspring searching for and contacting their donor siblings and donor.

This study investigates a new phenomenon whereby individuals conceived by donor insemination are searching for and contacting their donor and/or 'donor siblings' (i.e. donor offspring conceived by the same donor who are their genetic half siblings). On-line questionnaires were completed by members of the Donor Sibling Registry (DSR), a US-based registry that facilitates contact between donor conception families who share the same donor. Of the 165 donor offspring who completed the survey, 15% were searching for their donor siblings, 13% were searching for their donor, and 64% were searching fo

The risks for late adolescence of early adolescent marijuana use.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to assess the relation of early adolescent marijuana use to late adolescent problem behaviors, drug-related attitudes, drug problems, and sibling and peer problem behavior. METHODS: African American (n = 627) and Puerto Rican (n = 555) youths completed questionnaires in their classrooms initially and were individually interviewed 5 years later. Logistic regression analysis estimated increases in the risk of behaviors or attitudes in late adolescence associated with more frequent marijuana use in early adolescence. RESULTS: Early adolescent marijuana

Using the Infant Sibling-Design to Explore Associations Between Autism and ADHD Traits in Probands and Temperament in the Younger Siblings.

The purpose of the current study was to use the infant sibling design to explore whether proband traits of autism and ADHD could provide information about their infant sibling's temperament. This could help us to gain information about the extent to which infant temperament traits are differentially associated with autism and ADHD traits. We used parent-ratings of autistic traits and ADHD traits (CRS-3) in older siblings diagnosed with autism (age range 4 to 19 years), and their infant siblings' temperament traits (IBQ) at 9 months of age in 216 sibling pairs from two sites (BASIS, UK, and EAS

Siblings of children with type 1 diabetes mellitus: Psychosocial health, coping.

PURPOSE: The literature widely reported the psychosocial toll of Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) on patients, though the family functioning of T1DM patients, particularly siblings, has traditionally obtained far less consideration. This study was framed to investigate the psychosocial adjustments of siblings of children with T1DM and to evaluate the frequencies and the perceived efficacy of coping strategies adopted by siblings. DESIGN AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included parents (n = 100) and siblings (n = 100) of children with T1DM. Parents completed the following questionnaires

Sibling relationships in families with congenitally impaired children.

Sibling relationships between school-aged children and their chronically impaired siblings have been studied infrequently. In this exploratory, descriptive study, 67 children (7 to 12 years old) and their mothers provided data about well-impaired sibling relationships. Three groups participated: 22 siblings and mothers of children with craniofacial anomalies, 20 siblings and mothers of children with cardiac anomalies, and 25 siblings and mothers of healthy children. Data were collected using the Sibling Inventory of Behavior and semistructured sibling and maternal interview guides. Quantitativ

Five-factor personality measures in Chinese university students: effects of one-child policy?

Since the one-child policy was implemented in China in 1979, many investigators have studied the psychological consequences to children without siblings. Although the results are not conclusive, there is evidence that children who have siblings, rather than only children, have increased anxiety and depression. Whether the differences between students with and without siblings would continue when they reached university age is an interesting question. We used the Zuckerman-Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire to assess personality traits and the Plutchik-van Praag Depression Inventory to measure d
