Effects of Cotton Stalk and Sugar Beet Pulp Silage on Growth Performance, Serum Biochemistry, Rumen Fermentation, and Microbiota in Suffolk Ram Lambs.

This study evaluated the effects of replacing whole-plant corn silage with cotton stalk and sugar beet pulp mixed silage at 0, 30, 60, or 90% on growth performance, serum parameters, and rumen characteristics in Suffolk ram lambs, addressing the lack of systematic research on moderate-to-high replacement ratios in sheep diets. Eighty-four 4-month-old ram lambs (32.36 ± 2.92 kg) were assigned to four treatments (3 pens/treatment, 7 lambs/pen) for a 120-day trial after a 15-day adaptation. Based on the growth performance and serum parameter results, the control and 60% replacement groups were se

Effects of anthocyanin-rich Napier grass silage on feed intake, milk production, plasma profile, and nutritional digestibility in lactating crossbred Saanen goats.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Anthocyanins are potent antioxidants and scavengers of free radicals found in fruits, purple corn, and other naturally occurring purple plants. Several studies have demonstrated that anthocyanins possess strong antioxidant properties and can enhance ruminant production by modulating intracellular oxidative stress and modifying ruminal fermentation. This study aimed to examine the effects of anthocyanin-rich Napier grass silage (ANS) on feed intake, nutrient digestibility, milk production, plasma profile, and antioxidant capacity in lactating crossbred Saanen goats. Enhanced lignin degradation by Irpex lacteus through expanded sterilization further improved the fermentation quality and microbial community during the silage preservation process.

Traditional autoclaving, slow degradation rate and preservation of biomass treated by fungi are the main factors restricting biological treatment. In our previous studies, strains with high efficiency and selective lignin degradation ability were obtained. To further solve the limiting factors of biological treatment, this paper proposed a composite treatment technology, which could replace autoclaves for fungal treatment and improve the preservation and utilization of fungal-pretreated straw. The autoclaved and expanded buckwheat straw were, respectively, degraded by Irpex lacteus for 14 days

Dietary silaged Broussonetia papyrifera improves laying performance and intestinal health by modulating gut microbiota and metabolic pathways in aged laying hens.

Broussonetia papyrifera (BP) contains various bioactive compounds that may benefit animals when silaged. Intestinal problems, such as inflammation, barrier impairment, and microbial dysbiosis in aged laying hens, in aged laying hens induce an decrease in egg production This study examined the effects of dietary silaged Broussonetia papyrifera (SBP) on production and intestinal health. A total of 240 Hy-Line Brown laying hens (65 weeks old, similar laying rates and body weights) were allocated to two groups (8 replicates of 15 hens each): a control group fed a basal diet and an SBP group fed th

Processed fava bean as a substitute for rapeseed meal with or without rumen-protected methionine supplement in grass silage-based dairy cow diets.

Fava bean offers a sustainable home-grown protein source for dairy cows, but fava bean protein is extensively degraded in the rumen and has low Met concentration. We studied the effects of protein supplementation and source on milk production, rumen fermentation, N use, and mammary AA utilization. The treatments were unsupplemented control diet, and isonitrogenously given rapeseed meal (RSM), processed (dehulled, flaked, and heated) fava bean without (TFB) or with rumen-protected (RP) Met (TFB+). All diets consisted of 50% grass silage and 50% cereal-based concentrate including studied protein

Effects of GABA-enriched alfalfa silage on rumen microbiota, lactation hormones, immunity, and mammary gland gene expression, alongside lactation performance in dairy goats.

BACKGROUND: Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) influences metabolic homeostasis, immune function, and lactation performance. Typically, GABA is administered exogenously, but this approach is limited by intake variability and cost. Alternatively, silage inoculated with high GABA-producing Lentilactobacillus buchneri YM9 enriches the silage with GABA and ensures more uniform dietary delivery. However, the effects of silage-based GABA enrichment and delivery on ruminant performance, immunity, and health remain unclear. Hence, we conducted a feeding trial with 36 dairy goats assigned to three TMR trea

Agronomic Response of Silage Maize to Varying Irrigation Water and Nitrogen Levels Under Subsurface Drip Irrigation: Implications for Yield and Water Use Productivity.

Excessive or poorly timed nitrogen (N) fertilization can increase nitrate leaching and associated environmental risks. This two-year field study evaluated the combined effects of three irrigation regimes and four N rates on the biomass yield, water productivity, and economic performance of silage maize under subsurface drip irrigation (SDI). The irrigation treatments were full irrigation (I1), 50% of I1 (deficit irrigation, I2), and 120% of I1 (excess irrigation, I3); the N treatments were 0 (N0), 140 (N1), 210 (N2), and 280 kg N ha-1 (N3). The experiment was established in a randomized comple

Mixed silage with Chinese cabbage waste enhances antioxidant ability by increasing ascorbate and aldarate metabolism through rumen Prevotellaceae UCG-004 in Hu sheep.

Silage is rich in nutrients, which can make up for the lack of seasonal roughage, and has a certain promotion effect on the intensive feeding of ruminants. In addition, silage can maintain the rumen function of ruminants to a certain extent and reduce the risk of rumen acidosis and abomasum translocation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the mixed silage of Chinese cabbage waste and rice straw (mixed silage) on antioxidant performance, rumen microbial population, and fermentation metabolism of Hu sheep. The 16 healthy Hu sheep (eight rams and eight ewes, 39.11 ± 1.16

Effects of replacing barley grain with corn grain on performance, rumen and blood parameters in dairy cows fed alfalfa hay or corn silage.

Different grain sources in the diet have shown varying effects on performance of dairy cows. Also, the variability in response to different starch sources is influenced by the type of forage used. This study investigates the combined effects of two forage (alfalfa hay vs. corn silage) and grain (barley vs. corn) sources on dry matter intake (DMI), feed efficiency, milk production and composition, apparent nutrient digestibility, blood metabolites, and ruminal metabolism of dairy cows. Eight second-parity early lactation Holstein cows (63 ± 5 d in milk) were used in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin squ

Influence of the concentrate inclusion level in a grass silage-based diet on hepatic transcriptomic profiles in Holstein-Friesian dairy cows in early lactation.

Excessive negative energy balance in early lactation is linked to an increased disease risk but may be mitigated by appropriate nutrition. The liver plays central roles in both metabolism and immunity. Hepatic transcriptomic profiles were compared between 3 dietary groups in each of 40 multiparous and 18 primiparous Holstein-Friesian cows offered isonitrogenous grass silage-based diets with different proportions of concentrates: (1) low concentrate (LC, 30% concentrate + 70% grass silage); (2) medium concentrate (MC, 50% concentrate + 50% grass silage), or (3) high concentrate (HC, 70% concent

The association of maize silage with urea: the effect on the ammonia content of the rumen fluid, the N flow in the duodenum, the nitrogen and energy balances and the milk production.

In different experiments, the nutritive value of maize silage associated with urea was compared with that of the same forage without any N supplement. The ammonia concentration in the rumen liquor was measured with two dry cows fitted with a permanent rumen cannula. Urea was rapidly hydrolysed in the rumen and gave rise to high ammonia concentrations. The control diet did not supply enough fermentable nitrogen to the ruminal flora. The duodenal N flow was measured with two dry cows fitted with a re-entrant cannula at 10 cm from the pylorus. When increasing amounts of urea were fed, the duodena

Effects of condensed tannin-amended cassava silage blend diets on feeding behavior, digestibility, nitrogen balance, milk yield and milk composition in dairy goats.

Condensed tannins (CTs) are phenolic compounds derived from secondary plant metabolism that act as part of the plant's chemical defense system against pathogen invasion and herbivorous attack. This study aimed to evaluate the intake, digestibility, nitrogen (N) balance, production and composition of milk from goats fed cassava silage with added levels of CTs. Eight Anglo-Nubian goats with a mean BW of 40 ± 2.0 kg were distributed in a double Latin square design with four levels of CTs (0, 25, 50 and 75 g/kg DM) with four 20-day periods with 15 days of adaptation and five evaluation days for ea
