A Copper(I)-Catalyzed Sulfonylative Hiyama Cross-Coupling.

An air-tolerant Cu-catalyzed sulfonylative Hiyama cross-coupling reaction enabling the formation of diaryl sulfones is described. Starting from aryl silanes, DABSO and aryliodides, the reaction tolerates a large variety of polar functional groups (amines, ketones, esters, aldehydes). Control experiments coupled with DFT calculations shed light on the mechanism, characterized by the formation of a Cu(I)-sulfinate intermediate via fast insertion of a SO2 molecule.

Development of Methods for Specific Capture of Biological Targets on Aluminum Substrates: Application to Bacillus subtilis Spore Detection as a Model for Anthrax.

Many (if not most) biosensors rely on functional silane coatings as a first step toward covalent immobilization of specific capture molecules. While methods for silanization of silica (SiO2) surfaces are very well developed, less has been done to develop and characterize silanization methods for alternative substrates, such as alumina (Al2O3). In particular, the behavior of Al2O3 coatings grown on aluminum under ambient conditions has not been studied. To address this issue, we have tested solution-phase deposition of two silanes on Al2O3 (3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane and 3-triethoxysilyl)pro

Thermostable water reservoirs in the interlayer space of a sodium hectorite clay through the intercalation of γ-aminopropyl(dimethyl)ethoxysilane in toluene.

Treatment of Na+-based hectorite LAPONITE® (LAP) and of Na+-montmorillonite (MMT) with a homologous series of γ-aminopropyl(methyl)x(ethoxy)ysilanes (x + y = 3, y > 0) in toluene was studied by means of thermogravimetric analysis coupled with mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy, 29Si and 23Na solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction. The triethoxy silane (APTS) exclusively grafts on the clays' edges as branched oligomers whereas both the monoethoxy silane (APMS) and the diethoxy silane (APDS) are also intercalated, the latter as linear oligomers. Geminal Difunctionalizations of Aliphatic Ketones and Aldehydes Enabled by Thioacetal Activation and Deep Electroreduction.

In this work, we identify dithioacetals as synthetically accessible, redox-active, and traceless activating groups that enable the electroreductive transformation of aliphatic ketones and aldehydes. This strategy effectively converts these carbonyl compounds into dianion equivalents to undergo deoxygenative gem-difunctionalization with various electrophiles. Faradaic control was achieved over reaction chemoselectivity, allowing for the combinatorial construction of densely functionalized silanes, boronates, and germanes.

Photocatalytic reductive incorporation of carbon dioxide into double bonds.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a challenging molecule to incorporate into olefins due to its inherent inert properties. Silanes have now been shown to rapidly react selectively with CO2, catalysed by the presence of a caesium base, to form formate salts which can undergo a hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) to give the desired CO2˙- adducts in the presence of activated olefins.

Cellular association and assembly of a multistage delivery system.

The realization that blood-borne delivery systems must overcome a multiplicity of biological barriers has led to the fabrication of a multistage delivery system (MDS) designed to temporally release successive stages of particles or agents to conquer sequential barriers, with the goal of enhancing delivery of therapeutic and diagnostic agents to the target site. In its simplest form, the MDS comprises stage-one porous silicon microparticles that function as carriers of second-stage nanoparticles. Cellular uptake of nontargeted discoidal silicon microparticles by macrophages is confirmed by elec

Fluoride-promoted cross-coupling of chloro(mono-, di-, or triphenyl)germanes with aryl halides in "moist" toluene. Multiple transfer of the phenyl group from organogermane substrates and comparison of the coupling efficiencies of chloro(phenyl)germanes with their corresponding stannane and silane counterparts.

The trichlorophenyl-, dichlorodiphenyl-, and chlorotriphenylgermanes undergo Pd-catalyzed cross-couplings with aryl bromides and iodides in the presence of tetrabutylammonium fluoride in toluene with addition of the measured amount of water. One chloride ligand on the Ge center allows efficient activation by fluoride to promote transfer of one, two, or three phenyl groups from the organogermanes. The corresponding chlorophenylstannanes were found to be more reactive than chlorophenylsilanes, which in turn were more effective than chlorophenylgermanes. One chloride ligand on the Ge or Si center

An efficient substitution reaction for the preparation of thyroid hormone analogues.

The substitution of the sterically hindered carbon of the potent thyroid hormone agonist, GC-1, was effected by a reaction based on the solvolysis of the benzylic hydroxyl group. The reaction was found to proceed in high yield with a variety of nucleophiles including alcohols, thiols, allyl silanes and electron-rich aromatic compounds, providing a convenient route to the synthesis of new thyroid hormone analogues.

Immobilization strategies of Brucella particles on optical fibers for use in chemiluminescence immunosensors.

Immunosensors are powerful analytical tools in clinical and veterinary diagnostics. This has led us to design a chemiluminescent immunosensor aimed at identifying anti-Brucella antibodies using optical fibers as the transducer. In order to develop the optimal transducer, to achieve an optimal chemical modification thereby allowing an optimal covalent binding of the protein receptor, several cleaning strategies and silane coupling agents were investigated. Brucella killed organisms were used as a model receptor for quantifying anti-Brucella IgG antibodies in a suspension compared to conventiona

FLP-CO2 adducts: convenient sources of frustrated Lewis pairs for stoichiometric and catalytic chemistry.

The compounds [tBu3PCO2B(C6F5)3] 1 and [TMPH][C5H6Me4NCO2B(C6F5)3] 7 are easily handled synthons releasing CO2 on warming generating the corresponding FLPs which can activate H2, disulfides, alkynes, silanes and phenols. Compound 7 was also shown to be an effective FLP catalyst precursor for the hydrogenation and hydrosilylation of imines, electron deficient olefins, and ketones while less effective for electron-rich olefins. The advantages and limitations of this approach are considered.

Functional Nanocomposites in the Development of Flexible Armor.

The idea of flexible body armor has been around for many years. Initial development included shear thickening fluid (STF) as a backbone polymer to impregnate ballistic fibers such as Kevlar. At the core of the ballistic and spike resistance was the instantaneous rise in viscosity of STF during impact. Increase in viscosity was due to the hydroclustering of silica nanoparticles dispersed in polyethylene glycol (PEG) through a centrifuge and evaporation process. When STF composite was dry, hydroclustering was not possible due to absence of any fluidity in PEG. However, particles embedded within

P(V)-bis(amidophenolate) ligand cooperation: stoichiometric CO-bond cleavage in aldehydes and ketones.

The cooperation between a geometrically constrained, highly electrophilic phosphorus(V) center, and an electronically rich tetradentate bis(amidophenolate) ligand enables the cleavage of the CO bond from typical aldehydes and ketones delivering iminio phosphoramidate species. The amphiphilic nature of these products, which is demonstrated through their reaction with typical Lewis acids and bases, enables their use as a mild source of silylium cations from silanes, allowing the selective reductive coupling of aldehydes to ethers under catalytic conditions.

Monolayers of an organosilane on magnetite nanoparticles for the fast removal of Cr(VI) from water.

Monolayers of N-(2-aminoethyl)-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane have been established on magnetite nanoparticles to develop a novel magnetic adsorbent for fast decontamination of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from water. Results indicated that monolayer adsorption of the silane from water took place at low concentrations (<300 mg/L) and around 100% surface coverage was obtained at temperatures ≥90°C. The hydrolysed silane was anchored to the magnetite surface through condensation reactions between its silanol groups and the surface hydroxyl groups of magnetite. The functional amine groups were pro

B(C6F5)3-Catalyzed, Metal-Free Reduction of Diselenides and Ditellurides, and One-Pot Syntheses of O,Se-Acetals, Selenoesters, Selanylketones, and Telluroesters.

Silyl selenides and tellurides were successfully synthesized by respectively reacting diselenides or ditellurides with silanes under catalysis of B(C6F5)3 at rt. Without workup, these were reacted with a variety of aldehydes, carboxylic acid derivatives, and α,β-unsaturated ketones under nucleophilic catalysis generating O,Se-acetals, seleno- and telluroesters, and selanylketones in good to excellent yields, respectively. A triethylsilyl O,Se-acetal was utilized in a three-component radical reaction.

The effect of ruthenium oxidation on the decomposition of SiH4.

In chemical vapor deposition, the interaction of the precursor molecule with the substrate can crucially influence the deposition process and provide pathways to tailor the growth. Here, we report mechanistic differences of Si growth from silane (SiH4) at pristine and oxidized surfaces of Ru(0001) in a combined in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) study. Silane decomposition is essentially barrierless and thus very efficient on Ru(0001), where it saturates at approximately a monolayer of silicon. Similarly, silane readily decomposes on a thin inter

Generation of Zerovalent Metal Core Nanoparticles Using n-(2-aminoethyl)-3-aminosilanetriol.

In this work, a facile one-pot reaction for the formation of metal nanoparticles in a water solution through the use of n-(2-aminoethyl)-3-aminosilanetriol is presented. This compound can be used to effectively reduce and complex metal salts into metal core nanoparticles coated with the compound. By controlling the concentrations of salt and silane one is able to control reaction rates, particle size, and nanoparticle coating. The effects of these changes were characterized through transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-Vis spectrometry (UV-Vis), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy (NM

Antifouling Modification of Gold Surfaces for Acoustic Wave Sensor Applications.

This study aims to develop a robust and reproducible method for fabricating efficient ultrathin antifouling coatings on gold surfaces by leveraging hydroxylation-based surface modifications. An ultrathin antifouling coating of a monoethylene glycol silane derivative, known to reduce fouling by at least 90% on flat hydroxylated surfaces, was successfully replicated on flat gold (reducing fouling by ~75%) by hydroxylating its surface with β-mercaptoethanol. This tandem coating contains the monoethylene glycol silane layer on top of the β-mercaptoethanol on the gold. Characterization was performe

Photocatalytic Perfluoroalkenylation of Ketones and Its Application in the Synthesis of Fluorinated Heterocycles.

A mild and efficient photocatalytic method for the α-perfluoroalkenylation of ketones via the corresponding enol silanes has been developed. Using a commercial ruthenium photocatalyst and DABCO under visible light irradiation, perfluoroenones were obtained in up to 89% yield and excellent Z-selectivity. The protocol is applicable to a broad range of (hetero)aromatic and aliphatic substrates. The resulting perfluoroenones serve as versatile intermediates for the synthesis of perfluorinated heterocycles such as pyrazoles, pyrimidines, or isoxazoles.

Virtual screening as a strategy for the identification of xenobiotics disrupting corticosteroid action.

BACKGROUND: Impaired corticosteroid action caused by genetic and environmental influence, including exposure to hazardous xenobiotics, contributes to the development and progression of metabolic diseases, cardiovascular complications and immune disorders. Novel strategies are thus needed for identifying xenobiotics that interfere with corticosteroid homeostasis. 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 2 (11β-HSD2) and mineralocorticoid receptors (MR) are major regulators of corticosteroid action. 11β-HSD2 converts the active glucocorticoid cortisol to the inactive cortisone and protects MR from activ
