Cementitious materials have potential for infrastructure development in low-temperature marine environments, including in seawater at high latitudes and in deep-sea environments (water depths of >1000 m). Although the marine deterioration of cementitious materials has been widely investigated, the influence of seawater temperature has not been elucidated. In this study, to determine the effects of low-temperature seawater on the durability of cementitious materials, cement paste specimens were immersed in a seawater tank at room temperature and 2 °C for 433 days. The specimen immersed in low-t

The biological compatibility of a silicophosphate cement (Fluoro-Thin) and a zinc phosphate cement (de Trey's Improved) has been assessed in in vitro (cell culture) and in vivo (monkey teeth) tests. In the in vitro tests both materials were toxic when freshly prepared. In experiments with prolonged cell-material contact time, with set specimens of the materials, the zinc phosphate cement appeared to be non-toxic, whereas the silicophosphate cement was clearly toxic. The in vivo experiments confirmed that a possible pulp reaction cauded by zinc phosphate cement is of a mild nature. The silicoph

To enhance the application value of sand washing residue mud (SWRM) and mitigate its adverse environmental impacts, this study focuses on the resource utilization of SWRM. The research employed a combined mechanical-thermal activation method to enhance the activity of SWRM and utilized the mixed optimal design module to design and optimize the mixing ratio of SWRM-based LC3 cement. The results showed that within a ball-milling time range of 3-9 min, as the ball-milling time increased, the specific surface area increased, the median particle size D50 decreased, and the particle size was mainly

Mortars and concretes are ubiquitous materials with very complex hierarchical microstructures. To fully understand their main properties and to decrease their CO2 footprint, a sound description of their spatially resolved mineralogy is necessary. Developing this knowledge is very challenging as about half of the volume of hydrated cement is a nanocrystalline component, calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) gel. Furthermore, other poorly crystalline phases (e.g. iron siliceous hydrogarnet or silica oxide) may coexist, which are even more difficult to characterize. Traditional spatially resolved tech

Flotation waste of copper slag (FWCS), neutralization sludge (NS), and arsenic-containing gypsum sludge (GS), both of which are difficult to dispose of, are major solid wastes produced by the copper smelting. This study focused on the co-treatment of FWCS, NS, and GS for solidification/stabilization of arsenic and heavy metals with minimal cement clinker. Firstly, the preparation parameters of binder composed of FWCS, NS, and cement clinker were optimized to be FWCS dosage of 40%, NS dosage of 10%, cement clinker dosage of 50%, mill time of 1.5 h, and water-to-binder ratio of 0.25. On these co

Dentin remineralization is of clinical relevance in the therapy of caries and dentin hypersensitivity. This study is aimed at gaining more insights on a molecular scale, through IR spectroscopy, into dentin demineralization and remineralization. The dentin demineralization by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, EDTA (17%, 2 h) significantly altered the secondary structure distribution of collagen, upon loss of interaction with calcium ions. To investigate dentin remineralization, previously demineralized human dentin slices were soaked in Dulbecco's Phosphate Buffered Saline (DPBS) or Hank's Bala

Dredged soil and phosphogypsum (PG) are waste materials that must be treated to reduce their negative environmental effects. Guided by the concept of waste treatment, this study proposed the use of PG as a supplementary cementitious material to stabilize waste-dredged soil, and calcium aluminate cement (CAC) was selected to further improve the strength of the cement-treated dredged soil. Several laboratory tests were conducted to investigate the pH, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), and failure strain of the cement-treated soils in different proportions. Microstructural and mineralogical

Vital pulp therapy (VPT) was once a treatment modality that was only considered for immature permanent teeth to allow for the continued development of the radicular system if the pulp was vital. With the advent of bioceramics and bioactive materials such as calcium silicate cements, the applications for VPT have greatly increased, giving dentists a treatment option other than nonsurgical root canal therapy (RCT) for mature teeth previously diagnosed to have an irreversible pulpitis. This approach can serve as a less invasive, simpler procedure than RCT while allowing for the preservation of na

Blood clot formation in the apical third of the root canal system has been shown to promote further root development and reinforcement of dentinal walls by the deposition of mineralized tissue, resulting in an advancement from traditional apexification procedures to a regenerative endodontic treatment (RET) for non-vital immature permanent teeth. Silicate-based hydraulic biomaterials, categorized as bioactive endodontic cements, emerged as bright candidates for their use in RET as coronal barriers, sealing the previously induced blood clot scaffold. Human stem cells from the apical papilla (hS

This clinical report describes the fixed prosthodontic rehabilitation of an infra-occluded primary molar. Diagnostic considerations included the patient's age, occlusal status, condition of the infra-occluded tooth including the degree of infra-occlusion and root resorption, as well as adjacent alveolar bone levels. Due to the patient's young age, an invasive prosthetic approach was delayed in favor of an onlay restoration, which represented a more rapid and conservative therapeutic choice. The treatment involved the design and fabrication of a composite onlay on the deciduous molar using a ce
