Sporogonic development of Leucocytozoon smithi.

The sporogonic development of Leucocytozoon smithi in its black fly vector was studied by light and electron microscopy and was compared with that of other haemosporidians. Within 18 to 24 h after ingestion of gametocytes by black flies, ookinetes passing through the midgut epithelium were observed. Intracellular migration of ookinetes resulted in the apparent disruption and degeneration of host cells. Intercellular migration also occurred as was evidenced by the presence of ookinetes between midgut cells. Transformation of ookinete to spherical oocyst occurred extracellularly in three differe

Seasonal variation in onchocerciasis transmission by Simulium squamosum at perennial breeding sites in Togo.

Analyses of data collected routinely by the World Health Organization Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West Africa showed that the transmission of onchocerciasis by Simulium squamosum at Amou-Oblo, in Togo, was maximal in the dry season. Mean monthly transmission potentials ranged from 10.4 in August to 519.6 in February. Infectivity in terms of numbers of L3 larvae in the head per 1000 parous flies was highest in March. Additional, more detailed, studies involving the staining of flies from Amou-Oblo, Djodji and Tinkiro confirmed these seasonal trends but also revealed significantly higher

Outstanding insecurities concerning the use of an Ov16-based ELISA in the Amazonia onchocerciasis focus.

In a recent issue of Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, published in Rio de Janeiro in February 2014 (109: 87-92), Adami et al. have published a survey reporting Mansonella parasite prevalence in the Amazon Region. This report makes a useful contribution to the existing knowledge of filarial parasite distribution within the Amazon area, parasite prevalence rates in relation to age and occupation and provides observations on the possible clinical impact of Mansonella ozzardi. Their publication also provides an account of what appears to be a novel ELISA that has recently been used in the Simul

An 18S ribosomal DNA barcode for the study of Isomermis lairdi, a parasite of the blackfly Simulium damnosum s.l.

The mermithid parasite, Isomermis lairdi Mondet, Poinar & Bernadou (Nematoda: Mermithidae), is known to have a major impact on populations of Simulium damnosum s.l. Theobald (Diptera: Simuliidae) and on their efficiency as vectors of Onchocerca volvulus (Leuckart) (Nematoda: Filarioidea). However, the value of I. lairdi and other mermithid parasites as potential means of integrated vector control has not been fully realized. This is partly because traditional taxonomic approaches have been insufficient for describing and analysing important aspects of their biology and host range. In total, rD

Ecological assessment of Black Fly (Simuliumdamnosum, Sensulato) breeding sites in two tributaries of Ogun river, Ogun state, Nigeria.

Onchocerciasis is a disease transmitted by blackfly vector of the genus Simuliumdamnosum complex having public and socio-economic consequences. The abundance of blackfly is directly linked to fluvial ecosystems in both tropical and non-tropical countries of the world. This study assessed the ecology of blackfly breeding sites in two tributaries of River Ogun located in Olokemeji and Lisa villages, Ogun State. A total of eighteen water samples were collected for physicochemical analysis during high rainfall (May, June and July), low rainfall (August, September and October) and dry season (Novem

Distribution of the Simulium metallicum complex in Mexico in relation to selected environmental variables.

Larvae of the Simulium metallicum complex (Diptera: Simuliidae) were collected from three foci of human onchocerciasis in Mexico. Specimens were separated into five different cytotypes, identified by morphological characteristics (head pattern and body colour) or polytene chromosome features. Differences were found between foci in the cytotype composition of the S. metallicum complex. Nearly all specimens were cytotype A in the Chamula (97%) and Soconusco (86%) foci. In the Oaxaca focus, however, cytotype I predominated (63%) with 14% cytotype A. Cytotype I comprised only 6% of specimens in th

The potential for dispersal of onchocerciasis in Ecuador in relation to the distribution of the vector Simulium exiguum (Diptera:Simuliidae).

The future dispersal of onchocerciasis in Ecuador is dependent on the distribution of cytotypes of the vector species complex Simulium exiguum. Over the last 14 years, collections of larvae have been made from over 25 rivers, between 80-1600 m altitude, from various sites on both sides of the Andes. Analysis of larval polytene chromosomes was used to determine the distributions of each cytotype. On the western side of the Andes, the Cayapa cytotype (the only cytotype directly incriminated as a vector) has a distribution from Santo Domingo de los Colorados northwards. The Quevedo and Bucay cyto

Humans vary in their ability to elicit biting responses from Simulium venustum (Diptera:Simuliidae).

Human subjects were exposed to Simulium venustum (sensu lato) to determine whether biting rates differed among individuals. Tests with S. venustum collected from a CO2-baited target demonstrated that one subject was consistently bitten more often than another. For each individual, biting increased with the differential between skin and ambient temperature. Latex rubber membranes that had been worn against the skin of subjects and then stretched onto a warned aluminum block were always bitten less often than control membranes. Results lend credibility to popular notions that some people are bit

Simulium metallicum cytospecies E larval habitat characterization in the Altamira focus of onchocerciasis, northern Venezuela.

Simulium metallicum sibling species E was identified cytotaxonomically from an onchocerciasis focus at Altamira in northern Venezuela. S. metallicum E larvae were sampled monthly from two small mountain streams over a 15-month period (July 1990 to September 1991) and eleven habitat variables were measured at two altitudes. One stream consistently harboured much higher densities of S. metallicum E larvae than the other, with three annual peaks of abundance: during the dry season and at the beginning and end of the rainy season. These peak densities were correlated with high rainfall 4 months pr

Mansonella ozzardi in Brazil: prevalence of infection in riverine communities in the Purus region, in the state of Amazonas.

This study was undertaken to investigate the prevalence of Mansonella ozzardi infection and to estimate the parasitic infection rate (PIR) in simuliid black flies in the municipality of Pauini, Amazonas, Brazil. We used thick blood films to examine 921 individuals in 35 riverine communities along the Pauini and Purus Rivers. Simuliids were caught in several communities. Flies were identified, stained with haematoxylin and dissected. Overall, 44 (24.86%) of 177 riverines were infected in communities on the Pauini River and 183 (24.19%) of 744 on the Purus. The prevalence was higher in men (31.8

Seasonality of trichomycetes in larval black flies from South Carolina, USA.

Trichomycete fungi are common endobionts of aquatic insect larvae, but little is known of their ecology. In this study, the seasonality of trichomycete colonization of larval black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) was investigated in three streams in northwestern South Carolina. At least eight species of trichomycetes were found in two species of black flies, and 93.8% of 1819 larval black flies examined contained trichomycetes. Significant differences were found in the seasonal prevalence of Harpella melusinae, Simuliomyces microsporus, and Paramoebidium spp. at one of three sites. At this site, t

Successful completion of onchocerciasis elimination mapping (OEM) in Niger, West Africa.

BACKGROUND: By 1987, onchocerciasis in Niger had been successfully controlled in the six endemic river basins. In 2017, onchocerciasis elimination mapping (OEM) was carried out to determine if there was any ongoing transmission in the country as a whole. METHODS: The recommended OEM procedures were implemented. RESULTS: Ten districts, that included 35 villages, required field investigation as sites of possible transmission. None of these were found capable of supporting black fly breeding, nor was there any evidence of the presence of Simulium sp. flies. CONCLUSIONS: The implementation of O

The cluster digging behavior of larvae confers trophic benefits to fitness in insects.

Collective behaviors efficiently impart benefits to a diversity of species ranging from bacteria to humans. Fly larvae tend to cluster and form coordinated digging groups under crowded conditions, yet understanding the rules governing this behavior is in its infancy. We primarily took advantage of the Drosophila model to investigate cooperative foraging behavior. Here, we report that Drosophila-related species and the black soldier fly have evolved a conserved strategy of cluster digging in food foraging. Subsequently, we investigated relative factors, including larval stage, population densit

A field investigation of short-range dispersal by female Simulium damnosum s.l.

Female Simulium damnosum s.l. were caught at a site in a savannah zone beside the Mono River in Togo and at varying distances westwards perpendicular to it in an experiment to investigate short-range dispersal by the flies. The numbers of flies caught and the percentages that were parous decreased with increasing distance from the river, the latter suggesting that nulliparous flies disperse on average further than parous flies. The decreases were quantified using statistically significant multiple regressions involving distances from the river and the days since the start of the experiment bec

Trichomycete symbiotes of Crozetia seguyi, a primitive black fly.

Crozetia is a genus of black flies endemic to the Crozet Islands in the Indian Ocean. No internal symbiotes were previously known from Crozetia species. We report two species of trichomycete symbiotes Stachylina litoralis and Smittium culicisoides from Crozetia seguyi. Larvae of C. seguyi were examined from three sites. The infection rates for St. litoralis was 10.0-33.3% (n=47) of the larvae and Sm. culicisoides was 46.1-85.7% (n=47). No other symbiotes were discovered.
