The current study adapts the power balance model to simulate cross-country skiing on varying terrain. We assumed that the skier's locomotive power at a self-chosen pace is a function of speed, which is impacted by friction, incline, air drag, and mass. An elite male skier's position along the track during ski skating was simulated and compared with his experimental data. As input values in the model, air drag and friction were estimated from the literature based on the skier's mass, snow conditions, and speed. We regard the fit as good, since the difference in racing time between simulations a

In Switzerland the incidence of sport injuries is twice as high as traffic injuries. Soccer and alpine skiing are the major reasons for such injuries. Nowadays one out of four skiing injuries is an injury of the knee ligaments. Especially in skiing areas favored by beginners, we observed an incidence of knee ligament injuries three times as high compared to other areas. Since 1986 we evaluated 206 patients which were operated for knee ligament injuries. In 44% the direction of instability was unidirectional, most of them in the anterior direction. 115 patients had combined instabilities, 86% o

Over a period of 10 years we have studied 14,952 cases of skiing injuries. Of these, 660 cases (4.5%) were injuries to the shoulder with 291 cases (44.1%) being anterior dislocations of the shoulder. One hundred forty-three cases revealed an initial dislocation (49.1%), and 148 cases were recurrent dislocations (50.9%). We examined the arthrography of the dislocated shoulder in 89 cases. Of these initial dislocations, one-half of the capsular detachment type were redislocated, but no redislocation had occurred in the capsular tear type. In addition, almost all of the recurrent cases were of th

Several methods could be used to measure the forces from skis or roller skis in cross-country skiing. Equipment that could measure medio-lateral forces may be of good help for investigating the relevant skating techniques. The aim of this study was to validate a pair of newly designed two-dimensional force measurement roller skis. The vertical and medio-lateral forces which were perpendicular to the body of the roller ski could be measured. Forces were resolved into the global coordinate system and compared with the force components measured by a force plate. A static and dynamic loading situa

To characterise timing of movements and evaluate performance effects of technique alterations in V2 ski skating, 13 elite male cross-country skiers (age, 23 ± 2 years; stature, 182 ± 6 cm; body mass, 76 ± 8 kg; V2 V̇O2max, 79.3 ± 4.4 mL · kg-1 · min-1) were tested four times during the preparation and competition phase on a roller ski treadmill. Each test consisted of submaximal intensities of exercise for determination of oxygen cost followed by one 1000-m performance test. Hip movement (from accelerometer data) and joint angles (2D video) were determined for high-intensity exercise (6° and 3

The aims of the study were to describe the differences between the ski skating techniques V1 and V2 and evaluate reproducibility in complex cyclic hip movements measured by accelerometers. Fourteen elite senior male cross-country skiers rollerskied twice for 1 min (V1 and V2) at 4° inclination and 3 m/s. Tests were repeated after 20 min and again 4 months later. Five triaxial accelerometers were attached to the subject's hip (os sacrum), poles, and ski boots. Post-processing included transforming to an approximately global coordinate system, normalization for cycle time, double integration for

The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of frequency on efficiency and performance during G3 roller ski skating. Eight well-trained male cross-country skiers performed three submaximal 5-min speeds (10, 13, and 16 km/h) and a time-to-exhaustion (TTE) performance (at 20 km/h) using the G3 skating technique using freely chosen, high, and low frequency at all four speeds. All tests were done using roller skis on a large treadmill at 5% incline. Gross efficiency (GE) was calculated as power divided by metabolic rate. Power was calculated as the sum of power against frictional fo

The electromyographic (EMG) activity of seven muscles of the trunk and lower extremity in five male masters level ski racers during a slalom turn in both alpine skiing and in-line skating was recorded using a telemetry system. Measurements were made on separate testing days using slopes commonly used in each activity (24 slope alpine skiing, 5 in-line skating). Qualitative video recorded at 60 Hz was analyzed to partition the turning cycle in both slalom skiing and in-line skating into initiation and turning phases. The EMG data from each turning cycle were normalized to standard isometric con

The purposes of this study were 1) to examine the occurrence of the stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) in the three principal techniques of ski skating and 2) to test the hypothesis that differences in SSC behaviour may explain the choice of a technique when the grade is altered. Ten highly skilled male cross-country skiers roller skied at 5.3+/-0.1 m x s(-1) using the V1 skate (V1), V2-alternate (V2A), and V2 skate (V2) techniques. Knee and ankle joint kinematics, EMG of the vastus lateralis (VL) and gastrocnemius lateralis (GL) muscles, and roller ski velocity were recorded during the last 40 s

The anatomy of the capsulo-ligamentous structures is most important because of its immense significance for the physiology of the knee joint and its high danger to lesions. On the other hand there exists new knowledge of anatomy which leads to a revision of the importance of the clinical findings. It must be emphasized that the capsule is as essential for the passive stability of the joint as the 4 known main ligaments. Therefore, the instability of varus and valgus must be tested in full extension and in slight flexion of 20 to 30 degrees. To exclude rotatory instability the anterior drawer t

Performance diagnostics in alpine skiing increasingly rely on integrated biomechanical and kinematic assessments to support technique optimization under real training conditions; however, many existing approaches address trajectory geometry or biomechanical variables separately, limiting their explanatory power. This study evaluates an integrated analysis framework combining OptiPath, an AI-assisted video-based trajectory analysis tool, with XSensDOT wearable inertial sensors to identify technical inefficiencies during giant slalom skiing. Thirty competitive youth athletes (n = 30; 14-16 years

The aim of this current work is to identify three different gears of cross-country skiing utilizing embedded inertial measurement units and a suitable deep learning model. The cross-country style studied was the skating style during the uphill, which involved three different gears: symmetric gear pushing with poles on both sides (G3) and two asymmetric gears pushing with poles on the right side (G2R) or to the left side (G2L). To monitor the technique, inertial measurement units (IMUs) were affixed to the skis, recording acceleration and Euler angle data during the uphill tests performed by tw

Skiing accidents may lead to severe head and neck injuries. This study uses the THUMS model to evaluate the initial conditions and related injury mechanisms of head impacts with the snow surface during skiing falls. Initial speed was found to be the main factor affecting head injury criterion (HIC). Impact position is the key factor affecting cervical curvature. Rear impacts cause excessive cervical spine extension, while frontal impacts cause excessive cervical spine flexion. Rear impacts are more likely to cause neck injuries. As the angle and speed increase, the degree of cervical spine inj

BACKGROUND: In a sprint cross-country (XC) ski competition, the difference in recovery times separating the first and the second semi-final (SF) heats from the final (F) may affect performance. The aim of the current study was to compare the effects of longer vs. shorter recovery periods prescribed between the 3 knock-out races of a simulated sprint XC ski competition involving a prologue (P), quarter-final (QF), SF, and F.
METHODS: Eleven well-trained XC ski athletes completed 2 simulated sprint XC ski competitions on a treadmill involving 4 × 883-m roller-ski bouts at a 4° incline using the

We have limited insight into how injuries occur in professional ski racing. The aim of this study was to describe the injury situations in World Cup alpine skiing. Injuries reported through the International Ski Federation Injury Surveillance System for three consecutive World Cup seasons (2006-2009) were obtained on video. In total, 69 injuries and 124 runs of matched controls were analysed by five experts to evaluate the skiing situation, skier behavior, as well as piste-related factors. A chi-square test (95% CI, P ≤ 0.05) was used to examine whether there was a difference between course se

In many sports, policy-makers and administrators employ annual cohorts to reduce differences between athletes during childhood and youth. Although well-intended, unintended relative age effects (RAEs) usually occur. RAEs refer to the specific selection, participation and attainment disadvantages associated with participants' birthdates relative to an arbitrary 'cutoff' date used to group participants within annual age groups. To date, we have little understanding of RAEs in individual sports. In this article, Study 1 considered the presence of RAEs in 1474 ski jumping, 7501 cross-country skiin
