BACKGROUND: Primary actinomycosis of the parotid gland is of rare occurrence and can mimic a malignant neoplasm both clinically as well as radiologically.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present here a case of primary actinomycosis of the parotid gland presenting with a parotid mass lesion with erosion of skull bones.
CONCLUSIONS: Clinical presentation of cervico-facial actinomycosis is characterized by the presence of a suppurative or indurative mass with discharging sinuses. The lesion demonstrates characteristic features on fine needle aspiration cytology and histology, however at times the finding

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) is a rare epithelial neoplasm of the head and neck, most commonly found in the salivary glands. Orbital AdCC is an uncommon clinical entity arising from the lacrimal glands, however primary orbital AdCC has been previously described in a small number of case reports. The exact origin of the neoplasm with uninvolved lacrimal gland in the orbit is unknown, however it may arise from ectopic lacrimal or salivary gland tissue, or extension from nearby epithelial structures. We describe the clinical characteristics, investigations and management of a 55-year-old man p

Congenital neoplasms of the central nervous system are extremely rare, although they have been well documented since the earliest reports from the mid-19th century. Medulloblastoma, other primitive neuroectodermal tumors, and various types of gliomas have comprised the majority of cases. This report describes a highly unusual infratentorial and supratentorial tumor presenting as a scalp mass in a neonate who experienced in utero distress. The supratentorial mass extended through a defect in the skull to the parietooccipital lobe, and the infratentorial aspect involved the 9th and 10th cranial

BACKGROUND: Resection of neoplasms of the cranio-orbital region represents a significant surgical challenge due to the extensive spread of the tumor into adjacent anatomical structures, deep regions of the skull base, the dense structure of the tumor, and the complexity of defect reconstruction. The aim of this study is to present a minimally invasive approach, using the example of a spheno-orbital tumor, to evaluate its effectiveness and cosmetic advantages.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 46-year-old patient with a spheno-orbital cranial neoplasm presented with exophthalmos and decreased visual acuity

BACKGROUND: Craniofacial surgery provides optimal exposure of the sinonasal cavity, epidural space, and intracranial anterior fossa compartments, facilitating oncologically en bloc radical resection from an oncological standpoint. This study represents the largest series of patients undergoing craniofacial surgery in Latin America published to date. This study aims to characterize the clinical profiles of patients undergoing craniofacial surgery and to describe the technical nuances of the combined subfrontal-transbasal and midfacial degloving approach, which we consider the most appropriate s

BACKGROUND: Orofacial neoplasms in children and young adults may differ significantly from those observed in adults. Our aim was to describe the epidemiological characteristics of histologically diagnosed orofacial neoplasms among children and young adults in Nigeria.
METHODS: This was a multicenter cross-sectional study across geopolitical zones in Nigeria. Annual reports of clinical information and surgical biopsies submitted at the Oral Pathology Laboratory, clinic day registries, surgical day case registries and operative theatre registries were retrieved from January 2008 to March 2024.

OBJECTIVE: Spontaneous recovery of a sixth nerve palsy is thought to rule out a neoplastic origin. We reviewed cases of sixth nerve palsy that improved without treatment but that ultimately proved to be caused by a tumor at the base of the skull.
DESIGN: Case series.
SETTING: Hospital-based, neuro-ophthalmology referral practice.
PATIENTS: Seven patients with an age range from 7 to 61 years had sixth nerve palsy secondary to a slow-growing neoplasm at the skull base.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Return of lateral rectus function and resolution of diplopia without intervention.
RESULTS: Seven pa

The first North American gamma knife for stereotactic radiosurgery of brain tumors and arteriovenous malformations entered the therapeutic armamentarium at the University of Pittsburgh (Pa) on August 14, 1987. In this article, we report our initial testing and subsequent experience with this technique. In the first 16 months of operation, 207 patients were treated (113 had arteriovenous malformations, 78 had extra-axial skull base neoplasms, 9 had glial neoplasms, and 7 had metastatic tumors). The patients' lesions either were considered previously as "inoperable" or were residual lesions afte

Haemangioma involving the paranasal air sinuses is rare. It presents with severe epistaxis or bleeding due to dental extraction and may mimic malignancy. A case of haemangioma of the maxilla is presented and the diagnostic and operative difficulties together with a review of literature are discussed. Bucy and Capp (1930) described primary haemangioma of bone with special reference to X-ray diagnosis. Wyke (1949) was of the opinion that haemangiomas accounted for only 10 per cent of primary benign neoplasms of skull bones. Batsakis (1979) commented that haemangioma of bone accounted for seven p

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: As a group, benign tumors account for the majority of primary neoplasms affecting the central nervous system (CNS). This article reviews the epidemiology, clinical presentation, neuroimaging features, and management of the most common of these tumors: meningiomas, schwannomas, and pituitary adenomas.
RECENT FINDINGS: Awareness of the most common nonmalignant tumors of the CNS and their management guidelines is important as many of these tumors are managed conservatively, with neurologists playing a primary role in both surveillance and symptom management. Knowledge of the v

Computed tomography (CT) is a common imaging modality used to evaluate for a pituitary macrotumor in dogs. However, a standard definition of a pituitary macrotumor based on imaging characteristics has not yet been established. The human definition of a pituitary mass that measures >1 cm in diameter has previously been adopted for dogs but fails to account for variability in size, breed, and skull conformation. We hypothesized that normal pituitary gland size and macrotumor size vary by skull morphology. We also hypothesized that canine pituitary macrotumors may be smaller than 1 cm. In this re

The surgical management of extensive skull base neoplasms, which often extend to both the sub- and epidural spaces, is still a great challenge with considerable risk. The authors report 12 cases in which a two-stage operation was performed for such nonmalignant tumours. The series consisted of four cavernous sinus meningiomas, one sphenoid-ridge meningioma, one cerebello-pontine angle meningioma, three pituitary adenomas, two chordomas, and one fibroma. Our operative strategy involved removal of the epidural part of the tumour and extensive skull base reforming during the first stage. After ap

Osteochondroma is a benign cartilaginous neoplasm and the most common benign tumor of bone. Osteochondromas occur primarily in the axial skeleton with a predilection for the distal femur, and relatively few cases occur in the head and neck region. The majority of cases of osteochondromas in the head and neck region affect the mandibular condyle, with fewer cases reported in the skull base and the neck. To our knowledge, there is no reported case of osteochondroma of the hyoid bone documented in the English literature. We thus report the first case of a hyoid bone osteochondroma, presenting as

We report on two patients with ossifying fibroma of the anterior skull base with intracranial extension. A psammomatoid ossifying fibroma was removed from a 29 year old female patient, and in a 37 year old female patient a cemento ossifying fibroma was removed. The main clinical symptom in both cases was headache. Surgery took place after diagnosis and therapy in an interdisciplinary operation with ENT colleagues. The ossifying fibroma is a benign neoplasm mainly affecting the maxilla and mandible. Complete removal is better than a curettage of the tumor.

Facial numbness and dysesthesia have not been emphasized as presenting features in spontaneous internal carotid artery dissection. Progressive facial pain, accompanied by oculosympathetic paresis, altered taste, and facial numbness suggest the possibility of basal skull neoplasm. We describe a patient, with previously undiscovered fibromuscular dysplasia, who presented with severe neck and face pain, dysgeusia, oculosympathetic paresis, and markedly reduced facial sensation due to a spontaneous vascular dissection. Altered facial sensation should now be included in the symptomatology of intern

BACKGROUND: Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms with smooth muscle and melanocytic differentiation, typically occurring in genitourinary or abdominopelvic sites. While multiple anatomic sites have been reported, craniofacial involvement is exceptionally rare.
METHODS: We report the first documented case of a probable high-grade malignant PEComa of the sinonasal tract with anterior skull base and orbital extension. The patient was a 42-year-old woman with a germline RB1 mutation, prior radiotherapy for bilateral retinoblastoma as an infant, and a histo

Chordomas are rare, slowly growing, locally aggressive neoplasms of bone that arise from embryonic remnants of the notochord. These tumors typically occur in the axial skeleton and have a proclivity for the spheno-occipital region of the skull base and sacral regions. In adults, 50% of chordomas involve the sacrococcygeal region, 35% occur at the base of the skull near the spheno-occipital area, and 15% are found in the vertebral column. Craniocervical chordomas most often involve the dorsum sella, clivus, and nasopharynx. Chordomas are divided into conventional, chondroid, and dedifferentiate

Intraosseous vascular lesions are rare conditions, comprising only 0.5% to 1% of all intraosseous tumors. They mainly occur in the second decade of life especially in women. The most common locations are the vertebral column and skull; nevertheless, the mandible is a quite rare location. According to the World Health Organization, hemangiomas are benign vasoformative neoplasms of endothelial origin. However, the origin of central hemangioma is debatable. Some authors believe that it is a true neoplasm, whereas others state it is a hamartomatous lesion. Clinically, the patient may be completely

CLINICAL CASE: The case is presented of a 21 year-old male with a history of left proptosis and diplopia of two weeks of onset. The MRI showed an ethmoid-orbital vascular lesion with anterior skull base invasion and orbital extension. Biopsy of the ethmoid confirmed fibrovascular tissue, which supported the diagnosis of angiofibroma.
DISCUSSION: It is a benign neoplasm with local characteristics of malignancy due to its ability to invade adjacent areas. In this case, the debut presented with manifestations of orbital extension. A broad and multidisciplinary approach is needed in order to impr

In this report we detail two congenital intracranial immature teratomas, noteworthy for their massive intracranial growth and extension through the skull with compromise of neck structures. Cytogenetic studies were done in both cases on the fetuses and their tumors and are the first in the literature. Few previously reported congenital intracranial teratomas have been described with neck extension. In both cases, polyhydramnios was detected by prenatal ultrasonography and was possibly caused by the laryngoesophageal and/or brainstem distortion by neoplasm. Possible reasons for such excessive,
