It has been reported that patients with epilepsy often have insomnia and/or daytime sleepiness; the symptomatologic features differ in seizure types. Not only the administration of anti-epileptics, but also inappropriate sleep hygiene cause daytime sleepiness. In subjective assessment of sleepiness, we need to pay attention if it can correctly assess or not. The prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea in patients with epilepsy is approximately 10-30%. Sleep apnea deteriorates the seizure control because of worsen sleep condition by sleep apnea, especially in elderly patients. Some researchers re

BACKGROUND: US veterans report lower health-related quality of life (HRQoL) relative to the general population. Identifying behavioral factors related to HRQoL that are malleable to change may inform interventions to improve well-being in this vulnerable group.
PURPOSE: The current study sought to characterize HRQoL in a largely male sample of veterans in addictions treatment, both in relation to US norms and in association with five recommended health behavior practices: regularly exercising, managing stress, having good sleep hygiene, consuming fruits and vegetables, and being tobacco free.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep loss is ubiquitous in military settings, and it can be deleterious to cognitive, physiological, and operational functioning. This is especially true in the military operational context (e.g., training, garrison, combat) where continuous operations prevent adequate time for rest and recuperation. Furthermore, even when servicemembers do have opportunities for sleep, environmental disruptors in the military operational context make it difficult to obtain restorative sleep. Such environmental disruptors are potentially preventable or reversible, yet there is little public awar

BACKGROUND: Insomnia is common in primary care. Cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is effective but requires more time than is available in the general practice consultation. Sleep restriction is one behavioural component of CBT-I.
AIM: To assess whether simplified sleep restriction (SSR) can be effective in improving sleep in primary insomnia.
DESIGN AND SETTING: Randomised controlled trial of patients in urban general practice settings in Auckland, New Zealand.
METHOD: Adults with persistent primary insomnia and no mental health or significant comorbidity were eligible. In

Myotonic dystrophies (DM), the most common muscular dystrophies, are known to have significant sleep disturbances. We analyzed the literature on sleep and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in DM over the past 30 years. In this review we provide a brief overview of sleep, sleep disorders, and methods of assessment. We also analyze data regarding major sleep disorders in DM patients, including: sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), with both central and obstructive sleep apneas (CSA,OSA); EDS; sleep-related movement disorders; and poor sleep quality. We review the possible pathogenesis of these dis

BACKGROUND: Insomnia is a common sleep disorder frequently comorbid with anxiety and is often attributed to psychophysiological hyperarousal. While internal and behavioral factors are typically emphasized, environmental sensory exposures are less commonly recognized as potential contributors to sleep disturbance. Menthol, a widely used compound in oral hygiene products, activates transient receptor potential melastatin 8 (TRPM8) receptors, which are known to influence acute sensory and arousal responses. However, their role in chronic sleep disturbance remains unclear.

Sleep disorders in older adults increase with aging, likely due to increased sleep latency, decreased sleep efficiency, and total sleep time. Common sleep issues include chronic insomnia, circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, sleep-related movement disorders, and sleep-disordered breathing. Diagnostic tools, such as a comprehensive sleep history and questionnaires, or a sleep log for more specific complaints, are commonly used. Polysomnography is not recommended as a routine test; however, it can be used for abnormal behaviors during sleep or if treatment fails. Sleep disorder management is b

This article describes the combined clinical experience of a multidisciplinary group of professionals on the sleep disturbances of children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) focusing on sleep hygiene interventions. Such practical and comprehensive information is not available in the literature. Severe, persistent sleep difficulties are frequently associated with this condition but few health professionals are familiar with both FASD and sleep disorders. The sleep promotion techniques used for typical children are less suitable for children with FASD who need individually designed in

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection is a leading cause of hospitalization and medical visits among individuals experiencing homelessness and also among persons who inject drugs (PWID), populations with significant overlap in urban centers in the USA. While injection drug use is a risk factor for MRSA skin infections, MRSA is also known to transmit easily in crowded, public locations in which individuals have reduced personal hygiene. Individuals in urban centers who experience homelessness or drug addiction may spend significant amounts of time in environments where MR

BACKGROUND: As poor sleep negatively impacts on adiposity, there is interest in examining whether improving sleep can improve adiposity markers. We reviewed studies aimed at improving sleep using (1) cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) and/or sleep hygiene and (2) sleep extension on adiposity markers, dietary intake, and physical activity.
METHODS: Literature searches were performed on MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library. We included studies featuring adults ≥ 18 years without OSA, a sleep intervention as well as preintervention and postintervention measures.

COVID-19 has an impact on the day-to-day life of students, with school closure and detrimental effects on health and well-being that cannot be underestimated. A study collected data reflecting the health and well-being of secondary school students entering a programme entitled "Healthy Life Planning: Assist Students to Acquire and Practice Health Knowledge and Skills" (ASAP study) in September and October 2019 before the outbreak of COVID-19. Follow-up data were collected in June and July 2020, over half a year since the spread of COVID-19, which facilitated analyses of its impact on the healt

BACKGROUND: More than half of individuals with chronic pain also experience insomnia. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is an effective and safe first-line treatment; however, access remains a major barrier to widespread implementation. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a 9-week app-delivered CBT-I intervention, compared to an app-delivered sleep hygiene education program (active control), in reducing insomnia and pain severity in patients with disabling chronic pain and comorbid insomnia.
METHODS: The trial is a 1:1 randomized, single-blind, superiority trial r

Almost everyone has sleep problems from time to time, and often, simple nonpharmacologic interventions can improve sleep hygiene. When nonpharmacologic interventions fail, patients often request and may even require treatment with hypnotics. Insomnia is a heterogeneous disorder. Patients with insomnia may have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early. Sleep disturbances are especially common in older people because of changes in sleep architecture. Though this population may benefit from hypnotics to improve sleep, these drugs increase the risk of polypharmacy, drug interact

Parasomnias are sleep disorders involving undesirable physical events or experiences occurring during sleep onset, while sleeping, or on arousal. They include non-rapid eye movement (REM) parasomnias (eg, confusional arousals, sleep terrors, sleepwalking) and REM-related parasomnias (eg, nightmare disorder, REM sleep behavior disorder, sleep paralysis). Notable among these is REM sleep behavior disorder, which is closely linked to neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson disease. Early detection of this disorder is essential because it often precedes the motor symptoms of neurodegenerati

Sleepiness is a physiological function, and can be defined as increased propension to fall asleep. However, excessive sleepiness (ES) or hypersomnia refer to an abnormal increase in the probability to fall asleep, to take involuntary naps, or to have sleep atacks, when sleep is not desired. The main causes of excessive sleepiness is chronic sleep deprivation, sleep apnea syndrome, narcolepsy, movement disorders during sleep, circadian sleep disorders, use of drugs and medications, or idiopathic hypersomnia. Social, familial, work, and cognitive impairment are among the consequences of hypersom

OBJECTIVE: Insomnia is a prevalent, treatable comorbidity in adults with epilepsy (AWE). Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBTI) is the gold standard treatment for insomnia, but its effectiveness in AWE has not been extensively studied. We conducted a randomized, single-blind, controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of computerized CBTI (cCBTI) using the Go! To SleepSM program on sleep-related outcomes in AWE and, for the first time, explored its effect on seizure control.
METHODS: AWE with moderate-to-severe insomnia were randomized to cCBTI or sleep hygiene education alone (

Narcolepsy is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, sleep paralysis, and hypnagogic/hypnapompic hallucinations. It is currently believed to be caused by a deficiency in hypocretin-producing neurons in the lateral hypothalamus. Diagnosis is by the presence of appropriate clinical symptoms and confirmation by a polysomnogram followed by a multiple sleep latency test. There are nonpharmacologic (eg, scheduled naps, following proper sleep hygiene) and symptom-directed pharmacologic (eg, central nervous system stimulants, modafinil, sodium oxybate, certain antidepressants) treat

Sleep disorders, both insomnia and hypersomnia, are commonly associated with various co-morbid conditions, including general medical and neurologic disorders, psychiatric illnesses, and secondary or symptomatic restless legs syndrome/periodic limb movements in sleep. Diagnosis of the co-morbidity is the first step in treatment, followed by an assessment of the sleep disturbance. This begins with a complete history and physical examination, followed by laboratory testing such as polysomnography, multiple sleep latency testing, and actigraphy. The treatment of sleep disorders caused by co-morbid
