Sleep plays an important role in homeostasis, brain plasticity, clearance of neurotoxins, cognition, memory, concentration, performance, and the regulation of the temperature, endocrine and immunological systems. Insufficient, disorganized, and poor-quality sleep impacts performance, cognition, and safety, carries social and economic consequences and predisposes to obesity, excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue, arterial hypertension, diabetes, stroke, coronary arterial disease, Alzheimer's disease, depression, and anxiety. Consequently, the search of sleeping well and sufficiently aims to be

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances are common in individuals with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, little is known about how daily variation in sleep characteristics is related to PTSD. This study examined the night-to-night and weekday versus weekend variation in sleep duration, sleep quality, trouble falling asleep, and difficulty staying asleep in individuals with and without PTSD.
METHODS: Participants (N = 157; 80 with PTSD, 77 without PTSD) completed daily self-reports of their nighttime sleep characteristics for 15 consecutive days. Linear mixed models were used to examine t

Despite several high-quality reviews of insomnia and incidence of mental disorders, prospective longitudinal relationships between a wider range of sleep disturbances and first onset of a depressive, bipolar, or psychotic disorders during the peak age range for onset of these conditions has not been addressed. Database searches were undertaken to identify publications on insomnia, but also on other sleep problems such as hypersomnia, short sleep duration, self-identified and/or generic 'sleep problems' and circadian sleep-wake cycle dysrhythmias. We discovered 36 studies that were eligible for

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Sleep problems are frequent and disabling in patients with Parkinson's disease. Recent data provide major advances in the mechanisms and consequences of rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorders, insomnia and narcolepsy-like daytime sleepiness.
RECENT FINDINGS: A large series confirms that rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorders may precede parkinsonism or dementia (particuarly, but not exclusively, Lewy bodies dementia) for several years. In Parkinson's disease, rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorders expose patients to higher risks of dementia and hallucinations

Insomnia, the most prevalent sleep disorder, is commonly associated with other mental and somatic disorders, making it a significant health concern. It is characterized by nighttime symptoms and daytime dysfunction, with sleepiness being a potential criterion for the latter. Sleepiness is a normal physiological state that is typically experienced near usual bedtime, in normal circumstances. In insomnia, it seems somewhat logical the idea that there is significant daytime sleepiness. However, the topic has been the subject of various discussions in sleep medicine, with studies yielding contradi

Insomnia represents a significant public health burden, with a 10% prevalence in the general population. Reduced sleep affects social and working functioning, productivity, and patient's quality of life, leading to a total of $100 billion per year in direct and indirect healthcare costs. Primary insomnia is unrelated to any other mental or medical illness; secondary insomnia co-occurs with other underlying medical, iatrogenic, or mental conditions. Epidemiological studies found a 40-50% comorbidity prevalence between insomnia and psychiatric disorders, suggesting a high relevance of mental hea

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between headaches, naps, and nocturnal sleep in women with chronic migraine (CM) using micro-longitudinal data from diaries and actigraphy.
METHODS: 20 women with CM and 20 age and sex-matched healthy controls (HC) completed self-report questionnaires, electronic diaries, and wrist actigraphy over a 4-week period. Between-group comparisons were conducted with naps (frequency and duration) as the primary variable of interest. Within-group analyses were conducted on the CM group using hierarchical linear mixed models to examine the temporal relationships b

OBJECTIVE: Systemic inflammation is commonly observed in idiopathic chronic pain conditions, including temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). Trait positive affect (PA) is associated with lower inflammation in healthy controls, but those effects may be threatened by poor sleep. The associations between PA with proinflammatory cytokine activity and potential moderation by sleep in chronic pain are not known. We thus investigated the association between PA and circulating interleukin-6 (IL-6) and moderation of that association by sleep in a sample of women with TMD and sleep difficulties.

OBJECTIVES/BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) is a disabling facial pain syndrome with a high prevalence of insomnia that primarily affects women. Insomnia with objective short sleep duration (ISSD) is an emerging phenotype linked to cardiometabolic morbidity and increased mortality. The present report examines the association of ISSD on clinical and laboratory pain and systemic inflammation in TMD.
METHODS: We collected baseline data from 128 women with TMD and insomnia as part of a clinical trial evaluating psychological interventions for sleep and pain. Participants complet

Sleep disturbances are a key feature of bipolar disorder (BD), and poor sleep has been linked to mood symptoms. Recent use of ecological momentary assessment (EMA) has allowed for nuanced exploration of the sleep-mood link; though, the scale and directionality of this relationship is still unclear. Using EMA, actigraphy, and self-reported sleep measures, this study examines the concurrent and predictive relationships between sleep and mood. Participants with BD (n = 56) wore actigraphy devices for up to 14 days and completed validated scales and daily EMA surveys about mood and sleep quality.

IMPORTANCE: Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is the most prominent nonpharmacologic treatment for insomnia disorders. Although meta-analyses have examined primary insomnia, less is known about the comparative efficacy of CBT-I on comorbid insomnia.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the efficacy of CBT-I for insomnia comorbid with psychiatric and/or medical conditions for (1) remission from insomnia; (2) self-reported sleep efficiency, sleep onset latency, wake after sleep onset, total sleep time, and subjective sleep quality; and (3) comorbid symptoms.

BACKGROUND: The co-occurrence of insomnia and hypersomnia symptoms in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with suicidal ideation and functional impairment. The relationship between sleep disturbances and clinical features and outcomes may not be adequately studied. In this study, we measured the functional impairments and clinical features of co-occurring insomnia and hypersomnia symptoms in Chinese patients with MDD.
METHODS: A post-hoc analysis was performed on data from the National Survey on Symptomatology of Depression (NSSD), which assessed the MDD patients in 32

This study conducted a narrative review of Iranian Traditional Medicine (ITM) texts to identify recommendations related to sleep hygiene. The review analyzed the available literature and compared ITM practices to contemporary scientific understanding. Findings indicate a partial alignment between traditional and modern medical perspectives, with recommendations for a comfortable sleep environment, consistent sleep schedules, and adequate sleep duration. However, several ITM concepts, including the four humors, the effects of clothing on health, specific sleep positions, and the use of opium fo

Sleep is a natural and recurring state of life. Long-term insomnia can lead to physical and mental fatigue, inattention, memory loss, anxiety, depression and other symptoms, imposing immense public health and economic burden worldwide. The sleep and awakening regulation system is composed of many nerve nuclei and neurotransmitters in the brain, and it forms a neural network that interacts and restricts each other to regulate the occurrence and maintenance of sleep-wake. Adenosine (AD) is a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system and a driver of sleep. Meanwhile, the functions and mechan

The incidence of insomnia has been increasing in recent years. In addition, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, more and more people are experiencing a variety of insomniac problems, including having difficulty in sleep initation, waking up too early, and short sleep duration. Chronic insomnia may seriously affect patients' life and work, increase their risks of developing physical and mental illnesses, and cause crushing social and economic burdens. Sedative-hypnotics, including benzodiazepine agonists, melatonin receptor agonists, orexin receptor antagonists, and antidepressants with

Maternal psychological control has been linked consistently to poorer adjustment for adolescents, however, studies of variability in the association between psychological control and adjustment are rare. Sleep serves crucial bioregulatory functions that promote well-being and protect youths against poor adjustment associated with negative family environments. We hypothesised that the link between maternal psychological control and adolescent maladjustment would be strongest for youths with poorer actigraphy-based sleep. The current study included 245 adolescents (Mage = 15.79 years, 52.2% gir
