Gnathostoma spinigerum: immunodepression in experimental infected mice.

Mice were infected with 8- or 25-infective worms of advanced third stage Gnathostoma spinigerum larvae (L3) which were obtained from natural infected eels. On day 14, 60 and 200 post infections (PI), spleen cells of infected mice were tested for lymphoproliferative responses in vitro against the mitogen and specific L3 somatic antigen in order to clarify the cellular immune status of the host upon this nematode infection. Reduced responsiveness to Con A was observed in infected mice. These depressed responses were more pronounced in chronically infected mice (day 200, PI) than in day 14 and da

Exposure of sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) to cadmium sulfide nanoparticles: biological effects and the importance of experimental design.

Effects of nanoparticles on aquatic organisms have been little studied to date and toxicological data are urgently needed for development of regulatory frameworks for these substances. Here, we report the findings of a study exposing sticklebacks to cadmium sulfide (CdS) as bulk material and quantum dots. Fish were exposed for 21 d in a flow through test system to 5, 50 or 500 microg l(-1) CdS nanoparticles (nCdS) coated in thiol terminated methyl polyethylene glycol (MPEG), bulk CdS or MPEG at 500 microg l(-1) (nominal concentrations). With the exception of the highest nCdS exposure, measured

Two new nematodes, Paraseuratoides ophisterni gen. et sp. n. (Quimperiidae) and Philometra ophisterni sp. n. (Philometridae), from the swamp-eel Ophisternon aenigmaticum in Mexico.

Two new nematodes, Paraseuratoides ophisterni gen. et sp. n. (Seuratoidea: Quimperiidae) and Philometra ophisterni sp. n. (Dracunculoidea: Philometridae) are described based on specimens recovered from the intestine and mesentery, respectively, of the swamp-eel Ophisternon aenigmaticum Rosen et Greenwood (Synbranchiformes: Synbranchidae) from a canal of the Papaloapan River in Tlacotalpan, State of Veracruz, Mexico. The genus Paraseuratoides is mot similar to Paraseuratum Johnston et Mawson, 1940, differing from it mainly in the absence of a bulbous inflation on the anterior end of the oesopha

Temporal expression profiles of tachykinin genes throughout the first reproductive cycle, male pregnancy, and brood pouch development in the big-belly seahorse (Hippocampus abdominalis).

The tachykinin family comprises highly conserved neuropeptides that regulate diverse physiological processes in vertebrates. However, the molecular characteristics and reproductive functions of this system remain poorly understood in seahorses, which exhibit the unique reproductive trait of male pregnancy. In the present study, we cloned the major tachykinin ligand genes of the big-belly seahorse (Hippocampus abdominalis) and investigated their temporal expression patterns across the first reproductive cycle, gestation, and brood pouch development via real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). Evolutionary Characteristics of the Protamine-Like Protein (PLI) Gene Family in Syngnathidae Fishes and Its Potential Regulatory Role in Sperm Morphological Specialization.

Syngnathidae fishes possess an elongated sperm morphology that is adapted for fertilization within the brood pouch. Protamine-like proteins (PLs) present a class of DNA-binding proteins that replace histones and bind to DNA during the late stages of vertebrate spermatogenesis, promoting chromatin condensation into compact sperm nuclei. To verify the correlation between the specialized sperm morphology of Syngnathidae fishes and PLI (PL Type I) gene family evolution, this study analyzed sperm morphology in 61 teleost species and revealed that Syngnathidae fishes have relatively elongated sperm

Parachrisomon debonoae n. sp. (Digenea: Monorchiidae), a new species with significant intraspecific morphological variation infecting Mullidae (Mulliformes) from the eastern and western coasts of Australia.

We report trematodes conforming to the generic concept of Parachrisomon Madhavi, 2008, infecting multiple species of goatfishes (Mullidae) from Moreton Bay (south-eastern Queensland) and off Lizard Island (northern Great Barrier Reef) on the eastern coast of Australia, and from Ningaloo Reef on the western coast. Initial morphological analyses suggested the possible presence of multiple species; however, no morphological distinctions proved consistent. Molecular analyses demonstrate a distinction between western and eastern Australian samples, especially in mt cox1 sequence data, but the diffe

Amended diagnosis of the genus Provitellotrema (Digenea: Haplosplanchnidae) with description of a new species from vietnamese mullets.

Morphological and molecular data for a new representative of the genus Provitellotrema (Haplosplanchnidae) from the mullets of the coastal waters of Vietnam were provided in the present study. Morphologically, the trematodes described here are similar to representatives of Haplosplanchnus and Pseudohaplosplanchnus and demonstrate the most closeness to Haplosplanchnus purii by most of the metric parameters. Results of molecular phylogenetic analysis show that the trematodes we found were closely related to Provitellotrema crenimugilis, and H. purii was in the same clade. Genetic distance values

A new technique to study nutrient flow in host-parasite systems by carbon stable isotope analysis of amino acids and glucose.

Stable isotope analysis of individual compounds is emerging as a powerful tool to study nutrient origin and conversion in host-parasite systems. We measured the carbon isotope composition of amino acids and glucose in the cestode Schistocephalus solidus and in liver and muscle tissues of its second intermediate host, the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus), over the course of 90 days in a controlled infection experiment. Similar linear regressions of δ13C values over time and low trophic fractionation of essential amino acids indicate that the parasite assimilates nutrients from

Case Report: The First Direct Evidence of Gnathostoma spinigerum Migration through Human Lung.

Gnathostomiasis is a helminthic infection caused by the third-stage larvae of nematodes of the genus Gnathostoma. The life cycle in humans starts with an enteric phase, with the worm perforating the gastric or intestinal mucosa to reach the peritoneal cavity and migrating through the human body. Subsequent penetration through the diaphragm may produce pleuropulmonary symptoms. We herein present a previously healthy 56-year-old Thai man from Southern Thailand who was an ex-smoker presented with chronic dry cough progressing to hemoptysis after consuming grilled swamp eels and freshwater fish. A manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) from red lip mullet, Liza haematocheila: Evaluation of molecular structure, immune response, and antioxidant function.

Manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) is a nuclear-encoded antioxidant metalloenzyme. The main function of this enzyme is to dismutase the toxic superoxide anion (O2-) into less toxic hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and oxygen (O2). Structural analysis of mullet MnSOD (MuMnSOD) was performed using different bioinformatics tools. Pairwise alignment revealed that the protein sequence matched to that derived from Larimichthys crocea with a 95.2% sequence identity. Phylogenetic tree analysis showed that the MuMnSOD was included in the category of teleosts. Multiple sequence alignment showed that a SOD F

Austrodiplostomum sp., Bolbophorus sp. (Digenea: Diplostomidae), and Clinostomum marginatum (Digenea: Clinostomidae) metacercariae in inland silverside Menidia beryllina from catfish aquaculture ponds, with notes on the infectivity of Austrodiplostomum sp. cercariae in channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus.

In the southeastern USA, catfish aquaculture is burdened by predation from piscivorous birds and the digenetic trematodes they carry. In addition to cultured ictalurid fish, other forage or incidental fish species inhabit catfish production ponds. Of these, the inland silverside Menidia beryllina was recently found to harbor larval metacercariae of several trematode species. Three species of metacercariae were reported, two of which represent the first morphological descriptions of an Austrodiplostomum sp. and Bolbophorus sp. metacercaria, respectively. A total of 15 silversides were collected

Sound production in the tiger-tail seahorse Hippocampus comes: Insights into the sound producing mechanisms.

Acoustic signals of the tiger-tail seahorse (Hippocampus comes) during feeding were studied using wavelet transform analysis. The seahorse "click" appears to be a compounded sound, comprising three acoustic components that likely come from two sound producing mechanisms. The click sound begins with a low-frequency precursor signal, followed by a sudden high-frequency spike that decays quickly, and a final, low-frequency sinusoidal component. The first two components can, respectively, be traced to the sliding movement and forceful knock between the supraorbital bone and coronet bone of the cra

The effects of food limitation on life history tradeoffs in pregnant male gulf pipefish.

Syngnathid fishes (pipefishes, seahorses and seadragons) are characterized by a unique mode of paternal care in which embryos develop on or in the male's body, often within a structure known as a brood pouch. Evidence suggests that this pouch plays a role in mediating postcopulatory sexual selection and that males have some control over the events occurring within the pouch during the pregnancy. These observations lead to the prediction that males should invest differently in broods depending on the availability of food. Here, we use the Gulf pipefish to test this prediction by monitoring grow

Brain and sense organ anatomy and histology of the Falkland Islands mullet, Eleginops maclovinus (Eleginopidae), the sister group of the Antarctic notothenioid fishes (Perciformes: Notothenioidei).

The perciform notothenioid fish Eleginops maclovinus, representing the monotypic family Eleginopidae, has a non-Antarctic distribution in the Falkland Islands and southern South America. It is the sister group of the five families and 103 species of Antarctic notothenioids that dominate the cold shelf waters of Antarctica. Eleginops is the ideal subject for documenting the ancestral morphology of nervous and sensory systems that have not had historical exposure to the unusual Antarctic thermal and light regimes, and for comparing these systems with those of the phyletically derived Antarctic s

Single-cell sequencing provides clues about the developmental genetic basis of evolutionary adaptations in syngnathid fishes.

Seahorses, pipefishes, and seadragons are fishes from the family Syngnathidae that have evolved extraordinary traits including male pregnancy, elongated snouts, loss of teeth, and dermal bony armor. The developmental genetic and cellular changes that led to the evolution of these traits are largely unknown. Recent syngnathid genome assemblies revealed suggestive gene content differences and provided the opportunity for detailed genetic analyses. We created a single-cell RNA sequencing atlas of Gulf pipefish embryos to understand the developmental basis of four traits: derived head shape, tooth

TWO NEW CERATOMYXA SPECIES (MYXOSPOREA: CERATOMYXIDAE) INFECTING THE GALL BLADDER OF MARINE FISHES FROM THE SOUTH-CENTRAL COAST OF VIETNAM.

Myxospores discovered floating free in the bile of marine fishes from the south-central coast of Vietnam were identified using morphological and molecular methods, leading to the description of 2 new species. Ceratomyxa chauvanminhi n. sp. was detected in 16% (8/50) of cultured barramundi Lates calcarifer (Bloch) specimens, and Ceratomyxa sekoi n. sp. was found in 20% (5/25) of wild largehead hairtail Trichiurus lepturus Linnaeus specimens. The spores of C. chauvanminhi n. sp. are very shallowly ovoid, slightly crescent shaped, and 11.5 ± 0.5 (10.7-12.4) μm thick, 5.8 ± 0.2 (5.4-6.1) μm long,

Distinct evolutionary lineages of Schistocephalus parasites infecting co-occurring sculpin and stickleback fishes in Alaska.

Sculpins (coastrange and slimy) and sticklebacks (ninespine and threespine) are widely distributed fishes cohabiting 2 south-central Alaskan lakes (Aleknagik and Iliamna), and all these species are parasitized by cryptic diphyllobothriidean cestodes in the genus Schistocephalus. The goal of this investigation was to test for host-specific parasitic relationships between sculpins and sticklebacks based upon morphological traits (segment counts) and sequence variation across the NADH1 gene. A total of 446 plerocercoids was examined. Large, significant differences in mean segment counts were foun

Effects of chronic exposure to a pharmaceutical mixture on the three-spined stickleback (gasterosteus aculeatus) population dynamics in lotic mesocosms.

Pharmaceutical substances are ubiquitous in the aquatic environment and their concentration levels typically range from ng/L up to several μg/L. Furthermore, as those compounds are designed to be highly biologically active, assessing their impacts on non-target organisms is important. Here, we conducted a mesocosm experiment testing a mixture of five pharmaceuticals (diclofenac, carbamazepine, irbesartan, acetaminophen and naproxen) on fish, three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). The mixture concentration levels were chosen on the basis of the contamination of the Meuse river in Be
