BACKGROUND: Qualitative smell/taste disorders (such as phantosmia, parosmia, phantogeusia, and parageusia) have not yet been fully characterized in patients who had COVID-19, whereas quantitative disturbances (i.e., reduction/loss of smell/taste) have been widely investigated.
OBJECTIVE: To simultaneously assess the presence of both quantitative and qualitative smell/taste dysfunctions in patients who suffered from COVID-19.
METHODS: We enrolled 17 consecutive patients who suffered from COVID-19 over the last 6 months and 21 healthy controls, matched for sex and age. After a negative nasopha

Numerous studies have shown that loss of smell is a serious symptom that requires careful differential diagnosis. There is convincing evidence that a violation of the sense of smell is not so much a sign of the pathology of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, but it can be a manifestation of neurodegenerative diseases. Some patients with the identified SARS-CoV-2 virus have neurological symptoms. Most of them are not specific - headache, dizziness, fatigue, myalgia. A small percentage of patients with COVID-19 infection have convulsions, impaired consciousness, and the presence of 2019-NCo

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is an inflammatory disorder of the nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses. Olfactory dysfunction is a common manifestation of CRS and one of its cardinal diagnostic features. A decreased sense of smell can have a profound impact on a CRS patient's quality of life and overall wellbeing. The treatment of CRS-associated olfactory dysfunction includes a wide range of medical interventions, including anti-inflammatory and antibiotic medications, and surgical interventions, including endoscopic sinus and nasal surgery. The evidence and treatment efficacy for these interven

Reports about fluctuating olfactory deficits are rare, as are reports of unilateral olfactory loss. We present a case of unilateral anosmia with contralateral normosmia, presenting as rapidly fluctuating anosmia. The olfactory fluctuation occurred in sync with the average nasal cycle duration. Examination after nasal decongestion, formal smell testing, and imaging revealed unilateral, left-sided anosmia of sinonasal cause, with right-sided normosmia. We hypothesize that the nasal cycle induced transient anosmia when blocking the normosmic side. Fluctuating olfactory deficits might hide a unila

Estimation of the senses of smell and taste in patients who had suffered a high central midface fracture between 1979 and 1989 was carried out. 180 of these patients were operated on for repositioning and fixation of their fractures. A written questionnaire was sent to 165 living patients, 109 individuals responded, a response rate of 66%. Of these patients, 38% claimed to suffer impaired ability to smell and 23% not to taste well. 64% mentioned unconsciousness after the trauma. With rising seriousness of the trauma, more disturbances of smell are found: from 25% of the nasal fractures, to 80%

Non-invasive detection of tumors is of utmost importance to save lives. Nonetheless, identifying tumors through gas analysis is a challenging task. In this work, biosensors with remarkable gas-sensing characteristics were developed using a self-assembly method consisting of peptides and MXene. Based on these biosensors, a mimetic biosensor array (MBA) was fabricated and integrated into a real-time testing platform (RTP). In addition, machine learning (ML) algorithms were introduced to improve the RTP's detection and identification capabilities of exhaled gas signals. The synthesized biosensor,

This study provides normative data useful for interpreting scores from the Pocket Smell Test® (PST®), a brief "scratch & sniff" neuropsychological olfactory screening test comprised of 8 items from the 40-item University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT®). We combined 3,485 PST® scores from the 2013 to 2014 National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES) of persons 40 years of age and older with equivalent PST® items extracted from an UPSIT® database of 3,900 persons ranging in age from 5 to 99 years. Decade-related age- and gender-adjusted percentile normative data were establis

Many reports by physicians and patients during the 2019 to 2020 pandemic indicate that COVID-19 is associated with elevated levels of odor and taste perception disorders (anosmia, hyposmia, ageusia, and/or dysgeusia). Recent increase in olfactory dysfunction in patients referred to ear nose and throat clinics and COVID-19 infection at the same time encouraged us to examine anosmic/hyposmic patients to establish any association between these signs. It has been shown that the COVID-19 virus exploits the uses angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptor to obtain cell entry. This result increases the

Providing expert opinion in the context of smell disorders is often challenging, not only with regard to general aspects of providing an expert opinion but particularly with regard to chemosensory testing. Currently there is no consensus which chemosensory test should be selected and how they should be executed. This positions paper from Committee on Olfaction and Gustation of the German Society of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery aims to give concrete recommendations for chemosensory testing for providing expert opinion for smell disorders with regard to the selection and execution

Total laryngectomy is performed for patients with advanced malignancy of the larynx and pharynx, and disconnects the nose and mouth from the lower respiratory tract. Rehabilitation of olfactory function in these patients is often neglected, despite recognition that anosmia and hyposmia are common and can readily be addressed. This paper reviews the literature concerning olfactory loss post-laryngectomy, methods of olfactory rehabilitation, assessment of olfactory function and quality of life issues.

Smell (olfactory) and taste (gustatory) are key senses in the regulation of nourishment and individual safety. Olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions have been infrequently reported together in patients following stroke (Landis et al., 2006; Leopold et al., 2006). This case report details two patients who experienced smell and taste dysfunction following minor stroke events. Symptoms reported included hyposmia (diminished sense of smell) and anosmia (complete loss of smell), and dysgeusia (distorted taste). Patients' sense of smell and taste were assessed in an ambulatory care stroke prevention

Kallmann's syndrome (KS) is the most common cause of isolated hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. An increased prevalence of rheumatic and autoimmune diseases has been noted in patients with hypogonadism including Kallmann's syndrome. Both in vitro and in vivo studies indicate that testosterone deficiency may promote inflammatory response such as vasculitis by altering inmmunoglobulin and cytokines profiles. We report the novel occurrence of Henoch-Schönlein purpura in a patient with markedly low testosterone level due to Kallmann's syndrome. We discuss the potential mechanisms by which hypoandroge

Phylogenetically, the chemical sense of smell is the oldest of all sensory modalities in terrestrial and aquatic organisms. For most non-human species in the wild, it is essential like other senses for survival because it aids nutrition, detection of environmental threats, and mating. In contrast to other senses, olfaction holds some unique properties: vertebrates, humans, and other mammals can distinguish many thousands of different odors due to genetically determined specific odorant receptors which have a lifespan of about 1 month and then are continuously replaced by neuroneogenesis in the

While accumulating evidence implied the involvement of retro-nasal sensation in the consumption of nonvolatile taste compounds, it is still unclear whether it was caused by the taste compounds themselves, and if so, how can they migrate from the oral to nasal cavity. At first, we proposed aerosol particles as an alternative oral-nasal mass transfer mechanism. The high-speed camera approved that aerosol particles could be generated by the typical oral and pharynx actions during food oral processing; while the narrow-band imaging of nasal cleft and mass spectrometry of nostril-exhaled air approv
