Effect of smoking cessation on cervical lesion size.

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking has been postulated as a cofactor in the aetiology of cervical cancer, but a causal role is difficult to establish because of potential confounding by sexual behaviour. We have investigated the effect of cessation or reduction of cigarette smoking on the course of minor-grade cervical lesions. METHODS: In this intervention study 82 women volunteers with minor-grade lesions on colposcopy (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 1 or less) attempted to give up smoking for 6 months. Smoking histories were taken at 3-monthly clinic visits and verified by measurement

Smoking cessation and acute airway response to ozone.

Pulmonary function and symptom responses of asymptomatic smokers were measured during chamber exposures to ozone or filtered air. Subjects were evaluated while habituated to smoking and after 6 mo of smoking abstinence. At the onset of treatment, subjects (n = 18) who had a history of smoking 33.4 +/- 15.6 packs/y and who had almost normal pulmonary function (forced vital capacity [FVC], forced expiratory volume in 1 s [FEV1.0], and mid-maximal flow [MMF] were greater than 82% of predicted) were unresponsive to ozone exposure (0.4 ppm for 2 h). A matched group of control smokers (n = 16) did n

Early predictors of smoking cessation after myocardial infarction.

The determinants of long-term smoking cessation were evaluated in 80 patients who smoked cigarettes and survived a myocardial infarction. All patients underwent a program of rehabilitation and secondary prevention including in-hospital counseling and physician-guided reinforcing sessions at 1, 3, and 6 months after discharge. At 18 months of follow-up, 53 patients (66.3%) had quit smoking. Variables associated with smoking cessation were duration of hospital stay greater than or equal to 19 days (79 vs. 48%; p less than 0.005) and peak creatine phosphokinase (CPK) elevation greater than or equ

The relationship between smoking cessation and vitamin D.

BACKGROUND: Smoking addiction is the most important reversible risk factor affecting many organs, including the heart, lungs, and central nervous system. Smoking cessation alone should not be the sole focus of smoking addiction, and comorbidities should be considered. AIMS: In our study, the relationship between successful smoking cessation and vitamin D levels was analyzed. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study. Our study included patients who visited the smoking cessation outpatient clinic. All patients were started on the same dosage of cytisine active ingredient at the same time.

Smoking cessation in emergency departments: a reality check.

Emergency Departments (EDs) see a high prevalence of people who smoke, many of whom present with acute smoking-related conditions (e.g., myocardial infarction, stroke, pneumonia, and asthma/COPD exacerbations). The immediacy of illness creates a strong "teachable moment," increasing receptiveness to risk communication and behavior change. Evidence indicates that pairing brief counseling with point-of-care therapeutic support and structured follow-up improves abstinence, although effects vary with local infrastructure, product availability, and staffing models. Despite this promise, scale-up is

Awareness of smoking cessation amongst German vascular surgeons.

Background: Smoking represents the well-known enemy of vascular well-being. Numerous previous studies emphasised the important role of smoking on the development and progression of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. The current study aimed to identify hurdles and barriers for an insufficient implementation of secondary prevention in the treatment of lower extremity peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Methods: All members of the German Society for Vascular Surgery and Vascular Medicine (DGG) with valid email addresses were invited to participate in an electronic survey on smoking. Results a

Therapeutic vapes for smoking cessation and nicotine dependence.

The Australian Government has enacted laws restricting the supply of electronic cigarettes (vapes) to people requiring them for smoking cessation or the treatment of nicotine dependence, under the care of a medical practitioner, nurse practitioner or pharmacist. Currently no vapes are included on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods, meaning that the prescription and supply of therapeutic vapes must be through the Special Access Scheme or Authorised Prescriber pathways. Clinical guidelines state that therapeutic vapes may be considered for supporting people who have been unable to quit

Impact of smoking cessation on household food security.

PURPOSE: Smokers can spend a substantial amount on cigarettes, potentially constraining their ability to purchase food. We tested the association of smoking cessation and household food security. METHODS: Using the Current Population Survey (2001-2019), we longitudinally linked the Tobacco Use Supplement and the Food Security Supplement (n = 71,278). Among adult smokers (n = 13,144), we used modified Poisson regression to model household food insecurity as a function of quit status (continuing smokers vs. recent quitters), adjusting for sex, age, household size, children in the household, and

Cytisinicline for Smoking Cessation: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Cytisinicline (cytisine) is a plant-based alkaloid that, like varenicline, binds selectively to α4β2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, which mediate nicotine dependence. Although not licensed in the US, cytisinicline is used in some European countries to aid smoking cessation, but its traditional dosing regimen and treatment duration may not be optimal. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of cytisinicline for smoking cessation when administered in a novel pharmacokinetically based dosing regimen for 6 or 12 weeks vs placebo. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A

Changes in smoking cessation in Spain, 1987-2020.

INTRODUCTION: The goal of this study was to estimate and to describe the smoking cessation changes in Spain from 1987 to 2020, according to the main sociodemographic characteristics. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Analysis of the historical series of the Spanish National Health Survey and the European Health Survey in Spain. Quit rate (QR) was defined as the number of former smokers among the total number of people who are smokers or have smoked at some time in their life. Other included variables were year of survey, age, gender and educational level. Poisson regression models were simultaneously adju

Promoting smoking cessation in the paediatric respiratory clinic.

UNLABELLED: Exposure to tobacco smoke is harmful to children and young people (CYP). There is, to our knowledge, no published evidence quantifying the success of smoking cessation interventions targeted at both CYP and their parents or guardians in paediatric respiratory clinics. We offered 102 participants smoking cessation advice, using motivational interviewing and exhaled carbon monoxide measurements to help them quit smoking. In total, 16 of 102 participants quit smoking, with 4 lost to follow-up. A further 40 participants cut down on how much they smoked. CONCLUSION: Formal screening qu

Pharmacological interventions for promoting smoking cessation during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco smoking in pregnancy causes serious health problems for the developing fetus and mother. When used by non-pregnant smokers, pharmacotherapies (nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), bupropion, and varenicline) are effective for increasing smoking cessation, however their efficacy and safety in pregnancy remains unknown. Electronic cigarettes (ECs) are becoming widely used, but their efficacy and safety when used for smoking cessation in pregnancy are also unknown. OBJECTIVES: To determine the efficacy and safety of smoking cessation pharmacotherapies and ECs used during pregn

Print-based self-help interventions for smoking cessation.

BACKGROUND: Many smokers give up smoking on their own, but materials that provide a structured programme for smokers to follow may increase the number who quit successfully. OBJECTIVES: The aims of this review were to determine the effectiveness of different forms of print-based self-help materials that provide a structured programme for smokers to follow, compared with no treatment and with other minimal contact strategies, and to determine the comparative effectiveness of different components and characteristics of print-based self-help, such as computer-generated feedback, additional mater

Assessment of lingual nerve functions after smoking cessation.

OBJECTIVE: Cigarette smoking is associated with a variety of oral diseases. A previous study showed a reduction of thermal sensitivity in the innervation area of the lingual nerve in smokers possibly caused by a degeneration of thermosensitive receptors as a consequence of smoking. The current study investigates somatosensory changes in ex-smokers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sensory functions in innervation areas of lingual nerve were investigated in 40 ex-smokers by psychophysical means. Functions of lingual nerve in 40 ex-smokers were compared to those in 40 smokers and 40 non-smokers. Subjects

Smoking cessation affects the natural history of COPD.

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking is the most commonly encountered and readily identifiable risk factor for COPD. However, it is not clear which quantitative factors related to smoking influence the prognosis of COPD patients. METHODS: A total of 204 patients with a long-term history of smoking were enrolled into this study and followed up for 5 years. Patients were divided into "death" or "survival" groups based on follow-up results and "quitting-smoking" or "continuing-smoking" groups based on whether they gave up smoking. RESULTS: Patients in the death group had a longer smoking time, lower p
