Association of nocturnal lifestyle with overweight and obesity: a cross-sectional study based on SHOOW (Shanghai Overweight/Obesity and Wellness Study) cohort.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to examine the associations between nocturnal lifestyle and overweight/obesity, especially central obesity. While most previous studies have examined individual nocturnal lifestyle factors separately, this study simultaneously evaluates three nocturnal lifestyle behaviors (weekly midnight snack frequency, bedtime, and sleep duration) in a clinical sample of overweight and obese adults, with a specific focus on central obesity indicators. METHODS: The study was based on clinical data of 1295 overweight and obese patients collected from a weight management outpatient

Diet and caries experience among preschool children in Ajman, United Arab Emirates.

The study investigated the association between food and drink consumption and the caries experience among young children in Ajman, United Arab Emirates. A one-stage cluster sample was used to select children who were 5 or 6 yr of age. Clinical examinations for caries were conducted. Parents completed questionnaires seeking information on dietary habits. Principal components analysis was used to derive a summary score for the dietary variables (designated 'snack consumption level') and thus overcome the multicollinearity problems associated with using multiple dietary variables. Dental examinat

Commercially produced complementary foods in Bandung City, Indonesia, are often reported to be iron fortified but with less than recommended amounts or suboptimal forms of iron.

Commercially produced complementary foods (CPCF) that are iron fortified can help improve iron status of young children. We conducted a review of 217 CPCF sold in 42 stores in Bandung, Indonesia, in 2017. There were 95 (44%) infant cereals, 71 (33%) snacks or finger foods (biscuits or cookies, puffs, and noodles or crackers), 35 (16%) purees, and 16 (7%) other foods for which we obtained label information. Nearly 70% of CPCF reported iron content on their labels, but only 58% of products were reported to be fortified with iron according to ingredient lists. Among iron-fortified products, only

Effectiveness of nutrition counseling on reducing sugar intake amount and frequency: A randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is a widespread oral health issue with significant medical and socioeconomic consequences. Despite preventive measures, nearly 90% of US adults have experienced caries, disproportionately affecting lower-income and minority populations. While fluoride use and oral hygiene practices help mitigate caries development, dietary sugar remains a primary driver. However, nutrition counseling in dental settings remains underutilized. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This randomized, single-center, two-group clinical study assessed the impact of Stephan's curve-based nutrition counselin

Neural correlates of choosing alcohol over a palatable food reward in humans.

BACKGROUND: In a population of light and heavy, nontreatment seeking drinkers, we recently showed that choice for alcohol versus a concurrently available snack reward was sensitive to the relative cost of alcohol. Here, we examined the neural substrates of alcohol choice using functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a new sample of light and heavy drinkers. METHODS: Participants were scanned during the Concurrent Alcohol Food Choice task, and collected points associated with the images of alcohol or snack rewards that they could redeem at the end of the experiment. As cost manipulation

Eating during immunotherapy sessions: a cross-sectional study of meal quality in patients with rheumatic diseases undergoing intravenous therapy with immunomodulators.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Intravenous (IV) immunotherapy sessions are common among patients with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs). Although immunotherapy plays an important role in disease management, treatment-specific evidence-based nutritional guidance is currently lacking. The present cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate meal quality in patients with RMDs on the days of IV infusion immunotherapy sessions and make recommendations on how to improve dietary intake on these days, aiming to achieve ameliorated therapeutic results with less adverse events. METHODS: A total of 168

The Association of Dietary Patterns with Age-Related Macular Degeneration in a Multiethnic Older Singaporean Population.

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: The associations of dietary patterns and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) have been reported using mostly Western and Japanese populations and evidence in multiethnic Asian populations, with potentially different dietary patterns, is lacking. In this study, we aimed to identify dietary patterns in a multiethnic older Singaporean population and examine their associations with AMD. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional analysis of the Population Health and Eye Disease Profile in Elderly Singaporeans (PIONEER) study. Dietary intake was assessed using a 110-item i

How fat will it make me? Estimation of weight gain in anorexia nervosa.

This study investigates the subjective estimation of weight gain in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) when being confronted with food cues both in a general (self-unrelated) and in an intent-to-eat (self-related) condition. Looking at the presentation of different snack pictures with different nutrition values (high-low calories), AN patients (N = 24) and age-matched healthy women (N = 27) estimated the weight gain when they imagined eating the presented portions of snack pictures once a day in addition to the normal daily nutrition in the following two conditions: 1) a general condition wit

[Prevalence and significance of carbohydrate craving in Austria].

Among disorders of appetite and eating frequent craving of carbohydrate containing snacks between meals is well known. Excessive carbohydrate consumption causes increased caloric intake and may lead to overweight and risks of obesity regarding metabolism and vascular remodelling. Up to now prevalence and consequences of that disorder have never been studied in the Austrian population. Hence we investigated by questionnaires and interviews eating habits in samples of 1058 women and 942 men of the Austrian population. Evaluation showed that carbohydrate craving is a more or less serious problem

Fast eating is a strong risk factor for new-onset diabetes among the Japanese general population.

Although many studies that have examined the relationship of type and amount of food and the frequency of eating with new onset of diabetes, there are few reports on the relationship between how meals are eaten, such as skipping breakfast, snacking or food ingestion speed, and the onset of diabetes. We investigated the relationship between eating speed, as well as other eating habits such as snacking and skip breakfast, and new onset of diabetes in a nation-wide Japanese cohort. We obtained data from the nation-wide annual health check program in Japan. In 197,825 participants without diabetes

Training response inhibition to food is associated with weight loss and reduced energy intake.

The majority of adults in the UK and US are overweight or obese due to multiple factors including excess energy intake. Training people to inhibit simple motor responses (key presses) to high-energy density food pictures reduces intake in laboratory studies. We examined whether online response inhibition training reduced real-world food consumption and weight in a community sample of adults who were predominantly overweight or obese (N = 83). Participants were allocated in a randomised, double-blind design to receive four 10-min sessions of either active or control go/no-go training in which e

Impact of Sleep and Associated Factors on the Prevalence of Early Childhood Caries: An Analytical Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Early childhood caries (ECC) occur soon after the eruption of teeth and can progress rapidly, causing severe impact on the physical, physiological, and psychological well-being of the child. Irregularities in sleep patterns can result in decreased salivary flow rate and the immune response, which ultimately can affect the rate of progression of early childhood caries. AIM: To assess the prevalence of early childhood caries and its association with sleep practices, the habit of frequent snacking, and the usage of phones and smart devices by children before bedtime in the age group

Association between empirically derived dietary patterns with blood lipids, fasting blood glucose and blood pressure in adults - the India migration study.

BACKGROUND: Dietary patterns (DPs) in India are heterogenous. To date, data on association of indigenous DPs in India with risk factors of nutrition-related noncommunicable diseases (cardiovascular disease and diabetes), leading causes of premature death and disability, are limited. We aimed to evaluate the associations of empirically-derived DPs with blood lipids, fasting glucose and blood pressure levels in an adult Indian population recruited across four geographical regions of India. METHODS: We used cross-sectional data from the Indian Migration Study (2005-2007). Study participants incl

The role of child care settings in obesity prevention.

Mary Story, Karen Kaphingst, and Simone French argue that researchers and policymakers focused on childhood obesity have paid insufficient attention to child care. Although child care settings can be a major force in shaping children's dietary intake, physical activity, and energy balance-and thus in combating the childhood obesity epidemic-researchers know relatively little about either the nutrition or the physical activity environment in the nation's child care facilities. What research exists suggests that the nutritional quality of meals and snacks may be poor and activity levels may be i
