Silicosis caused by chronic inhalation of snail shell powder.

A 70-yr-old woman visited our hospital for shortness of breath. Chest CT showed ground glass opacity and traction bronchiectasis at right middle, lower lobe and left lingular division. Video-assisted thoracic surgical biopsy at right lower lobe and pathologic examination revealed mixed dust pneumoconiosis. Polarized optical microscopy showed lung lesions were consisted of silica and carbon materials. She was a housewife and never been exposed to silica dusts occupationally. She has taken freshwater snails as a health-promoting food for 40 yr and ground shell powder was piled up on her backyard

Snail is critical for tumor growth and metastasis of ovarian carcinoma.

Snail, a key inducer of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), plays an important role in cancer metastasis. To better understand the role of Snail in the metastasis of ovarian carcinoma, expression of Snail was knocked down by antisense-Snail in the highly metastatic ovarian cancer cell line HO8910PM. Gene array analysis revealed that blocking Snail expression suppressed the activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and upregulated TIMP3, an MMP inhibitor. These findings suggest that Snail interacts with MMP during tumor invasion and metastasis. In addition, we examined the role of Snail

Vector control of snail-mediated human trematode infections.

Inspite of the recent general acceptance of the use of safe and effective chemotherapeutic drugs in the treatment of major human trematode infections, vector control e.g. control of the snail intermediate host will continue to play an important role in programmes for controlling schistosomiasis, clonorchiasis, opisthorchiasis and paragonimiasis. The main vector control measures are: a) use of chemical pesticides or molluscicides and plants showing molluscicidal properties; b) biological control through introduction of competitor species or natural enemies of snails; c) alteration of the enviro

HERBICIDE TRIALS IN THE SNAIL HABITATS OF THE EGYPT 49 PROJECT.

The molluscan hosts of Schistosoma haematobium, Schistosoma mansoni and Fasciola spp. have been found to flourish in association with certain submersed, floating and emergent weeds in the irrigation system of the Egypt 49 project area. The efficacy of acrolein in killing Potamogeton crispus, an important submersed weed, has been previously established. The present paper deals with field trials of different herbicides, alone or combined, against the other predominant types of floating and emergent weeds-Eichhornia crassipes, Panicum repens, Typha ungustata and Scirpus inclinatus. The trials sho

The control of snail hosts of bilharziasis and fascioliasis in Southern Rhodesia.

The authors review the experimental work that has been done since the Second World War on the use of chemical molluscicides in Southern Rhodesia and describe the development of a co-operative snail control campaign involving local landowners and various Government departments. In 1959 and 1960 efforts were concentrated on four large-scale experiments to test the methods of application of copper sulfate, sodium pentachlorophenate and Bayer 73 under a variety of climatic and physiographic conditions. From this work the authors conclude that it would appear possible and practicable to control vect

Biological studies on the snail, Bulinus truncatus, in Central Iraq.

This paper presents some results of field and laboratory studies on Bulinus truncatus, the snail intermediate host of urinary bilharziasis in Iraq, made in 1958 as part of the work of the WHO Bilharziasis Control Project in that country.Observations on the linear distribution and size composition of Bulinus populations in the canals of central Iraq indicate that molluscicides might most suitably be applied in May before the entire snail population reaches breeding size, or early in November when most snails are juveniles. However, laboratory experiments appear to show that isolation of individ

Impact of chemical snail control on intermediate host snail populations for urogenital schistosomiasis elimination in Pemba, Tanzania: findings of a 3-year intervention study.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) has set the goal of eliminating schistosomiasis as a public health problem globally by 2030 and to interrupt transmission in selected areas. Chemical snail control is one important measure to reduce transmission and achieve local elimination. We aimed to assess the impact of several rounds of chemical snail control on the presence and number of the Schistosoma haematobium intermediate snail host (Bulinus spp.) in water bodies (WBs) on Pemba Island, Tanzania, a setting targeted for elimination of urogenital schistosomiasis. METHODS: During the th

Control of snail hosts of bilharziasis in Egypt. 2. Effect of triphenyltin hydroxide (Du-Ter) on carbohydrate metabolism of the snails Biomphalaria alexandria and Bulinus tuncatus.

Previous work has shown that the aerobic oxidation of certain intermediates of Krebs cycle by the snail B. alexandrina and B. truncatusis inhibited by TPT. This paper reports data on the effect of TPT on glucose utilization, glycolysis, glycogen content, and glucone ogenesis in snail tissue preparations. The compounds at its LC50 inhibited gluconeogenesis, stimulated glycolysis and markedly reduced the glycogen content and glucose utilization in both snails. However, the effects were more pronounced in B. truncatus than in B. alexandrina. Possible interpretations of these findings are discusse

Significant Progress in the Study of African Freshwater Snails Over the Past 260 Years.

Globally, freshwater ecosystems are threatened. Research progress concerning African freshwater snails was reviewed using a systematic review process. Since 1757, the number of publications produced has increased, particularly in the last decade. In the first 50 years (1757-1800), 0.1% of publications on freshwater snails in Africa were conducted, followed by 0% (1801-1850), 3.3% (1851-1900), 3.5% (1901-1950) and 48.7% (1951-2000). The last 23 years (2001-2024) exhibited a large increase (44.3%) in publications of the total conducted. Studies on freshwater snails varied in number across the 10

Chitosan Nanoparticles: A Dual Approach for Mollusk and Infection Control in Biomphalaria alexandrina Snails.

Chitosan nanoparticles (CNPs), derived from crab shells, are eco-friendly and effective molluscicides. Their enhanced bioactivity makes them ideal for controlling disease-carrying mollusks, including freshwater snails that transmit Schistosomiasis. This study evaluates the molluscicidal effects of chitosan nanoparticles on Biomphalaria alexandrina snails, including those infected with Schistosoma mansoni, to assess their potential in schistosomiasis control. Chitosan nanoparticles were synthesized by dissolving 0.6% chitosan in 1% acetic acid, adjusting the pH to 4.7, and adding 0.3% TPP under

Impact of pesticides exposure on Archachatina marginata snails in four Cameroon monomodal rainforest sites.

Cameroon monomodal rainforest zone has a strong agricultural activity and is therefore exposed to pesticides. Furthermore, the area possesses climatic factors that favor the growth of Achatinadea snails known as African giant snails, a delicacy for the local population. The present study aimed to evaluate pesticides contamination (less vs more exposed areas) through assessment of exposure and impact on Achatinadea snails. Achatinadea snails were collected within intensive agricultural areas (Njombe and Kribi rural) and in areas with less agricultural activity (Ebodje and Dibombari). Collection

HISTOPATHOLOGIC FINDINGS IN 10 CASES OF MORTALITY IN CAPTIVE MALAYSIAN FIRE SNAILS (PLATYMMA TWEEDIEI).

Malaysian fire snails (Platymma tweediei), face threats to their environment, including habitat destruction and the illegal wildlife trade. Captive breeding projects are likely to play a role in the survival of this species; however, mortality in captive populations potentially presents a significant challenge. This paper presents the results of histopathologic examination of tissues from 10 P. tweediei casualties in a captive population at Chester Zoo. In October 2022, a captive breeding program was established with 20 wild-born P. tweediei. All adult founder animals died by July 2023, of whi

Organ Tropism of Angiostrongylus vasorum Larval Stages in Infected African Giant Snails (Lissachatina fulica).

Angiostrongylus vasorum is a metastrongyloid lungworm causing severe cardiovascular disease in domestic and wild animals. During its heteroxenous life cycle, A. vasorum requires obligate gastropod intermediate hosts. Little is known about A. vasorum larval organ tropism and development in gastropod intermediate hosts. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze in vivo development of A. vasorum larval stages in experimentally infected African giant snails (Lissachatina fulica). Adult L. fulica (n = 26) were orally infected with A. vasorum-L1 and thereafter continuously euthanized. Gastropod org

Infection with Trematodes in Littorina obtusata Snails (Gastropoda: Littorinidae) with Different Shell Color Genotypes.

The prevalence of infection with trematode parthenitae was studied in Littorina obtusata littoral periwinkles with different shell color genotypes. Activities of genes responsible for a purple or orange single-pigment background shell coloration was not found to affect the prevalence of trematode infection in periwinkles. In L. obtusata with a yellow-purple background shell color and a pattern of white pigment spots on the shell, the prevalence of infection with Microphallus piriformes and M. pygmaeus was lower than the theoretical expectation. The prevalence of infection in periwinkles with p
