Natural phospholipase A(2) myotoxin inhibitor proteins from snakes, mammals and plants.

A renewed interest in the phenomenon of inter- and intra-species resistance towards the toxicity of snake venoms, coupled with the search for new strategies for treatment of snake envenomations, has prompted the discovery of proteins which neutralize the major toxic components of these venoms. Among these emerging groups of proteins are inhibitors of toxic phospholipases A2 (PLA2s), many of which exhibit a wide range of toxic effects including muscle-tissue damage, neurotoxicity, and inflammation. These proteins have been isolated from both venomous and non-venomous snakes, mammals, and most r

A national hospital-based survey of snakes responsible for bites in Thailand.

Snakes which had been killed and brought to hospital with the patients they had bitten were collected in 80 district and provincial hospitals throughout 67 provinces in Thailand in order to establish the geographical distribution and relative medical importance of the venomous species. Of the 1631 snakes collected, 1145 were venomous: Malayan pit vipers (Calloselasma rhodostoma), green pit vipers (Trimeresurus albolabris) and Russell's vipers (Daboia russelii) were the most numerous, while T. albolabris, C. rhodostoma and spitting cobras ('Naja atra') were the most widely distributed. Clinical experience in the therapy of bites from exotic snakes in Berlin.

Since there are nearly no indigenous poisonous snakes in Germany, snake bites by poisonous snakes are rare. Most serious snake bites reported to poison information centres or treated at hospitals are caused by exotic snakes that are kept in private households. Only few types of antivenom are stored in emergency depots in Germany including polyvalent antivenoms from commercial sources. Since experience with the treatment of poisonous snake bites is limited, the records of the Intensive Care Unit and the Poison Information Centre of the Universitätsklinikum Rudolf Virchow from 1980-1991 were eva

Interaction of cholinesterase inhibitors with snake venom acetylcholinesterase from snake species of Southern Africa.

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is present in the venom of Elapid snakes, except the Mambas. Although the physiological role of AChE in snake venom is uncertain, it may contribute to acute neuromuscular paralysis following envenomation. With the aim of repurposing clinically used drugs for snakebite envenoming, this study investigated the inhibition of AChE from snake species of Southern Africa. Hemachatus haemachatus and Naja nivea venom presented with high AChE activity, which was inhibited by tacrine, galantamine and donepezil with IC50 values ranging from 0.49 to 3.73 μM.

Comparison of two Anti Snake Venom protocols in hemotoxic snake bite: A randomized trial.

The dose of Anti Snake Venom (ASV) in hemotoxic snake bite depends on the amount of venom injected and species of snake. All trials in South East Asia have studied different doses of ASV, wherein the ASV in high dose group itself was lower than the dose that is recommended in Indian National protocol. These studies favored low dose protocol, as there was no difference in mortality and morbidity between the groups. So, this study intended to assess the efficacy of National protocol in reducing morbidity and mortality in hemotoxic snake bite in comparison to current protocol followed in institut

Medico-legal significance of the identification of offending snake in a fatal snake bite: a case report.

A 19 year old male was admitted to a tertiary care centre in Sri Lanka, with a history of snake bite while sleeping at night. A killed specimen of a snake was brought with the patient. It had been identified as a non-venomous snake by the doctor and handed over to relatives, with a comment to that effect. Patient had no clinical or laboratory evidence of envenoming on admission. Patient developed bilateral ptosis six hours after alleged snake bite, soon followed by respiratory paralysis and was treated with Indian polyvalent anti-venom serum. After 12 h of the bite, patient had developed hypot

Snake venoms in science and clinical medicine. 2. Applied immunology in snake venom research.

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is a very important tool for studying both the epidemiology and clinical effects of snake bite in man. For epidemiology ELISA depends on the development and persistence of specific humoral venom antibody in previous snake bite victims. In the Nigerian savanna 63% of previous bite victims possessed specific venom antibodies against Echis carinatus venom; in Ecuador, where there is a 5% annual mortality due to snake bite in a population of Waorani Indians, venom antibodies against a wide range of different venoms were identified in previous bite victims

Web-based snake identification service: A successful model of snake identification in Sri Lanka.

Snakes are reptiles of great biomedical significance. The accurate identification of snakes is particularly important for healthcare workers to diagnose and treat victims of snakebite envenoming. Further, snake identification is vital for the general population, especially to those who live in areas of high snakebite incidence. Owing to the great diversity of snakes and the superficial similarities between some species, the correct identification of these reptiles is often difficult. Therefore, identification of snake species is challenging for healthcare workers, biologists, naturalists, and

Comparison of Different Dosing Protocols of Anti-Snake Venom (ASV) in Snake Bite Cases.

INTRODUCTION: Considering the cost of Anti-Snake Venom (ASV) and irregularity in its supply, there is often a need to curtail doses of ASV, despite guidelines for management of snake bite. During June 2013 to September 2013, when ASV was in short supply, our institutional committee reviewed the overall hospital statistics of snake bite cases as well as scientific literature and formulated a working modified protocol that used low dose of ASV in snake bite cases. AIM: To retrospectively analyse and compare the modified ASV protocol versus conventional ASV protocol with respect to outcome, numb

The good, the bad and the ugly: Australian snake taxonomists and a history of the taxonomy of Australia's venomous snakes.

The Australian snake fauna is unique in harbouring more venomous species than non-venomous ones. Although taxonomic research on the elapid snakes of Australia goes back to the late 18th century, in stark contrast to other developed regions of the world (e.g. the continental USA), Australian snake taxonomy is very much in its infancy. Despite this, or perhaps because of this, the taxonomy of Australian snakes has been extraordinarily controversial, and many of the taxonomists involved correspondingly colourful. In this review, we explore the sometimes-tortured history of the taxonomic explorati

Scents and Scent Ability: Can Snakes Identify Heterospecifics and Conspecifics Using Airborne Semiochemicals?

All animals produce semiochemicals (i.e., scent)-chemical cues that elicit physiological or behavioral responses in other individuals. Scent detection and discrimination is a fundamental aspect of the social system of many animal species, and is particularly important for snakes and other squamate reptiles. Snakes rely extensively on chemosensory information in most aspects of their life, and have a highly derived tongue-vomeronasal sensory system that is active when exploring novel chemical cues. While the role of non-volatile semiochemicals in snake behavior has received a great deal of atte

Identifying Infectious Agents in Snakes (Boidae and Pythonidae) with and Without Respiratory Disease.

Mycoplasmas are known respiratory pathogens in tortoises, but few studies exist in snakes. To better understand the correlation with clinical signs and co-infections, samples from mycoplasma-positive snakes with and without clinical respiratory disease were analyzed. Oral swabs from 15 snakes (pythons n = 12, boas n = 3) were examined using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and third-generation sequencing (TGS). Additionally, mycoplasma isolation assays were performed. Pathogens detected by PCR included Mycoplasmas (15/15, 100%), serpentoviruses (9/15, 60%), and Chlamydia sp. (2/15, 13%); those

Virulence factors of Salmonella spp. isolated from free-living grass snakes Natrix natrix.

Salmonellosis associated with reptiles is a well-researched topic, particularly in China and the United States, but it occurs less frequently in Europe. The growth of the human population and changes in the environment could potentially increase the interaction between humans and free-living reptiles, which are an unidentified source of Salmonella species. In this study, we sought to explore this issue by comparing the microbiota of free-living European grass snakes, scientifically known as Natrix natrix, with that of captive banded water snakes, or Nerodia fasciata. We were able to isolate 27

Animals evoking fear in the Cradle of Humankind: snakes, scorpions, and large carnivores.

Theories explain the presence of fears and specific phobias elicited by animals in contemporary WEIRD (Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic) populations by their evolutionary past in Africa. Nevertheless, empirical data about fears of animals in the Cradle of Humankind are still fragmentary. To fill this gap, we examined which local animals are perceived as the most frightening by Somali people, who inhabit a markedly similar environment and the region where humans have evolved. We asked 236 raters to rank 42 stimuli according to their elicited fear. The stimuli were standar
