Enabling spaces for (varied) co-existence.

For people in homelessness, access to social services may appear difficult and alienating, which often contributes to poor health and a risk of accelerated marginalization. Historically, day centres for people in homelessness have been characterized by an emphasis on providing refuge and momentary restitution, accommodating urgent basic needs. In this article, we present a case study of the design of a new day centre in Denmark that aspires to move beyond the historical place-for-being. Rather, the new day centre is to be a place-for-being-and-becoming, focusing on bridging the varied needs of

MMPI-2 as a predictor of change in PTSD symptom clusters: a further analysis of the Forbes et al. (2002) data set.

In this study, we reanalyzed the Forbes et al. (2002) data set to examine the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-2; Butcher, Dahlstrom, Graham, Tellegen, & Kaemmer, 1989) as a differential predictor of change across posttraumatic stress disorder symptom clusters following treatment in 141 Vietnam veterans. A series of partial correlation and linear multivariate regression analyses, controlling for initial symptom severity, identified several scales predictive of symptom change. None of the MMPI-2 scales, however, emerged as predictors of change in reexperiencing symptoms. Social

The Body in Question in the Existence of Hysteric Persons: A Phenomenological Perspective.

The concept of hysteria, although apparently surpassed by contemporary nosographic classifications, continues to be talked about. Following Charbonneau's attempt to de-feminize and de-sexualize hysteria, clinical phenomenology can offer a perspective which, freed from stigma and prejudices through the suspension of judgement, allows us to understand hysteria not as a diagnostic category but as an existential position. In this sense, hysteria would be based on a hypo-sufficiency of the embodied self, which is not perceived as solid and continuous and needs external confirmations of its adequacy

Correlates and 6-month outcomes for co-occurring cannabis use in rural and urban at-risk drinkers.

We know little about the functional correlates of recent cannabis use when such use is additional to an "alcohol disorder" in non-treatment populations. We report on data from a prospective study of a large probability community survey of 733 at-risk drinkers in six Southern U.S. states (Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee) conducted from 1995 to 1996. Twenty-one percent reported cannabis use during the past six months at the baseline interview. These cannabis users were significantly less likely to be married, employed, or a high school graduate (p < .05). They w

Is there a suicidality syndrome independent of specific major psychiatric disorder? Results of a split half multiple regression analysis.

Biological findings such as low 5-HIAA levels in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in suicidal patients compared to non-suicidal patients independent of the type of psychiatric disorder indicate a broad basis for suicidality. It is therefore important to ask whether a suicidality syndrome can be delineated on a phenomenological level, and whether it is independent of specific major psychiatric disorders which are otherwise considered to be aetiologically different. This paper reports on a study of 2383 schizophrenic and 1920 depressive unselected patients with and without suicidality. They were assess

Social buffering by siblings in childhood and adolescence.

Although positive sibling relationships are associated with better developmental outcomes for children and adolescents, it is unknown whether siblings may be effective social buffers of physiological stress. In addition, there is little research on whether depressive symptoms may moderate the effectiveness of social buffering. The current study examined (1) whether siblings, compared to strangers, buffered the cortisol response to a social evaluative stressor in children and adolescents, (2) whether depressive symptoms moderated this effect, and (3) whether self-reported sibling relationship q

Beyond and through the body: Subjective experiences of gender dysphoria across bodily and social dimensions.

BACKGROUND: Traditional definitions of gender dysphoria (GD) reflect a binary, body-centered understanding of distress, often neglecting the influence of social and cultural contexts and failing to capture the lived experiences of transgender and nonbinary (TNB) individuals-especially nonbinary people. AIM: The present study aimed at exploring TNB young adults' subjective experiences of GD across bodily and social dimensions, while also attending to the interaction between these experiences and their fluctuations over time and context, moving beyond binary and transnormative assumptions. The collapsing perimeter. A commentary on life, death, and death-in-life.

The individual is encased in an existential, phenomenological space that has the capacity to contract or expand, to isolate itself, or to join with others. An analysis is provided of how this individual space capsule functions under varying circumstances, such as depression, schizophrenia, sociopathy, divorce, child-battery, aging, death, overpopulation, cultural disruption, and execution.

Internalized Stigma and Psychiatric Morbidity among Patients with Psoriasis: A Study from North India.

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory dermatosis associated with psychological morbidity. Like mental illness, it is also associated with stigma. Very few studies from India have evaluated stigma experienced by patients with psoriasis. AIM OF THE STUDY: To study stigma in patients with psoriasis (in the form of internalized stigma, perceived stigma, and social-participation-restriction stigma) and its relationship with demographic and clinical variables. METHODOLOGY: 104 patients with psoriasis assessed on the internalized stigma of mental illness scale (ISMIS), explanatory model i

A comparison of rape and molest offenders in prison psychiatric treatment.

Differences in offense history, brain functioning, and psychological functioning of rape (n = 45) and molest offenders (n = 15) who were receiving psychiatric treatment while in prison were evaluated. Significant differences were found in each of these domains. Rape offenders were more likely to have histories of high violence offenses other than sexual offense, including murder, serious juvenile offenses, and both juvenile and adult sexual offenses. Rape offenders were more likely to show lower intellectual functioning and diffuse brain dysfunction associated predominantly with temporal and p

Core schemas and suicidality in a chronically traumatized population.

The Young Schema Questionnaire (YSQ) has been demonstrated to tap into core beliefs, or maladaptive schemas, of clinical populations. This study used the YSQ to investigate maladaptive schemas of 137 chronically traumatized patients seeking outpatient psychiatric treatment and to assess whether specific schemas might be associated with suicide risk in this population. Participants completed a modified version of the YSQ-S (short form), post-traumatic diagnostic scale, dissociative experiences scale and self-harm and risk behaviors questionnaire-revised at treatment intake. Significant correlat

Temperamental and environmental risk factors for borderline personality disorder among inner-city substance users in residential treatment.

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is widely considered the result of biological vulnerability and environmental adversity. Despite growing evidence for the role of several temperamental and environmental risk factors in the development of BPD, the unique contribution of each to the development of this disorder remains unclear. Furthermore, the extent to which these factors are associated with BPD among underserved and diverse populations is unknown. The current study examined the temperamental and environmental factors uniquely associated with BPD among a sample of 93 inner-city individual

Measurement of nonclinical personality characteristics of women with anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa.

Past research on personality and eating disorders has most often emphasized personality psychopathology and personality disorders. We further investigated nonclinical personality characteristics among women with anorexia nervosa (n = 35) or bulimia nervosa (n = 45) using the Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire (MPQ; Tellegen, 1982, 1985). The MPQ measures several personality traits that have been shown to consist of a substantial genetic component (Tellegen et al., 1988). In logistic regression analyses, women with anorexia nervosa evidenced greater degrees of control (vs. impulsivity)

Computerized measurement of the content analysis of natural language for use in biomedical and neuropsychiatric research.

Over several decades, the senior author, with various colleagues, has developed an objective method of measuring the magnitude of commonly useful and pertinent neuropsychiatric and neuropsychological dimensions from the content and form analysis of verbal behavior and natural language. Extensive reliability and validation studies using this method have been published involving English, German, Spanish and many other languages, and which confirm that these Content Analysis Scales can be reliably scored cross-culturally and have construct validity. The validated measures include the Anxiety Scal
