Seeing red: How perceptions of social status and worth influence hostile attributions and endorsement of aggression.

Within social hierarchies, low social status is associated with increased vigilance, hostile expectations, and reactive aggression. We propose that societal devaluation is common across many low social status groups and produces a sense of threatened social worth. Threatened social worth may lead those of low status to be more vigilant towards social threats, thereby increasing the likelihood of hostile attributions and endorsement of aggression. Integrating theory on belongingness, social rejection, and stigma compensation, two studies test a sequential process model demonstrating that threat

Early-life socioeconomic position and later-life cognitive functioning: A meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: This meta-analysis aimed to quantify the association between childhood SEP and later-life cognitive functioning and identify possible moderators. METHOD: We conducted random-effects meta-analyses of 39 reports, contributing 49 independent subsamples from 229,824 respondents. Moderators were analyzed using meta-regression and subgroup analyses. RESULTS: There was a small, positive correlation between childhood socioeconomic position (SEP) and cognitive functioning in older adulthood across the overall summary effect (r = 0.161), global cognitive functioning (r = 0.183), verbal epi

[The thesis of judicialization of health care by the elites: medication for mucopolysaccharidosis].

This paper evaluates the hypothesis that the judicialization of medicine for mucopolysaccharidosis in Brazil is an action promoted by economic elites. Previous studies upholding the thesis of judicialization by elites in the case of other types of medication that are more costly for the Unified Health Service are discussed. An analysis of all 196 processes containing information about judicial processes brought to court between February 2006 and December 2010 that ended by determining that the State should provide such medication free of charge to patients was conducted. There is evidence that

Dental attitudes and behavior related to vertical social mobility by marriage.

Following a dental examination of 5-year-old children, the mothers of 367 of them were interviewed. In 262 cases there was sufficient information relating to the social class of both the mother's husband and her father to enable the relationship between social mobility by marriage and the mother's dental attitudes and behavior to be assessed. The results showed that the views of mothers who moved from one social group to another fell between those of the mothers who were static in each of those two groups. Those mothers who were downward mobile had less favorable attitudes than those who had r

Socioeconomic status and depression-a systematic review.

Low socioeconomic status (SES) has been associated with an increased risk of depression and psychiatric disorders in general. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we provide an estimate of the risk of clinical depression associated with low SES across cultures, age groups, and study designs. Finally, we tested whether associations between SES and depression differed by the income of the country in which the study was conducted. A literature search across 5 databases returned 7943 studies. Title, abstract, and full-text screening resulted in 162 included studies of which 122 were meta-a

Economic inequalities and temporomandibular disorders: A systematic review with meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are a common and debilitating condition that affects millions of people globally. Despite extensive research on TMDs, the exact causes of these conditions remain unclear. However, various factors, including genetics, injury and stress, have been implicated in their development. In addition to these traditional risk factors, the literature suggests that socioeconomic status (SES) may also play a role in the development and progression of TMDs. By synthesizing the available evidence, this review will provide a comprehensive understanding of the ro

Peer behavior toward socially anxious adolescents: classroom observations.

This study focused on the relation between adolescents' social anxiety and the way they are treated by classmates. The link between class behavior during oral presentations and the social anxiety of the speakers was investigated. Social anxiety was measured both as a trait variable and as manifest in two state anxiety characteristics. A group of 55 students from Grades 8 and 9 were selected to participate in the study. Class behavior during their presentations was rated by the students themselves, their teacher, and an independent observer. Results showed that negative class behavior was relat

Social Deprivation and Peripheral Artery Disease.

The link between peripheral artery disease and socioeconomic status is complex. The objective of this narrative review is to explore that relationship in detail, including how social factors affect the development, management, and outcomes of peripheral artery disease. Although the current literature on this topic is limited, some patterns do emerge. Populations of low socioeconomic status appear to be at increased risk for the development of peripheral artery disease, owing to factors such as increased prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors (eg, cigarette smoking) and decreased access to c

Nervousness and performance characteristics as predictors of peer behavior towards socially anxious adolescents.

Social anxiety in adolescents has frequently been linked to negative outcomes from social interactions. The present study investigated whether socially anxious adolescents are treated negatively by their classmates and which characteristics of socially anxious adolescents could explain negative social responses. Classroom observations of class behavior were made during oral presentations of 94 students (60% females) in the ages of 13-18 years. Speakers' social performance, speech quality, and nervousness during the presentation were also rated. Findings showed that the social performance of so

Physical activity in social contexts during the COVID-19 pandemic: a latent transition analysis.

BACKGROUND: While physical activity behaviours have been explored during the COVID-19 pandemic, little is known about the social contexts in which physical activity took place during this time of crisis. The purpose of this longitudinal study was to explore the physical activity-related social contexts in which young people (aged 15-24) engaged during the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ontario, Canada. Specific objectives included identifying: (1) how patterns of engagement in social contexts changed over time; and (2) demographic/descriptive predictors of social context-related c

Explaining the social gradient in smoking in pregnancy: early life course accumulation and cross-sectional clustering of social risk exposures in the 1958 British national cohort.

Smoking in pregnancy is a major determinant of low birthweight and a range of adverse infant health outcomes. There is a well-established social gradient in smoking in pregnancy in the US and northern Europe. Social gradients in health-related behaviours may result from longitudinal accumulation and cross-sectional clustering of social risk exposures. There is, however, no published confirmation of this explanation in empirical data with smoking in pregnancy as the outcome. This study aimed to test the effects of longitudinal accumulation and cross-sectional clustering of social risk exposures

Machine Learning to Predict Executive Function in Adolescents with Repaired d-Transposition of the Great Arteries, Tetralogy of Fallot, and Fontan Palliation.

OBJECTIVE: To identify predictors of impaired executive function in adolescents after surgical repair of critical congenital heart disease (CHD). STUDY DESIGN: We analyzed patient factors, medical and surgical history, and family social class from 3 single-center studies of adolescents with d-transposition of the great arteries (d-TGA), tetralogy of Fallot (TOF), and Fontan repair. Machine learning models were developed using recursive partitioning to predict an executive function composite score based on five subtests (population mean 10, SD 3) of the Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System.

Analysis of the relationship between two-way social support and health based on a latent profile analysis among migrant older adults in China: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Two-way social support, involving both receiving and providing support, is an important psychosocial factor influencing older adults'health. Migrant older adults may face increased health risks due to migration-related disruption of social networks, making social support particularly important. However, existing studies have mainly focused on received support, with limited attention to patterns of both support receipt and provision. This cross-sectional study aimed to identify latent classes of two-way social support and examine their associations with health among migrant older ad

The separation in coordination between social- and self-regulation for emerging adults with type 1 diabetes.

To examine how self-regulation and social-regulation surrounding type 1 diabetes (T1D) management are coordinated during early emerging adulthood and whether classes of coordination relate to HbA1c and executive functioning (EF). Emerging adult participants (N = 212) with T1D (M age = 18.8 years, SD = .40) completed a 14-day diary to capture components of self-regulation and social-regulation. A mixture multi-level latent coordination model first determined the separate but coordinated factor structure of self- and social-regulation, then determined the number of distinct classes of coordinati

The role of manual occupation in the aetiology of Dupuytren's disease in men in England and Wales.

We compared the incidence of significant Dupuytren's disease in men across occupational social classes in England and Wales, using data from the National Morbidity Survey. We found that manual occupational social class was not associated with an increased incidence of Dupuytren's disease. In fact, the incidence rates of Dupuytren's disease in the elderly were higher in non-manual than in manual social classes.

[Effect of socioeconomic factors on twin pregnancy].

A material of 336 mothers of twins was divided into four groups on the basis of socioeconomic background. On average, mothers belonging to the first social class delivered at 38.2 +/- 1.6 week of pregnancy and their newborn weighed more than those in other social classes. Careful follow-up at outpatient maternity clinics is warranted in the case of expectant mothers of twins belonging to the third or fourth social class.

Diet quality in older age: the influence of childhood and adult socio-economic circumstances.

Socio-economic gradients in diet quality are well established. However, the influence of material socio-economic conditions particularly in childhood, and the use of multiple disaggregated socio-economic measures on diet quality have been little studied in the elderly. In the present study, we examined childhood and adult socio-economic measures, and social relationships, as determinants of diet quality cross-sectionally in 4252 older British men (aged 60-79 years). A FFQ provided data on daily fruit and vegetable consumption and the Elderly Dietary Index (EDI), with higher scores indicating b

Explanation of social inequalities in hyperactivity/inattention in children with prenatal alcohol exposure.

BACKGROUND: Hyperactivity and inattention are major effects of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE). Although predominantly women from the high social class consume alcohol during pregnancy, children from the low social class are particularly affected by the adverse effects of PAE. This study aimed to test the hypothesis of a social gradient in hyperactivity/inattention in children with PAE. METHODS: Children with PAE (N=996) enrolled in the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents (KiGGS) were studied. KiGGS was designed and conducted by Robert Koch Institute (R
