[Impact of out-of-home activities, neighborhood and urban-related identity on well-being in old age].

BACKGROUND: Aging in a neighborhood environment is considered to be important for well-being particularly in very old age. AIM: The project "This is my place" - On the importance of a place in the neighborhood for healthy aging (German acronym BEWOHNT) emphasises the role of out of home activities, neighborhood experiences and urban-related identity on well-being. The aim of this paper is to test the impact of person-environment exchange processes of "agency" (e.g., out-of-home activity) and "belonging" (e.g., urban related identity, social cohesion) on well-being (valuation of life) in addit

The Social-Psychological Consequences of COVID-19: An Integrative Review and Research Agenda.

The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed profound social-psychological vulnerabilities and strengths across societies worldwide. Beyond its immediate health implications, the pandemic has triggered a wave of mental health issues, disrupted social cohesion, and challenged community resilience. This paper synthesizes the current literature, critically discusses five recent studies as part of the Special Issue "Mental Health Consequences of COVID-19: The Role of Social Determinants", and articulates an agenda for future research within a social-psychological framework. Moving beyond mere negative effec

Adolescence in social context: Longitudinal associations of 15 social factors with health and well-being.

Concern is growing that social disconnection poses serious risks to health and well-being, especially for adolescents. Yet without clear evidence on which relational factors (e.g., parent-child, sibling, romantic, and friend relationships; connectedness to families, schools, and neighborhoods) matter most, designing effective, developmentally attuned interventions remains difficult. To address this question, we used data from a large, nationally representative sample of U.S. adolescents (Add Health) and an outcome-wide approach to prospectively test whether one-year changes (between Wave I: 19

[Pragmatic impairments in individuals with Asperger syndrome: characteristics and interventions].

Researches on pragmatic impairments in individuals with Asperger syndrome were reviewed in regard to its characteristics and interventions. The very wide diversity of their pragmatic impairments was studied in terms of speech acts, expressing mental states, comprehension of indirect speech, question and answer, conversational turn-taking, narratives, pronouns and addressing forms, inferential language, reference and cohesion, and humor and joke. As for theories on background of the impairments, theory of mind and relevance, central coherence, executive function, general semiotic deficit, and o

Understanding mechanisms of impact from community-led delivery of HIV self-testing: Mediation analysis of a cluster-randomised trial in Malawi.

Community HIV strategies are important for early diagnosis and treatment, with new self-care technologies expanding the types of services that can be led by communities. We evaluated mechanisms underlying the impact of community-led delivery of HIV self-testing (HIVST) using mediation analysis. We conducted a cluster-randomised trial allocating 30 group village heads and their catchment areas to the community-led HIVST intervention in addition to the standard of care (SOC) or the SOC alone. The intervention used participatory approaches to engage established community health groups to lead the

Establishing research and translation priorities and care pathways for families where a parent lives with mental ill health.

Service users and carers have recently had input into establishing mental health research and translation priorities in Australia. This study extends that work to include the voice of those with lived experience of parental mental ill health. Although, parental mental ill health is a global public health issue there is a substantial gap in knowing the research and implementation priorities for parents and their families. This study sought to establish the priorities that families with lived experience of parental mental ill health have for support and intervention, along with what social facto

Family functioning and psychiatric outcomes in children and young people with intellectual and developmental disabilities caused by rare genetic mutations.

BACKGROUND: A range of rare chromosomal micro-deletions or -duplications (Copy Number Variants - CNVs) are associated with high risk of neurodevelopmental and mental health conditions (ND-CNVs). There is great individual variability in outcomes, but we lack insights into the contributing social factors, including family functioning. METHODS: Caregivers of 598 children and young people (CYP) with a range of 16 ND-CNVs and 222 siblings without ND-CNVs (controls) completed questionnaires on overall family climate (cohesion and conflict) as well as caregiver-CYP relationship warmth and hostility

Oxytocin promotes altruistic punishment.

The role of neuromodulators in the enforcement of cooperation is still not well understood. Here, we provide evidence that intranasal applied oxytocin, an important hormone for modulating social behavior, enhances the inclination to sanction free-riders in a social dilemma situation. Contrary to the notion of oxytocin being a pro-social hormone, we found that participants treated with oxytocin exhibited an amplification of self-reported negative social emotions such as anger towards free-riders, ultimately resulting in higher magnitude and frequency of punishment of free-riders compared to pla

Neighborhood social environment and physical activity among persons living with dementia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Physical activity (PA) helps delay the progression of cognitive and functional decline among persons living with dementia. Neighborhood social environments are well-known to support or hinder PA among older adults, but their associations with PA among persons living with dementia remain poorly understood. This study examines how neighborhood characteristics (affluence, deprivation, safety, friends, relatives, cohesion, and disorder) relate to PA among U.S. community-dwelling persons living with dementia. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We used 2006-2018 Health and Reti

The biological origins of rituals: An interdisciplinary perspective.

Ritual behavior is ubiquitous, marking animal motor patterns, normal and psychopathological behavior in human individuals as well as every human culture. Moreover, formal features of rituals appear to be highly conserved along phylogeny and characterized by a circular and spatio-temporal structure typical of habitual behavior with internal repetition of non-functional acts and redirection of attention to the "script" of the performance. A continuity, based on highly conserved cortico-striatal loops, can be traced from animal rituals to human individual and collective rituals with psychopatholo

The impact of family stress and resilience on child development: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: Children grow up spending most of their time within the family social environment, where they can experience stressful situations such as marital conflict, a non-cohesive environment, parental alcohol use disorder, parental depression, and other parental mental health issues. All these factors are associated with children's developmental delays. We aimed to conduct a scoping review on associations between family stress and family resilience and child development delays to examine familial conditions associated with child development. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of observ

Interrelations between the small isolated groups with homogeneous and heterogeneous composition.

Increase in the heterogeneity of a space crew's composition (cultural and gender differences) is a risk factor that can negatively influence the formation of a cohesive crew, which depends on a common way of perceiving one's social environment, goals and values. Method. Three groups working in isolation from 110 to 240 days, all with different cultural and gender composition were analysed using a modification of Kelly's repertory grid technique during a space simulation at the Institute for Biomedical Problems, Moscow. Subjects assessed themselves and each other monthly. Results. National Russ

Toward a Unified Theory of Group Connection.

Behavioral scientists have long been struck by the human tendency to connect with other individuals and groups. Three major approaches to group connection have been advanced: (a) the social cohesion approach, (b) the social identity approach, and (c) identity fusion theory. While each approach has garnered support, no one has attempted to integrate them. We address the need for integration by proposing a general theoretical framework that specifies the unique contributions of each approach, identifies the psychological phenomena each best explains, and reconciles theoretical inconsistencies. Families of young adolescents who have survived cancer: social-emotional adjustment, adaptability, and social support.

Young adolescent (10-15 year old) survivors of childhood cancer and their families (n = 35) completed self-report measures of perceived self-competence, social support, child behavior, parental distress, and family adaptability and cohesion, at two data points, 6 months apart. Relative to instrument norms and a comparison group (n = 13), survivors and their families scored within normative levels. The overall lack of group differences is discussed in terms of the implications of tests of the null hypothesis for families with chronically ill children. Changes over time for the survivors suggest

Why care for humanity?

Some of the most pressing challenges facing our planet-such as climate change, biodiversity loss, warfare and extreme poverty-require social cohesion and prosocial action on a global scale. How can this be achieved? Previous research suggests that identity fusion-a strong form of group cohesion motivating prosocial action-results from perceptions of shared personally transformative experiences or of common biological essence. Here, we present results from two studies with United States samples exploring each pathway to identity fusion on a global scale. Study 1 focused on globally shared mothe

"The Force is In Our Union": Church-Based Advocacy Training and Neighborhood Change in East Los Angeles.

There is limited evidence regarding strategies that policymakers can use to revitalize neighborhoods without contributing to displacement, particularly those involving community advocacy. This study examines how a sample of Latino Catholic parishioners in the eastern Los Angeles area perceive advocacy and neighborhood change before and after participating in a park environmental advocacy training. Two groups with a total of 16 participants (85% women, median age 68) of a faith-based physical activity intervention received a two-day advocacy training in December 2023 and March 2024. Contagious yawning is stronger in wolves than in dog-admixed wolves.

Behavioural contagion occurs when the behaviour of one individual elicits the same behaviour in another individual observing the event, and it is considered one of the fundamental mechanisms promoting group coordination and cohesion in social species, including humans. Empirical research on behavioural contagion has focused primarily on yawning and has shown evidence of it in several animal species. Here, we studied behavioural contagion in 2 groups of captive wolves (N = 20) and 3 groups of captive dog-admixed wolves (N = 13). We conducted behavioural observations of naturally occurring yawni

Sex-specific discrimination of familiar and unfamiliar mates in the Tokay gecko.

Social animals need to keep track of other individuals in their group to be able to adjust their behaviour accordingly and facilitate group cohesion. This recognition ability varies across species and is influenced by cognitive capacities such as learning and memory. In reptiles, particularly Squamates (lizards, snakes, and worm lizards), chemical communication is pivotal for territoriality, reproduction, and other social interactions. However, the cognitive processes underlying these social interactions remain understudied. In our study, we examined the ability of male and female Tokay geckos

Perceptions of Social Climate and Aggressive Behavior in Forensic Services: A Systematic Review.

Social climate is a term used to describe the environment of a particular setting which may influence the moods and behaviors of the people inhabiting that setting. This review explores perceptions of social climate in secure forensic services and the associations with aggression. Article searches were conducted using electronic databases, hand-searching reference lists, and contacting experts. Inclusion/exclusion criteria were applied to each study, and quality screens conducted on the remaining articles to establish those for inclusion. A total of seven studies were identified. Factors which
