Randomized Controlled Trial of Developmental Reciprocity Treatment in Young Children with Autism.

Developmental social pragmatic interventions for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) focus on development of strong interpersonal relationships by encouraging social communication during joint play routines. The goal of the current investigation was to conduct a randomized controlled 24-week pilot trial to examine the efficacy of a Developmental Reciprocity Treatment package (DRT-P), a developmentally-based intervention that includes both parent training and direct treatment with the child, compared to a delayed treatment group (DTG). Thirty-seven children aged 2-5 years with ASD and language delay

Early predictors of pragmatic language competence: A longitudinal study.

Pragmatic language competence-the ability to use language effectively in social contexts-is foundational for communication, learning, and social integration. Difficulties in pragmatics are not only a hallmark of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) but are also prevalent across developmental disabilities, including ADHD, developmental language disorder, and intellectual disability. Such deficits predict long-term challenges in adaptive functioning, peer relationships, and educational attainment. This longitudinal study investigates early predictors of pragmatic language competence in middle childhoo

Self-disclosure, emotional expression and intimacy within romantic relationships of people with social phobia.

The current study examined aspects of communication and intimacy between people with social phobia and their romantic partners. Forty-eight individuals with social phobia and 58 community controls completed a series of questionnaires to measure self-disclosure, emotional expression and levels of intimacy within their romantic relationships. Participants with social phobia reported less emotional expression, self-disclosure and intimacy than controls, even after controlling for a diagnosis of mood disorder. The group differences did not differ significantly by gender. A continuous measure of so

External challenges for individuals who need or use AAC who are learning language: lived experiences, key research findings, and future directions.

Language skills are essential to effective communication, but learning language is by no means a simple process for individuals with developmental disabilities who cannot rely on speech alone to be heard and understood. Research demonstrates that augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) interventions positively impact development across language domains (e.g., pragmatics, semantics, morphosyntax) and may also benefit speech production. However, these gains can only be realized if people have timely access to effective AAC and have meaningful opportunities to interact with others. This

Practitioner Review: Multilingualism and neurodevelopmental disorders - an overview of recent research and discussion of clinical implications.

BACKGROUND: Language and communication skills are essential aspects of child development, which are often disrupted in children with neurodevelopmental disorders. Cutting edge research in psycholinguistics suggests that multilingualism has potential to influence social, linguistic and cognitive development. Thus, multilingualism has implications for clinical assessment, diagnostic formulation, intervention and support offered to families. We present a systematic review and synthesis of the effects of multilingualism for children with neurodevelopmental disorders and discuss clinical implicatio

Diagnosing autism spectrum disorders in primary care.

Autism is a disorder of social communication, originally described as a triad of impaired social interaction, communication, and imagination, associated with a rigid, repetitive pattern of behaviour. More recently the core deficit has been described as a lack of social instinct. The term autism spectrum disorder (ASD) includes autism, atypical autism and Asperger's syndrome. According to NICE, diagnostic assessment should start within three months of referral. The decision to refer should be made on the basis of signs or symptoms. Information from all sources (i.e. medical history, parental co

When silence is not golden: an integrated approach to selective mutism.

Selective mutism (SM) is a rare disorder that is associated with both anxiety and communication impairments. Preliminary evidence suggests that educational attainment and development of social skills and self-esteem may be affected by SM in a significant proportion of cases. There is a critical need for cross-disciplinary research from the fields of speech-language pathology, psychiatry, and clinical psychology to develop protocols for assessing language and cognitive functioning in children with SM and developing interventions that address psychiatric, communicative, and social aspects of thi

Assessment of conversational pragmatics: A screening tool for pragmatic language impairment in a control population of children aged 6-12 years.

Pragmatics can be defined as the way in which language is used to communicate in a given social context. Although there is a lack of a standardized assessment, healthcare professionals find themselves confronted with pragmatic language skill impairments in children with neurodevelopmental disorders or brain injuries. The characterization of language use causes problems in social interactions, which has clinical implications in daily life. However, this is still underestimated because there is currently no quick, easy-to-use screening device to rank these deficits. We have developed a pragmatic

Social Skill Profiles in ADHD and Comorbid Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Many children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) demonstrate impairment in social skills. However, ADHD rarely occurs in isolation, with approximately one-third of children with ADHD having one additional disorder, and another third having two or three comorbidities. Few studies have considered the global and specific patterns of social skill performance based on comorbidity status. METHOD: Using a large dataset containing 1400 carefully phenotyped children with ADHD (ages 7-12; 28% girls) in the United States and Canada, we characterized social skill deficit pro

Gut microbiota on gender bias in autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder. Its three core symptoms are social communication disorder, communication disorder, narrow interest and stereotyped repetitive behavior. The proportion of male and female autistic patients is 4:1. Many researchers have studied this phenomenon, but the mechanism is still unclear. This review mainly discusses the related mechanism from the perspective of gut microbiota and introduces the influence of gut microbiota on the difference of ASD between men and women, as well as how gut microbiota may affect the gender dimorphism

Differences in praxis performance and receptive language during fingerspelling between deaf children with and without autism spectrum disorder.

Children with autism spectrum disorder present with a variety of social communication deficits such as atypicalities in social gaze and verbal and non-verbal communication delays as well as perceptuo-motor deficits like motor incoordination and dyspraxia. In this study, we had the unique opportunity to study praxis performance in deaf children with and without autism spectrum disorder in a fingerspelling context using American Sign Language. A total of 11 deaf children with autism spectrum disorder and 11 typically developing deaf children aged between 5 and 14 years completed a fingerspelling

Major clinical improvement in a boy with developmental disabilities and a PTPN4 mutation with intensive re-education and an enriched environment in a day care hospital: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Protein tyrosine phosphatase, non-receptor type 4 (PTPN4) is a gene involved in glutamate downstream signaling contributing to cerebral maturation. Loss-of-function of this gene has been reported in patients showing various neurodevelopmental disorders, although the PTPN4 gene is not clearly considered a disease-causing gene in the Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man catalogue. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report the case of a 7-year-old white boy with a homogeneous, heterozygous, 170 kb chromosomal deletion encompassing several exons of the PTPN4 gene. The mutation was transmitted

[Potential analysis of research on speech therapy-led communication training in aphasia following stroke].

HEALTH PROBLEM: In Germany, about 100,000 people currently suffer from aphasia. This speech disorder occurs as a result of neurologic events such as stroke or traumatic brain injury. Aphasia causes major limitations in social participation and quality of life and can be associated with unemployability and social isolation. For affected persons, it is essential to regain and maintain autonomy in daily life, both at work and with family and friends. The loss of autonomy is perceived much more dramatically than the loss of speech. Clients wish to minimise this loss of autonomy in daily life. As f

Enhancing social and linguistic skills in children with autism: A semi-randomized controlled clinical trial of a virtual reality-based communicative rehabilitation programme.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by persistent deficits in social communication, and conventional therapies often struggle to facilitate the generalization of these skills to real-world settings. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a virtual reality (VR)-based communication rehabilitation intervention as a supplement to conventional treatment for improving the linguistic and social communication skills of Arabic-speaking Egyptian children with ASD. A clinical trial with a pretest-posttest control group design was employed, wherein 60 children aged 4-6 years with m

[Assessment of autism spectrum disorder in young people].

Autism is currently considered as a neurodevelopmental disorder called "autism spectrum disorder" (ASD). Its diagnosis is based on assessments focusing on two main areas: the presence of persistent impairments in communication and social interactions in varied contexts, as well as the presence of a stereotypical or repetitive nature of the subject's movements, use of objects or language. The complementary functional diagnosis enables a personalised project to be constructed taking into account the resources and difficulties of the individual with ASD. It focuses on cognitive, communication, ps

Symptom profiles of autism spectrum disorder in tuberous sclerosis complex.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the extent to which deficits associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in toddlers with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) overlap with those in toddlers with nonsyndromic ASD (nsASD) and to examine cognitive function and epilepsy severity in toddlers with TSC and comorbid ASD. This is the endpoint analysis from a longitudinal investigation of ASD risk factors in children with TSC. METHODS: Measures included the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS), the Mullen Scales of Early Learning, and clinical epilepsy variables. A repeated-measures analysis of varianc

Navigating barriers and embracing facilitators of connection: insights from peer recovery specialists working with individuals with substance use disorder and criminal justice involvement: a qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorder affects over half of incarcerated individuals, with 23% experiencing opioid use disorder specifically. Addressing opioid use disorder in jails is crucial due to its association with increased recidivism and overdose. This study investigates the experiences of peer recovery specialists working with individuals with opioid use disorder and criminal justice involvement, focusing on barriers and facilitators to client connections. Qualitative interviews were conducted and thematically analyzed using a hybrid inductive and deductive coding approach. The sample inv

Differentiating autism spectrum disorder from other developmental delays in the first two years of life.

Advances in the identification of the early signs of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have occurred despite the heterogeneity of the disorder and its variable onset and presentation. Using various methodologies including retrospective studies, community samples, and sibling cohorts, researchers have identified behavioral markers of the disorder that emerge over the first 2 years of life. However, there are characteristics of ASD that overlap with other types of developmental delay (DD), which may complicate differential diagnosis in young children. A review of the literature was conducted to ide
