Mapping out a spectrum of the Chinese public's discrimination toward the LGBT community: results from a national survey.

BACKGROUND: China has the world's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) population. This study assessed the discrimination experienced by LGBT individuals in China in a comprehensive way, covering discrimination perpetrated by family, media, medical services, religious communities, schools, social services, and in the workplace. METHODS: The current study involved a national survey of 31 provinces and autonomous regions. Discrimination was measured both in terms of heterosexual participants' attitudes towards LGBT individuals, and LGBT participants' self-perceived discriminat

Stigma and Discrimination (SAD) at the Time of the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic.

Infectious disease control is a crucial public health issue. Although it is important to urgently perform public health measures in order to reduce the risk of spread, it could end up stigmatizing entire groups of people rather than offering control measures based on sound scientific principles. This "us" versus "them" dynamic is common in stigmatization, in general, and indicates a way in which disease stigma can be viewed as a proxy for other types of fears, especially xenophobia and general fear of outsiders. The pandemic risk associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection led us to consider, among o

Marked by Association(s): A Social Network Approach to Investigating Mental Health-Related Associative Stigma.

With most scholarly attention directed toward understanding the stigma experiences of individuals with mental illness, less attention has been given to associative stigma: an understudied form of social exclusion and devaluation experienced by the social ties of stigmatized individuals. This study advances scholarly understanding of associative stigma by drawing on social network methods to better illuminate how the quantity and quality of social relationships with those dealing with mental illness impact experiences of perceived discrimination. Using a nationally representative sample from th

Maternal separation facilitates extinction of social fear in adult male mice.

Early life stress, such as child abuse or neglect, is a risk factor for the development of psychopathologies characterized by abnormal social and emotional behaviors. In rodents, long-lasting changes in stress coping and emotional behavior can be induced by separating pups from their mother. We used maternal separation (MS; 3h daily on postnatal days 1-14) to test whether early life stress alters acquisition and extinction of social fear in adult male mice as studied in a specific model of social fear, i.e., in the social fear conditioning paradigm. We show that MS facilitated extinction of so

Discrimination, Smoking, and Cardiovascular Disease Risk: A Moderated Mediation Analysis With MESA.

BACKGROUND: Carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) and carotid plaque are reliable indicators of cardiovascular disease risk, and research highlights that racial and ethnic minority individuals generally exhibit higher cIMT and carotid plaque than White individuals. At present, the mechanisms driving these disparities among different racial and ethnic and biological sex groups are poorly understood. METHODS AND RESULTS: Data came from the baseline examination of MESA (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis). A total of 6814 participants aged 45 to 84 years free of clinical cardiovascular diseas

Social referencing in infants of mothers with symptoms of depression.

The present study examined the acquisition of social referencing skills in infants of mothers with symptoms of depression (n = 44). We aimed to determine if a short discrimination training could facilitate infants' social referencing. Mothers were instructed to pose either joyful or fearful facial expressions to cue infants' approach/avoidance responses toward an ambiguous object. Maternal expressions were correlated with pleasant or unpleasant events occurring after the infant's response. The results showed that after the intervention, infants looked at their mothers more frequently and reach

Identity, Belonging, and Psychological Well-Being Among Indigenous Minorities: The Case of Bedouin Young Adults.

This cross-sectional study examined identity, belonging, perceived discrimination, and psychological well-being among 348 Bedouin young adults in Israel (ages 18-30; M = 20.8, SD = 3.7). The survey assessed identity endorsement and centrality, belonging to the Bedouin community, perceived discrimination, perceived identity threats, and psychological well-being. Latent class analysis identified three descriptive identity profiles: (1) Ambivalent/Moderate Bedouin (mixed identities with moderate endorsement; n = 158), (2) Bedouin-Centered (near-exclusive endorsement of Bedouin identity with limit

Perceived discrimination, coping, and psychosocial adjustment: A mixed methods study of Chinese internal migrant youth.

Studies of identity-based discrimination among Chinese youth attending vocational schools and working in urban areas are scarce. To contribute to the global understanding, we adopted an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design with 204 Chinese internal migrant youth (Aged 16-24, 68.1% male, Mage = 20.17 years, SD = 1.57) to examine the associations between perceived discrimination and psychological adjustment, and the moderating roles of coping and perceived social support. In the first phase, participants completed self-report measures, and in the second phase, we interviewed a subsample o

Evolving a More Nurturing Society to Prevent Adverse Childhood Experiences.

This article presents a framework for evolving a society that nurtures the health and well-being of its population. We review evidence that adverse social conditions, including poverty, conflict, discrimination, and other forms of social rejection, contribute immensely to our most ubiquitous psychological, behavioral, and health problems. We then enumerate the ways that effective family and school prevention programs could ameliorate much of the social adversity leading to these problems. The widespread and effective implementation of these programs-in primary care, social services, and educat

Examining Longitudinal Risk and Strengths-Based Factors Associated with Depression Symptoms Among Sexual Minority Men in Canada.

Sexual minority men (SMM) experience anti-SMM stressors and have elevated rates of mental health issues compared to heterosexual men, such as depression. Importantly, strengths-based factors may directly increase wellbeing and provide a buffer against the detrimental effects of such stressors. In the present study, we integrated risk and strengths-based models to examine predictors of depression symptoms in a sample of 465 Canadian SMM across three time points using multilevel modeling. Higher scores on a measure of childhood physical abuse at baseline, and greater within-person (i.e., deviati

Cognitive, Regulatory, and Interpersonal Mechanisms of HIV Stigma on the Mental and Social Health of Men Who Have Sex With Men Living With HIV.

Public stigma surrounding HIV is related to heightened emotional distress, poor psychological functioning, and reduced subjective well-being in people living with HIV. For men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV, they may also face stigmatizing attitudes within the gay community, which create an additional burden to their health. Grounded in the psychological mediation framework, the present study examined the underlying psychological processes through which HIV stigma from the public and within the gay community influences the mental and social health of MSM living with HIV. Findings

Genetic discrimination in India: Constitutional challenges and ethical implications.

BACKGROUND: This paper examines the emerging challenge of genetic discrimination (GD) in India, through constitutional, judicial, and ethical perspectives. GD is a critical issue driven by increasing accessibility to genetic testing and insufficient legal safeguards against misuse. METHODS: The study adopts a qualitative research design grounded in doctrinal analysis involving the interpretation of legal texts, case law, and principles, to investigate the emerging challenge of GD in India. RESULTS: The analysis interprets Articles 14 and 15 of India's Constitution as foundational protections

Influence of Experiences of Discrimination and Anticipated Discrimination on Cardiovascular Health Outcomes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarizes recent evidence linking experiences of discrimination and anticipated discrimination with cardiovascular health outcomes. RECENT FINDINGS: Experiences of discrimination were consistently associated with increased risk of nicotine exposure, poor sleep health, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and subclinical cardiovascular disease. Evidence is mixed for cardiovascular disease diagnoses and cardiovascular mortality. Although research is limited, anticipated discrimination is an independent risk factor for poor sleep health and subclinical cardiovascular

Drivers of perceived discrimination among older adults in India: an intersectional analysis.

Discrimination is harmful action taken against individuals or groups to protect customary relations of power and privilege. Older adults are particularly vulnerable to experiences of discrimination that adversely affect their quality of life. We use data from the Longitudinal Ageing Study of India (LASI; Wave 1; 2017-2018) to examine different contextual forces that shape the experiences of discrimination in older adults in India, specifically gender, caste, and economic condition. We used the theory of intersectionality to hypothesize that economic condition, caste, and gender combine uniquel

Discrimination against patients from Bangladesh: striking at the heart of medical ethics.

We draw attention to the World Medical Association's (WMA) International Code of Medical Ethics [1] as the benchmark of medical ethics, in the face of inflammatory and discriminatory statements issued by some senior Indian doctors against Bangladeshi patients. These statements followed allegations that the Indian tricolor and Hindus had been insulted in Bangladesh. The Indian mainstream media carried these statements uncritically. The Director of Jitendra Narayan Ray Hospital, Kolkata, Dr Subhrangshu Bhakta, announced that notifications had already been issued by the hospital refusing to admit

A Multilevel Analysis of Social Environmental Factors Related to Substance Use, Tobacco Use, and Binge Drinking Behaviors Among Older Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Social environmental factors are associated with risky health behaviors. However, limited research examines these relationships among older adults and across multiple levels of the social environment. METHODS: This study analyzed data from a 2021 survey of older adults (aged ≥50 years, n=2,774) in the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. Using a socioecologic framework, the social environment was measured at the levels of the individual (loneliness, resilience, perceived discrimination), interpersonal (emotional social support), neighborhood (attraction to neighborhood, acts of neigh

Stigma and discrimination and its homeless and health system contexts in south London: an ethnographic case study.

BACKGROUND: Stigma and discrimination are widely recognised as core social determinants of health. There is a gap in understanding how to intervene at societal and systems level to address stigma. This study aims to theorise how particular care and support systems shape experiences of stigma as it relates to homelessness, and to then develop systems-level interventions. METHODS: We present findings from an ongoing longitudinal ethnographic study, which started June 2022, in south London. Data collection included interviews with people managing, delivering, and using homelessness services (n=4

Gender and Drug Use Discrimination Among People Who Inject Drugs: An Intersectional Approach Using the COSINUS Cohort.

PURPOSE: Injection drug use is strongly associated with stigmatization by loved ones, healthcare providers, and society in general. This stigmatization can have negative consequences on the health of people who inject drugs (PWID) and limit their access to care. Women who inject drugs face greater stigma than men because of gendered social norms and the intersectional effect between gender and drug use identities. For this analysis, we aimed to study discrimination - which is closely linked to stigmatization - experienced by PWID, considering the intersectionality between drug use discriminati
