Dark Skin Evolution in Early Humans: Revisiting the Skin Cancer Hypothesis Through Migration-Related Mismatch.

Cancer as a selective force in human evolution remains largely unexplored in the field of cancer evolution and ecology. In this review, we examine one such proposal about the evolution of skin pigmentation in ancestral humans. The skin cancer hypothesis posits that deaths from sun-induced skin cancers in part favored the evolution of darker skin in early hominins as they dispersed into savanna mosaics. Evolutionary mismatch, where migrants and albinos with fair or extremely pale skin settle in high-UVR environments, has been used to support the hypothesis, but only the case involving albinos h

Respect for males amid suppression of females: Selective use of aggression and fitness correlates in the male-dominated society of hamadryas baboons.

Hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas) are a useful model for human social evolution for multiple reasons, including their multilevel society, intense cross-sex bonds, and intermale tolerance. Their most stable social grouping, the one-male unit (OMU)-comprising a leader male, females, and sometimes follower males-is formed via successive takeovers of individual females by males. While takeovers occur via both aggressive and non-aggressive mechanisms, aggressive herding is common during and after takeovers and appears crucial in maintaining OMUs. Here we use behavioral and demographic data from F

New insights into sodium phenylbutyrate as a pharmacotherapeutic option for neurological disorders.

Neurological disorders (NDs) are diseases of the central and peripheral nervous systems that affect more than one billion people worldwide. The risk of developing an ND increases with age due to the vulnerability of the different organs and systems to genetic, environmental, and social changes that consequently cause motor and cognitive deficits that disable the person from their daily activities and individual and social productivity. Intrinsic factors (genetic factors, age, gender) and extrinsic factors (addictions, infections, or lifestyle) favor the persistence of systemic inflammatory pro

A longitudinal study on the correlation between symptom clusters and disease-specific health status in older adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease during pulmonary rehabilitation.

OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to use a longitudinal design to clarify the dynamic evolution trajectory of symptom clusters in older adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) during pulmonary rehabilitation and to analyze the longitudinal association between the evolution of these symptom clusters and patients' disease-specific health status. METHODS: A prospective longitudinal study design was employed. From January 2025 to September 2025, 184 older COPD patients receiving pulmonary rehabilitation were enrolled. Data were collected at baseline (T0), 4 weeks (T1), and 12 wee

Urban characteristics attributable to density-driven tie formation.

Motivated by empirical evidence on the interplay between geography, population density and societal interaction, we propose a generative process for the evolution of social structure in cities. Our analytical and simulation results predict both super-linear scaling of social-tie density and information contagion as a function of the population. Here we demonstrate that our model provides a robust and accurate fit for the dependency of city characteristics with city-size, ranging from individual-level dyadic interactions (number of acquaintances, volume of communication) to population level var

Kin structure provides no explanation for intruders in social aphids.

Nontraditional social organisms have received increasing attention in recent years, because they present opportunities to study the convergent properties of social evolution. Some aphid species are social, occurring in dense clones with specialized morphs that attack predators and parasites. Little is known about how social aphid colonies resolve conflicts of interest when clonal barriers break down. Pemphigus obesinymphae is a North American gall-forming social aphid that produces both nymphal defenders that protect natal clones, and specialized intruders that invade other nearby clones on th

Cocaine use in Europe: the need for cross-sectoral collaboration between security, justice, health, and social systems.

Cocaine use has increased in Europe over the past decade, raising concerns regarding its associated harms. This increase is driven by the contemporary transformation of the international cocaine supply chain, which has led to increased availability, purity, and use rates. Cocaine use affects both health and society, challenging European countries' health and social care capabilities and models. Addressing these challenges requires multisectoral collaboration to understand the issues better and develop appropriate public health strategies. Integrating security, social, and health policies is th

The oil derivative from it fruit can be classified in different kinds according with their quality, being the highest exponent the so-called pure olive oil that contribute in unquestionable benefits for the maintenance of health, illness prevention as well as a better evolution when the illness is present. There are some studies that prove these benefits in pathologies like cancer specially breast and stomach cancer (colon, endometrium and ovary cancer too). Gastrointe

Sialocutaneous fistula to the external auditory canal repaired with superficial parotidectomy and temporoparietal flap: A case report.

RATIONALE: Gustatory otorrhea can lead to cutaneous changes, recurrent infection, and social disruption. We present a case of a late, evolving sialocutaneous fistula to the external auditory canal, managed surgically after failing conservative therapies. This case is unique by late evolution, whereby the symptoms presented with significance 27 years after her operation and 19 years after mild symptoms initially arose. PATIENT CONCERNS: Gustatory, left-sided clear otorrhea with acutely increased volume over 8 months causing social disruption. DIAGNOSES: Sialocutaneous fistula to the external

Varieties Of Evolved Forms Of Consciousness, Including Mathematical Consciousness.

I shall introduce a complex, apparently unique, cross-disciplinary approach to understanding consciousness, especially ancient forms of mathematical consciousness, based on joint work with Jackie Chappell (Birmingham Biosciences) on the Meta-Configured Genome (MCG) theory. All known forms of consciousness (apart from recent very simple AI forms) are products of biological evolution, in some cases augmented by products of social, or technological evolution. Forms of consciousness differ between organisms with different sensory mechanisms, needs and abilities; and in complex animals can vary acr

Dopamine Neuron Activity and Stress Signaling as Links Between Social Hierarchy and Psychopathology Vulnerability.

BACKGROUND: Social status in humans, generally reflected by socioeconomic status, has been associated, when constrained, with heightened vulnerability to pathologies including psychiatric diseases. Social hierarchy in mice translates into individual and interdependent behavioral strategies of animals within a group. The rules leading to the emergence of a social organization are elusive, and detangling the contribution of social status from other factors, whether environmental or genetic, to normal and pathological behaviors remains challenging. METHODS: We investigated the mechanisms shaping

Stage fright: Why cultural evolution is diversification, not progression.

While interaction and problem-solving shape cultural structure, as the social tinkering framework suggests, stability and erosion too are possible and equally significant outcomes. Navigation and mushroom foraging illustrate how and why sophisticated systems can persist without formal institutions or writing. Recognising diverse trajectories challenges linear stage models and highlights cultural evolution as context-dependent, adaptive, and often intentionally stable.

Group Cooperation without Group Selection: Modest Punishment Can Recruit Much Cooperation.

Humans everywhere cooperate in groups to achieve benefits not attainable by individuals. Individual effort is often not automatically tied to a proportionate share of group benefits. This decoupling allows for free-riding, a strategy that (absent countermeasures) outcompetes cooperation. Empirically and formally, punishment potentially solves the evolutionary puzzle of group cooperation. Nevertheless, standard analyses appear to show that punishment alone is insufficient, because second-order free riders (those who cooperate but do not punish) can be shown to outcompete punishers. Consequently

An economic experiment reveals that humans prefer pool punishment to maintain the commons.

Punishment can stabilize costly cooperation and ensure the success of a common project that is threatened by free-riders. Punishment mechanisms can be classified into pool punishment, where the punishment act is carried out by a paid third party, (e.g. a police system or a sheriff), and peer punishment, where the punishment act is carried out by peers. Which punishment mechanism is preferred when both are concurrently available within a society? In an economic experiment, we show that the majority of subjects choose pool punishment, despite being costly even in the absence of defectors, when s

Health in Seychelles - an overview.

Health in Seychelles has improved significantly over the past three decades, largely as a result of investment not only in the health services, but also in other social sectors that have direct impact on child survival and the health of individuals. Through different stages of the evolution of the health care system there have been close links between health policy and strategy, the overall national development efforts and the wider social and economic environment. Awareness of these links are useful in the understanding of current health issues such as the lifestyle related patterns of morbid

Bigotry and the human-animal divide: (Dis)belief in human evolution and bigoted attitudes across different cultures.

The current investigation tested if people's basic belief in the notion that human beings have developed from other animals (i.e., belief in evolution) can predict human-to-human prejudice and intergroup hostility. Using data from the American General Social Survey and Pew Research Center (Studies 1-4), and from three online samples (Studies 5, 7, 8) we tested this hypothesis across 45 countries, in diverse populations and religious settings, across time, in nationally representative data (N = 60,703), and with more comprehensive measures in online crowdsourced data (N = 2,846). Health education and promotion for STD prevention: lessons for the next millennium.

OBJECTIVE: To review the evolution of health promotion for STD prevention. MAIN OBSERVATIONS: Information and education programmes were provided at the beginning of the 20th century to warn the public about the dangers of venereal infection and to support the medical model of case identification and case management under the care of qualified physicians. The public health approach offered advice about chemical, chemotherapeutic, and barrier prophylaxis, but avoided the issue of social prophylaxis. With the failure of antimicrobial agents to eradicate syphilis in the 1960s, rapid increases of

Does target animacy influence manual laterality of monkeys? First answer from northern pig-tailed macaques (Macaca leonina).

The evolutionary origin of human right-handedness remains unclear. Many factors such as emotion and tool use have been implicated in primate handedness evolution. With regard to emotional lateralization, most related research focuses on facial asymmetry and behavioral laterality under the non-social context, whereas few studies investigate social laterality. This study, for the first time, investigates the effect of target animacy on hand preference in Old World monkeys, compares our findings with previous related studies in great apes and humans, and aids in filling the knowledge gap on prima

Trajectory and outcomes of speech language therapy in the Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS): case report.

The aim of this study was to describe the trajectory and the outcomes of speech-language therapy in Prader-Willi syndrome through a longitudinal study of the case of an 8 year-old boy, along four years of speech-language therapy follow-up. The therapy sessions were filmed and documental analysis of information from the child's records regarding anamnesis, evaluation and speech-language therapy reports and multidisciplinary evaluations were carried out. The child presented typical characteristics of Prader-Willi syndrome, such as obesity, hyperfagia, anxiety, behavioral problems and self aggres

Evolution expresses the second law of thermodynamics in action.

Evolution through natural selection has long been considered unique to biological systems, yet similar patterns emerge from physical, chemical, technological, economic and social processes. Skewed distributions, often near-lognormal, and sigmoidal courses, often with a power-law central region, recur across scales and scopes, making no distinction between living and non-living. This ubiquity suggests that evolution, in all its manifestations, expresses a universal principle. The second law of thermodynamics, derived from the statistical physics of open systems, explains the recurrent patterns:
