Social and emotional factors as predictors of poor outcomes following cardiac surgery.

OBJECTIVES: Existing risk prediction models in cardiac surgery stratify individuals based on their predicted risk, including only medical and physiological factors. However, the complex nature of risk assessment and the lack of parameters representing non-medical aspects of patients' lives point towards the need for a broader paradigm in cardiac surgery. Objectives were to evaluate the predictive value of emotional and social factors on 4 outcomes; death within 90 days, prolonged stay in intensive care (≥72 h), prolonged hospital admission (≥10 days) and readmission within 90 days following ca

Social behaviors and HIV risk factors among men in Chad and Cameroon.

INTRODUCTION: the neighboring Republics of Chad and Cameroon have respectively one of the lowest and highest HIV prevalence rates in central Africa at 1.3% and 4.5%, respectively. We conducted a comparative description of social behaviors and HIV risk factors among heterosexual men and explored the baseline of the first UNAIDS target (by 2020, 90% of people living with HIV will know their status) in the two countries. METHODS: this was a retrospective cross-sectional study using Demographic and Health Survey data. We fitted a separate multilevel logistic model for each country. In total, 5248

Social & psychological factors associated with oral analgesic use in knee osteoarthritis management.

OBJECTIVE: Determine modifiable social and psychological health factors that are associated with use of oral opioid and non-opioid medications for OA. METHODS: Patients were categorized based on use of the following oral medications: opioids (with/without other oral analgesic treatments), non-opioid analgesics, and no oral analgesic treatment. We used multinomial logistic regression models to estimate adjusted relative risk ratios (RRRs) of using an opioid or a non-opioid analgesic (vs. no oral analgesic treatment), comparing patients by levels of social support (Medical Outcomes Study scale)

Social Factors Related to the Utilization of Health Care Among Prison Inmates.

This study examines the demographic and social factors related to health care utilization in prisons using the 2004 Survey of Inmates in State Correctional Facilities. The findings show that education and employment, strong predictors of health care in the community, are not associated with health care in prisons. Although female inmates have a higher disease burden than male inmates, there are no sex differences in health care usage. The factors associated with health care, however, vary for women and men. Notably, Black men are significantly more likely to utilize health care compared to Whi

Beyond resistance: social factors in the general public response to pandemic influenza.

BACKGROUND: Influencing the general public response to pandemics is a public health priority. There is a prevailing view, however, that the general public is resistant to communications on pandemic influenza and that behavioural responses to the 2009/10 H1N1 pandemic were not sufficient. Using qualitative methods, this paper investigates how members of the general public respond to pandemic influenza and the hygiene, social isolation and other measures proposed by public health. Going beyond the commonly deployed notion that the general public is resistant to public health communications, this

Suicide by jumping from bridges and other heights: social and diagnostic factors.

The goal of the study was to determine social and diagnostic characteristics of persons who end their lives by jumping from heights and to compare the characteristics of those who jump from bridges with those jumping from other sites. Data on suicide in Switzerland between 1990 and 2003 were collected from the Swiss Federal Statistical Office and from local authorities. Persons who jumped from heights in general were more likely to suffer from schizophrenia than those who used other methods. Persons who jumped from bridges were younger than those committing suicide by other methods. Compared w

Social anxiety and peer relations in early adolescence: behavioral and cognitive factors.

This study investigated factors associated with social anxiety during early adolescence using multiple informants, including self and peer perspectives, teacher ratings, and direct observations. Negative social performance expectations, maladaptive coping strategies, and social skill deficits were examined as correlates of social anxiety and mediators linking social anxiety with poor peer relations. Participants were 84 middle school students (47 girls, 37 boys) over-sampled for elevated social anxiety. Analyses revealed correlations linking social anxiety with decreased peer acceptance and in

Coping with a possible breast cancer diagnosis: demographic factors and social support.

AIM: This paper reports a study examining the relationships between demographic characteristics, social support, anxiety, coping and defence among women with possible breast cancer. BACKGROUND: Awaiting a possible breast cancer diagnosis is an anxiety-provoking situation that demands coping. Social support and demographic characteristics have been reported to influence coping and well-being, but the interconnection is insufficiently understood. DESIGN: A survey design was used, and self-administrated questionnaires were returned by a convenience sample of 117 women in Norway who had undergon

Social and psychosocial factors predicting depression in old age: a longitudinal study.

The predictive value of social and psychosocial factors for the occurrence of depression in elderly Finns is described using a longitudinal design. A population determined as not being depressed in an epidemiological study in 1984-1985 was clinically interviewed and examined in a follow-up study in 1989-1990 (N = 679). The potential predictive factors for depression were analyzed by contrasting the persons depressed in 1989-1990 with the ones not depressed. In men, depression was predicted by a poor relationship with one's wife and feelings about low appreciation of old persons or of the parti

French survey of postpolio sequelae. Risk factors study and medical social outcome.

For 10 yr, numerous studies have been conducted to try to explain the further deterioration of the sequelae from a previous, acute poliomyelitis. The different etiologic hypotheses, which have been put forward, have not been confirmed yet. A retrospective study has been completed by mailed questionnaires sent to 360 patients previously affected by acute polio; 248 polio survivors replied. Deterioration, as functional loss especially during walking and exertion, was reported by 77% of our respondents. Among the newly affected cases, 60% have given up or slowed down their socio-professional acti

Psychosocial factors, alcohol use, and hangover signs among social drinkers: a reappraisal.

To reappraise a prior study of hangover signs and psychosocial factors among a sample of current drinkers, we excluded a subgroup termed Sobers, who report "never" being "tipsy, high or drunk." The non-sober current drinkers then formed the sample for this report (N = 1104). About 23% of this group reported no hangover signs regardless of their intake level or gender, and the rest showed no sex differences for any of 8 hangover signs reported. Using multiple regression, including ethanol, age and weight, it was found that psychosocial variables contributed independently in predicting to hangov

Social and behavioral factors associated with high-risk sexual behavior among adolescents.

Relationships among risky sexual behaviors, other problem behaviors, and the family and peer context were examined for two samples of adolescents. Many adolescents reported behaviors (e.g., promiscuity or nonuse of condoms) which risked HIV or other sexually transmitted disease infection. Such risky behaviors were significantly intercorrelated. Consistent condom use was rare among those whose behavior otherwise entailed the greatest risk of infection. In both samples, an index of high-risk sexual behavior was significantly related to antisocial behavior, cigarette smoking, and illicit drug or

The Impact of Socioeconomic Factors on Cognitive Ability in Community-Dwelling Older Adults: Mediating Effect of Social Participation and Social Support.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Previous studies have shown that socioeconomic status influences cognitive health in adults. Therefore, it is important for the development of healthy aging policies to further investigate the effect of specific socioeconomic factors on cognitive function in older people and the possible mechanism. In this study, three specific socioeconomic factors (i.e., income, occupation, and education) were used as independent variables, and social support and social participation were used as the parallel or serial mediating variables to investigate the effect on cognitive functio

SPINning factors: factor analytic evaluation of the Social Phobia Inventory in clinical and nonclinical undergraduate samples.

The Social Phobia Inventory (SPIN) was designed to assess three dimensions of social anxiety (i.e., fear, avoidance, and physiological arousal) as posited by the scale authors (Connor et al., 2000). Despite expectations of a 3-factor solution, analyses of the SPIN to date have provided support for 3- and 5-factor solutions (Radomsky et al., 2006). Moreover, a 3-item version, the Mini-SPIN (Connor et al., 2001), has good sensitivity and specificity for generalized social anxiety disorder (SAD), implying some item redundancy. Another recent psychometric analysis of the SPIN was performed in a di

The Influence of Social Support and Social Integration Factors on Return to Work Outcomes for Individuals with Work-Related Injuries: A Systematic Review.

Purpose In occupational rehabilitation, the biopsychosocial model endorses the role of social factors in worker recovery. We conducted a systematic review to explore three questions examining the role of social support for the return-to-work (RTW) of individuals with work-related injury: (1) What are the worker-identified social barriers and facilitators in RTW; (2) What is the relationship between social factors and RTW; and (3) What is the effectiveness of social interventions for RTW. Methods Systematic searches of six databases were conducted for each research question. These identified 11
