Suicidal thoughts and behaviors and social isolation: A narrative review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Social isolation is one of the main risk factors associated with suicidal outcomes. The aim of this narrative review was to provide an overview on the link between social isolation and suicidal thoughts and behaviors. METHODS: We used the PubMed database to identify relevant articles published until April 13, 2018. We focused on: (a) systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and narrative reviews; (b) original observational studies with large samples (N ≥ 500); and (c) qualitative studies. We included all relevant suicidal outcomes: suicidal ideation (SI), suicidal planning, non-suicidal

Cardiac and behavioral effects of social isolation and experimental manipulation of autonomic balance.

Improved understanding of how depression and social isolation interact to increase cardiac morbidity and mortality will improve public health. This experiment evaluated the effect of pharmacological autonomic blockade on cardiac and behavioral reactivity following social isolation in prairie voles. Experiment 1 validated the dose and time course of pharmacological autonomic antagonism of peripheral β-adrenergic (atenolol) and muscarinic cholinergic receptors (atropine methyl nitrate), and Experiment 2 used a novel protocol to investigate behavioral responses in the tail suspension test during

Social isolation alters ultrasonic vocalizations but not thyroarytenoid neuromuscular junctions in old rats.

OBJECTIVE: Age-related muscle atrophy of the laryngeal muscles contributes to presbyphonia. Remodeling of the neuromuscular junction is one aspect underlying age-related muscle atrophy. Although muscle disuse has been shown to exacerbate age-related neuromuscular changes in the limb muscles, it is unknown if reduced vocal use has a similar effect in the laryngeal muscles. The objective of this study was to examine the use of social isolation as a novel method to reduce vocal use in old rats-and the impact of that reduced vocal use on ultrasonic vocalization acoustics and neuromuscular junction

Early social isolation impairs development, mate choice and grouping behaviour of predatory mites.

The social environment early in life is a key determinant of developmental, physiological and behavioural trajectories across vertebrate and invertebrate animals. One crucial variable is the presence/absence of conspecifics. For animals usually reared in groups, social isolation after birth or hatching can be a highly stressful circumstance, with potentially long-lasting consequences. Here, we assessed the effects of social deprivation (isolation) early in life, that is, absence of conspecifics, versus social enrichment, that is, presence of conspecifics, on developmental time, body size at ma

Enhancement of social isolation-induced aggressive behavior of young mice by zinc deficiency.

Neuropsychological behavior via activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis was analyzed using young mice fed a zinc-deficient diet for 2 weeks. Serum corticosterone concentration was significantly increased after 2-week zinc deprivation, whereas zinc concentration in the brain was not decreased. In the resident-intruder test, the rate of mice that exhibited aggressive behavior to the total mice was significantly higher in isolated zinc-deficient mice than in isolated control mice. The duration of aggressive behavior was more in isolated zinc-deficient mice. These results indic

Social isolation and intrinsic capacity among older Hispanic adults in the United States: Exploring associations across geographic and social contexts.

OBJECTIVES: We examined the association between social isolation (SI) and intrinsic capacity (IC) among older Hispanic adults in the United States and explored patterns of association across geographic and social subgroups. METHODS: Using 2022 Health and Retirement Study data, we analyzed 615 Hispanic adults aged ≥60 years. IC (0-10) was derived from five domains, and SI (0-4) was measured using a composite index. Survey-weighted linear regression models were used to estimate the overall association between SI and IC. Exploratory interaction models and subgroup-specific analyses examined patt

The effects of social isolation and problematic social media use on well-being in a sample of young Italian gamblers.

INTRODUCTION: Gambling, especially when problematic, has been observed to have a significant impact on mental health, social relationships, and well-being in general. Social isolation and problematic social media use (PSMU) have also been identified as risk factors affecting psychological well-being, with a potential link to gambling that may intensify the impact on well-being, especially among adolescents. However, the interaction between these factors remains poorly explored, especially in younger populations. This study aims to investigate the effects of social isolation and problematic soc

Social Connectedness, Perceived Isolation, and Dementia: Does the Social Environment Moderate the Relationship Between Genetic Risk and Cognitive Well-Being?

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: This study examined whether the social environment moderates the relationship between the APOE e4 allele and cognitive functioning. DESIGN AND METHODS: The Aging, Demographics, and Memory Study (ADAMS) data and multinomial logistic regression models were used to investigate these relationships for a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults aged 70 and older (n = 779). RESULTS: Living alone (relative risk ratio [RRR] = 5.814; p = .000) and self-reported loneliness (RRR = 1.928, p = .049) were associated with a greater risk of cognitive difficulty. Living arrangeme

Environmental enrichment during social isolation prevents behavioral impairments and morphological alterations of the midcingulate cortex in aggressive socially isolated mice.

Social isolation (SI) in rodents affects neuronal integrity and behavioral regulation. On the other hand, enriched environment (EE) has been reported to yield beneficial behavioral and neural effects in group-housed rodents. The midcingulate cortex (MCC) is a brain region that is increasingly implicated in socioemotional regulation; however, whether SI induces structural alterations in this region, and whether EE can mitigate such effects, remains unclear. In the present study, we examined the behavioral consequences of SI and the associated dendritic alterations in MCC pyramidal neurons. Furt

Social Media engagement and perceived social isolation among older adults in a changing digital environment: evidence from HINTS 2022-2024.

BACKGROUND: The rapid expansion of social media and emerging artificial intelligence (AI)-mediated digital environments has transformed how older adults communicate, access information, and engage with online communities. Social media platforms may provide opportunities for social connectedness and emotional support, particularly among older adults who face mobility limitations, retirement-related social changes, or reduced in-person interactions. At the same time, increased reliance on digital environments may also contribute to perceived social isolation through social comparison, exposure t

Involvement of dopaminergic and cholinergic systems in social isolation-induced deficits in social affiliation and conditional fear memory in mice.

Post-weaning social isolation rearing (SI) in rodents elicits various behavioral abnormalities including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder-like behaviors. In order to obtain a better understanding of SI-induced behavioral abnormalities, we herein investigated the effects of SI on social affiliation and conditioned fear memory as well as the neuronal mechanism(s) underlying these effects. Four-week-old male mice were group-housed (GH) or socially isolated for 2-4 weeks before the experiments. The social affiliation test and fear memory conditioning were conducted at the age of 6 and 7 we

Effects of dopamine agonists and antagonists on PCP-induced stereotyped behaviour and social isolation in the rat social interaction test.

Phencyclidine (PCP) can induce a model psychosis in humans that resembles an acute schizophrenic psychosis. In animal models of schizophrenia, PCP induces locomotor hyperactivity, stereotyped behaviour and social isolation, and the purpose of the present study was to describe the ability of dopamine agonists and antagonists to mimic or interact with these PCP-induced behaviours in rats. The compounds were administered daily for 3 days in combination with vehicle or 2.0 mg/kg PCP and the rats were tested in the social interaction test on the last day of drug administration. The study showed tha

Unravelling longitudinal associations of social and emotional loneliness with social isolation and mental health outcomes: a cross-lagged panel network analysis.

AIMS: Loneliness is a global public health concern that has been widely associated with a variety of mental health impairments. Two dimensions of loneliness have been differentiated, that is, social loneliness (the perceived absence or inadequacy of a broader social network) and emotional loneliness (the perceived absence of a close, intimate relationship or emotional support from a significant person). The present study aimed to test the hypothesis that both dimensions of loneliness are differentially associated with mental health outcomes. METHODS: Altogether, 3275 individuals (aged 45.2 ±

Social isolation and health risks: Do the younger generations behave differently? Findings from the European Social Survey (Round 11 - 2023/2024).

Social isolation has long been recognized as a determinant of poor health, particularly in older adults. However, its effects on young people remain underexplored. This study investigates how different dimensions of social isolation affect health-related behaviors among different generations (Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z), including physical inactivity, tobacco and alcohol consumption, and body mass index as dependent variables. Using cross-sectional data from Round 11 of the European Social Survey, we analyze a sample of individuals from 24 Euro

Effects of diazepam, citalopram, methadone and naloxone on PCP-induced stereotyped behaviour and social isolation in the rat social interaction test.

Phencyclidine (PCP) can induce a model psychosis in humans that mimics the positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia. In the social interaction test PCP induces stereotyped behaviour and social isolation in rats, and these behaviours can be inhibited by antipsychotic drugs. In order to further evaluate the predictive validity of this model of schizophrenia the anxiolytic diazepam (0.02-17.5 micromol/kg; 0.005-5.0 mg/kg), the antidepressant citalopram (0.62-19.8 micromol/kg; 0.3-4.0 mg/kg), the opioid agonist methadone (0.36-5.8 micromol/kg; 0.13-2.0 mg/kg) and the opioid antagonist nalox
