Help seeking for antibiotics; is the influence of a personal social network relevant?

BACKGROUND: Health policy focuses on reducing antibiotic prescribing that in order to succeed requires the public to hold similar attitudes towards judicious use. Social network influences on health behaviour and attitudes are well established and yet these influences are not sufficiently acknowledged in the UK's antibiotic stewardship programmes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate individuals' attitudes and behaviours towards antibiotics and also identify the social network influences on these in the process of help seeking for self-limiting illnesses. METHODS: From a social ne

The neural representation of social status in the extended face-processing network.

Social status is a salient cue that shapes our perceptions of other people and ultimately guides our social interactions. Despite the pervasive influence of status on social behavior, how information about the status of others is represented in the brain remains unclear. Here, we tested the hypothesis that social status information is embedded in our neural representations of other individuals. Participants learned to associate faces with names, job titles that varied in associated status, and explicit markers of reputational status (star ratings). Trained stimuli were presented in an function

Childhood Trauma, Social Networks, and the Mental Health of Adult Survivors.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of childhood trauma to the quality of social networks and health outcomes later in adulthood. Data were obtained from a convenience sample of 254 adults seen in one of 10 primary care clinics in the state of Texas. Standardized measures of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), stressful and supportive social relationships, medical conditions, anxiety, depression, and health-related quality of life were administered. Using latent class analysis, subjects were assigned to one of four ACE classes: (a) minimal childhood abuse (56%), (b)

Social support networks among diverse sexual minority populations.

This article reports a study of the function and composition of social support networks among diverse lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) men and women (n = 396) in comparison to their heterosexual peers (n = 128). Data were collected using a structured social support network matrix in a community sample recruited in New York City. Our findings show that gay and bisexual men may rely on "chosen families" more than lesbian and bisexual women. Both heterosexuals and LGBs relied less on family and more on other people (e.g., friends, coworkers) for everyday social support (e.g., recreational and soc

The Social Networks of Homeless Youth Experiencing Intimate Partner Violence.

While there is a growing body of research on intimate partner violence (IPV) experienced by the housed youth population, a limited amount is known about IPV experienced by homeless youth. To our knowledge, no previous studies have examined how homeless youths' experience of IPV is related to their social network, even though the social networks of homeless youth have been shown to be significant indicators of health and mental health. The purpose of this study is to understand the relationship between IPV, gender, and social networks among a sample of 386 homeless youth in Los Angeles, Califor

Increased cortical thickness in a frontoparietal network in social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is the second leading anxiety disorder. On the functional neurobiological level, specific brain regions involved in the processing of anxiety-laden stimuli and in emotion regulation have been shown to be hyperactive and hyper-responsive in SAD such as amygdala, insula and orbito- and prefrontal cortex. On the level of brain structure, prior studies on anatomical differences in SAD resulted in mixed and partially contradictory findings. Based on previous functional and anatomical models of SAD, this study examined cortical thickness in structural magnetic resonance

At the edge? HIV stigma and centrality in a community's social network in Namibia.

Social network analysis was used to examine the relationship between HIV/AIDS stigmatization, perceived risk, and centrality in the community network (via participation in community groups). The findings from respondents in Keetmanshoop, Namibia (N = 375) showed an interaction between stigma and risk perceptions\hose who perceived higher HIV risk and stronger HIV stigma participated in fewer community groups and participated in groups with members who participated less widely across the network. In contrast, those who perceived higher HIV risk and weaker HIV stigma participated more, and were

Integration of Spatial and Social Network Analysis in Disease Transmission Studies.

This study presents a case study of how social network and spatial analytical methods can be used simultaneously for disease transmission modeling. The paper first reviews strategies employed in previous studies and then offers the example of transmission of two bacterial diarrheal diseases in rural Bangladesh. The goal is to understand how diseases vary socially above and beyond the effects of the local neighborhood context. Patterns of cholera and shigellosis incidence are analyzed in space and within kinship-based social networks in Matlab, Bangladesh. Data include a spatially referenced lo

Dissociation of neural networks for anticipation and consumption of monetary and social rewards.

Human behaviour is generally guided by the anticipation of potential outcomes that are considered to be rewarding. Reward processing can thus be dissected into a phase of reward anticipation and a phase of reward consumption. A number of brain structures have been suggested to be involved in reward processing. However, it is unclear whether anticipation and consumption are mediated by the same or different neural networks. We examined the neural basis of these processes using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in an incentive delay task offering either money or social approval. In bo

Prospective data were analyzed to examine individual and social network characteristics that predict entry into drug treatment among a sample of 557 heroin and cocaine users. Entering treatment was associated with being HIV positive [AOR: 2.25, 95% CI: 1.33-3.81] and a history of drug treatment [AOR: 3.41, 95% CI: 2.19-5.31]. Individuals with a greater number of social network members who were in drug treatment [AOR: 1.29, 95% CI: 1.07-1.56] and fewer network members who smoked crack [AOR: 0.86, 95% CI: 0.75-0.99] were more likely to enter treatment. Social experience organizes parallel networks in sensory and limbic forebrain.

Successful social behavior can directly influence an individual's reproductive success. Therefore, many organisms readily modify social behavior based on past experience. The neural changes induced by social experience, however, remain to be fully elucidated. We hypothesize that social modulation of neural systems not only occurs at the level of individual nuclei, but also of functional networks, and their relationships with behavior. We used the green anole lizard (Anolis carolinensis), which displays stereotyped, visually triggered social behaviors particularly suitable for comparisons of mu

Families with disabled children: stress and social networks in three samples.

Mothers and fathers of 125 handicapped/chronically ill children were compared with parents of 127 matched nondisabled children from three separate samples with respect to personal stress, marital satisfaction, and social network size and density. Only mothers of disabled children experienced higher levels of stress than comparison parents. No differences were found in marital satisfaction. Few group differences were found for social network variables, although mothers of handicapped children had higher-density networks than comparison mothers. A series of ANOVAs examined differences among the

The structure and function of social support networks in families with handicapped children.

Three structural characteristics of social support networks (size, density, and boundary density) and two relationship characteristics (reciprocity and dimensionality) were assessed in a sample of 56 families with a child with spina bifida and 53 matched comparison families. The results indicate that social networks of families with handicapped children tended to be smaller than the networks of comparison families, particularly with regard to mothers' total and friendship networks. The networks of families with handicapped children were more dense as well. As predicted, there was greater bound

Neighborhood social cohesion and psychological distress among caregiving spouses with or without a nearby social support network.

BACKGROUND: Caregiving spouses often experience substantial physical and emotional strain, placing them at elevated risk for psychological distress. While nearby social support networks and neighborhood social cohesion have each been linked to caregiver well-being, neighborhood social cohesion may serve as a complementary resource, particularly for those without nearby social support. However, little is known about whether the association between neighborhood social cohesion and psychological distress varies depending on the availability of nearby social support among caregiving spouses. Smartphone technology, social network maintenance, and social participation among Mandarin-speaking older immigrants in Canada.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The rapid global expansion of digital technologies has reshaped everyday life across generations, yet the role of smartphones in older immigrants' social well-being remains insufficiently understood. Drawing on the sociotechnical perspective that ageing and technology are co-constituted; our study examines how Mandarin-speaking older immigrants in Canada use smartphones to overcome social isolation and sustain social participation. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Data were obtained from 102 qualitative interviews conducted across seven Canadian cities as part of the In

Social class identity and mental health in emerging adults: The mediating roles of greenspace and spatial social networks.

Emerging adulthood is a critical developmental period often marked by elevated vulnerability to mental health challenges, including depressive symptoms and psychological distress (PD). Understanding how social, environmental, and digitally embedded factors interact to shape mental health during this stage is essential for developing effective interventions. This study examines the relationships between social class identity (SCI), green space utilization (GSU), spatial social networks (SSN), and mental health outcomes among 2413 U.S. emerging adults aged 18-29 years, using cross-sectional surv

Revealing the Hidden Social Structure of Pigs with AI-Assisted Automated Monitoring Data and Social Network Analysis.

Background: The social interactions of farm animals affect their performance, health and welfare. This proof-of-concept study addresses, for the first time, the hypothesis that applying social network analysis (SNA) on AI-automated monitoring data could potentially facilitate the analysis of social structures of farm animals. Methods: Data were collected using automated recording systems that captured 2D-camera images and videos of pigs in six pens (16-19 animals each) on a PIC breeding company farm (USA). The system provided real-time data, including ear-tag readings, elapsed time, posture (s

Visualizing the Influence of Social Networks on Recovery: A Mixed-Methods Social Identity Mapping Study with Recovering Adolescents.

Background: Social recovery capital (SRC) refers to resources and supports gained through relationships and is vital to adolescent addiction recovery. Much is known about how substance use relates to social networks, but little is known about how other dimensions of social networks influence recovery (e.g., network size/exposure, degree of conflict). Methods: This mixed-methods study sampled 28 adolescents who received treatment for alcohol and other drug (AOD) use disorder (14-19 yrs.: 71% male; M = 17.32 yrs., SD = 1.33; White 82%): 20 were recovery high school (RHS) students.
