Passive Coping Strategies During Repeated Social Defeat Are Associated With Long-Lasting Changes in Sleep in Rats.

Exposure to severe stress has immediate and prolonged neuropsychiatric consequences and increases the risk of developing Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Importantly, PTSD develops in only a subset of individuals after exposure to a traumatic event, with the understanding of this selective vulnerability being very limited. Individuals who go on to develop PTSD after a traumatic experience typically demonstrate sleep disturbances including persistent insomnia and recurrent trauma-related nightmares. We previously established a repeated social defeat paradigm in which rats segregate into ei

Independent and joint contributions of economic, social and physical environmental characteristics to mortality in the Detroit Metropolitan Area: A study of cumulative effects and pathways.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have demonstrated associations between race-based residential segregation, neighborhood socioeconomic and physical environmental characteristics, and mortality. Relatively few studies have examined independent and joint effects of these multiple neighborhood characteristics and mortality, including potential mediating pathways. In this study we examine the extent to which associations between race-based residential segregation and all-cause mortality may be explained by multiple socioeconomic indicators and exposure to air pollutants. METHODS: Drawing on data from

The Impact of Social Determinants of Health on Ocular Diseases in Western New York: A Comparative Ecological Study of Two U.S. Counties.

Background/Objectives: As the world becomes more connected, it is becoming critical for clinicians to understand other cultures, races, and ethnicities to provide the most effective therapy. A comprehensive understanding of all communities necessitates an examination of the social determinants of health (SDH). Eye diseases and many other conditions are influenced by SDH. To elucidate the impact of SDH on eye health, a comparative ecological analysis of Monroe and Erie Counties in New York State was conducted to identify any differences in SDH and glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD

Genetics, geography and intelligence in the torsion dystonias.

Personal study of 137 individuals with torsion dystonia (TD) in 92 families, and review of 476 reported cases indicate that there are at least two hereditary forms of TD in addition to acquired dystonia. Autosomal recessive TD, with onset generally between the ages of 4 and 16 and rapid initial course, has been found in highest frequency in the Askenazim. Autosomal dominant dystonia is more variable in its time of onset and course and torticollis is frequently an early symptom. Families with this form are present in several populations. The psychometric performance of patients with autosomal r

Mating-Induced Behavioral Changes in Female Drosophila Are Modulated by Serotonin.

Mating influences the physiology of female animals and induces changes in behaviors associated with securing resources for their offspring. Modulatory neurotransmitters are known to adjust behavioral responses of animals according to environmental cues and internal physiological states. In that regard, it has been shown that serotonin (5-HT) modulates some post-mating behavioral features in Drosophila. However, it remains unknown whether serotonin regulates post-mating social behavior or responses to food cues in flies, which are among several behaviors that serve to secure their survival and

City streetscapes and neighborhood characteristics of fatal opioid overdoses among people experiencing homelessness who use drugs in New York City, 2017-2019.

BACKGROUND: While housing is a critical social determinant of nonprescription opioid overdose, little is known about how place impacts fatal overdose for people experiencing homelessness (PEH) who use drugs beyond the public versus private domains. This study investigated patterns of neighborhood environment features at locations of fatal overdoses among PEH. METHODS: We remotely visited locations of opioid-involved fatal overdoses provided by the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, 2017-2019 (n=3276), with Google Street View and used systematic social observation to assess ch

Effect of Social Determinants of Health on Cognition and Risk of Alzheimer Disease and Related Dementias.

Social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, work, live, and age and the wider set of forces and systems that shape the conditions of daily life. They affect every area of life, particularly health and health care. There is increasing focus on modifiable factors that affect cognition and risk of Alzheimer disease and related dementias (ADRDs). This article examines the impact of various social determinants of health, which are potentially reversible, on the incidence, prevalence, and risk of ADRDs and cognition. Various social determinants of health affect cogniti

Educational neighbourhoods in Vienna: A promising model to enhance educational opportunities and learning spaces through collaboration?

Collaboration structures across relevant partners in education are associated with the potential to address contextual barriers to all learners' presence, participation, and achievement. Following these ideas, a newly introduced educational policy in Vienna, the so-called Bildungsgrätzl (educational neighbourhoods), aims to foster long-term cooperative structures between schools and neighbourhood institutions (e.g. leisure facilities and communities). This study explored the perspectives of 14 local stakeholders, school leaders, and informal leaders on policy translation, following the criteri

Social and Structural Challenges to Drug Cessation Among Couples in Northern Mexico: Implications for Drug Treatment in Underserved Communities.

BACKGROUND: Available drug treatment modalities may inadequately address social and structural contexts surrounding recovery efforts. METHODS: This mixed methods analysis drew on (1) surveys with female sex workers and their intimate male partners and (2) semi-structured interviews with a subsample of 41 couples (n=82 individuals, 123 total interviews) in Northern Mexico. Descriptive and content analyses examined drug cessation and treatment experiences. RESULTS: Perceived need for drug treatment was high, yet only 35% had ever accessed services. Long-term segregation and seclusion for people with an intellectual disability and/or autism in hospitals: critique of the current state of affairs.

In November 2023, the Department of Health and Social Care published guidance, entitled 'Baroness Hollins' Final Report: My Heart Breaks - Solitary Confinement in Hospital Has no Therapeutic Benefit for People with a Learning Disability and Autistic People'. The report's commendable analysis of the problems and identification of the areas where practice should be improved is unfortunately not matched by many of its recommendations, which appear to be contrary to evidence-based approaches. The concerns are wide-ranging, from the use of the term 'solitary confinement' for current long-term segre

The importance of mutual positive expressivity in social adjustment: understanding the role of peers and gender.

The relations between young children's mutual (reciprocated) and overall positive emotion (PE) with same- and other-gender peers and their social adjustment were explored. Children's PE and peers' PE were observed across the preschool year during peer interactions (N = 166; 46% girls; M age = 52 months). Results revealed that girls and boys had similar frequencies of overall PE and mutual PE when interacting with same-gender peers, but girls were marginally higher compared with boys in overall and mutual PE when interacting with other-gender peers. Girls and boys did not have greater rates of

Associations of neighborhood sociodemographic environment with mortality and circulating metabolites among low-income black and white adults living in the southeastern United States.

BACKGROUND: Residing in a disadvantaged neighborhood has been linked to increased mortality. However, the impact of residential segregation and social vulnerability on cause-specific mortality is understudied. Additionally, the circulating metabolic correlates of neighborhood sociodemographic environment remain unexplored. Therefore, we examined multiple neighborhood sociodemographic metrics, i.e., neighborhood deprivation index (NDI), residential segregation index (RSI), and social vulnerability index (SVI), with all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer-specific mortality and cir

Bipolar disorders and narcissism: Diagnostic concerns, conceptual commonalities and potential antecedents.

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) and the manic and hypomanic episodes found in the bipolar disorders are characterized by grandiosity. It is possible that this shared grandiosity is a 'homologous structure' or reflects a superficial similarity between two disparate conditions. It is, however, possible that NPD and the bipolar disorders are more closely related than implied by their segregation into the separate superordinate categories of personality disorders and mood disorders. Whereas narcissism is considered to be a life-course, stable trait and the bipolar disorders are characteriz

"Inside These Fences Is Our Own Little World": Prison-Based HIV Testing and HIV-Related Stigma Among Incarcerated Men and Women.

Correctional facilities offer opportunities to provide comprehensive HIV services including education, testing, treatment, and coordination of post- release care. However, these services may be undermined by unaddressed HIV stigma. As part of a prison-based HIV testing study, we interviewed 76 incarcerated men and women from the North Carolina State prison system. The sample was 72% men, median age 31.5 years (range: 19 to 60). Thematic analysis revealed high levels of HIV-related fear and stigma, homophobia, incomplete HIV transmission knowledge, beliefs that HIV is highly contagious within p

Genetic and genomic perspective to understand the molecular pathogenesis of keratoconus.

Keratoconus (KC; Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) 14830) is a bilateral, progressive corneal defect affecting all ethnic groups around the world. It is the leading cause of corneal transplantation. The age of onset is at puberty, and the disorder is progressive until the 3 rd -4 th decade of life when it usually arrests. It is one of the major ocular problems with significant social and economic impacts as the disease affects young generation. Although genetic and environmental factors are associated with KC, but the precise etiology is still elusive. Results from complex segregation analys

A null findings study: graph theoretical analysis of the fetal functional connectome shows no relationships with future autistic traits.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition, with ex vivo studies suggesting its neurobiological origin as early as the first and second trimester of pregnancy. Functional MRI studies using graph-theoretical approaches have isolated features in the global connectome architecture that distinguish toddlers with ASD from their typically developing peers. Additionally, functional connectivity patterns in the infant brain have shown to be predictive of later ASD diagnosis. An important yet unexplored question in the literature is whether graph-theoretical differences are eviden

The color of health: how racism, segregation, and inequality affect the health and well-being of preterm infants and their families.

Racism, segregation, and inequality contribute to health outcomes and drive health disparities across the life course, including for newborn infants and their families. In this review, we address their effects on the health and well-being of newborn infants and their families with a focus on preterm birth. We discuss three causal pathways: increased risk; lower-quality care; and socioeconomic disadvantages that persist into infancy, childhood, and beyond. For each pathway, we propose specific interventions and research priorities that may remedy the adverse effects of racism, segregation, and

A call to leverage a health equity lens to accelerate human neuroscience research.

Investigation of health inequities tend to be examined, in human neurosciences, as biological factors at the level of the individual. In actuality, health inequities arise, due largely in part, to deep-seated structural factors. Structural inequality refers to the systemic disadvantage of one social group compared to others with whom they coexist. The term encompasses policy, law, governance, and culture and relates to race, ethnicity, gender or gender identity, class, sexual orientation, and other domains. These structural inequalities include but are not limited to social segregation, the in
