Friend and Confidant Thresholds: Social Network Size as a Mediator Between Marital Status and Major Depressive Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Marriage rates are declining globally, a trend particularly notable in South Korea, where demographic shifts raise concerns about social well-being. While marital status is consistently linked to mental health, the extent to which social network size mediates the association between marital status and depression, particularly among contemporary Korean women, remains insufficiently understood. METHODS: We analyzed 5443 Korean women aged 40 or older from the Korean Mood Disorder Genetic Study-Depression (KOMOGEN-D) study (2394 recurrent major depressive disorder [MDD]; 3049 controls

Social disruption after cancer: longitudinal changes in marital status, residence, and income among over 450,000 cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: The impact of cancer extends beyond clinical outcomes, often disrupting interpersonal relationships and living situations. Although these social factors are important for survivorship, little is known about how marital status, residential urbanicity, and income change over time for cancer patients. METHODS: Using SEER 17, we obtained data from 457,058 adults diagnosed with multiple primary cancers from 2000 to 2021 and evaluated changes in marital status, urbanicity, and household income between the first and last recorded diagnoses. Analyses were stratified by follow-up interval

Love after lockup: examining the role of marriage, social status, and financial stress among formerly incarcerated individuals.

BACKGROUND: Upon reintegration into society, formerly incarcerated individuals (FIIs) experience chronic financial stress due to prolonged unemployment, strained social relationships, and financial obligations. This study examined whether marriage and perceived social status can mitigate financial stress, which is deleterious to the well-being of FIIs. We also assessed whether sociodemographic factors influenced financial stress across marital status. We used cross-sectional data from 588 FIIs, collected in the 2023 Survey of Racism and Public Health. The financial stress outcome (Cronbach's [

Frequent social regroupings affect corporal and reproductive development, metabolic status, and behavioral time budget in dairy heifers.

We aimed to evaluate the corporal and reproductive development, metabolic status, and behavioral patterns of resident dairy heifers subjected to social regroupings (SR). Holstein replacement heifers (153.3 ± 16.1 kg, 11 months old) were homogeneously allocated to: 1) Control (CON; n = 14 resident + 5 "permanent") and 2) Regrouped (RG; n = 14 resident + 5 "changing"). "Changing" heifers were exchanged for 5 novel heifers every 21 d over 205 days (total = 10 SR). At each SR, body weight, wither height, body condition score (BCS), eating, ruminating, lying and standing behaviors were recorded, an

Social contact behaviors are associated with infection status for Trichuris sp. in wild vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus pygerythrus).

Social grooming in the animal kingdom is common and serves several functions, from removing ectoparasites to maintaining social bonds between conspecifics. We examined whether time spent grooming with others in a highly social mammal species was associated with infection status for gastrointestinal parasites. Of six parasites detected, one (Trichuris sp.) was associated with social grooming behaviors, but more specifically with direct physical contact with others. Individuals infected with Trichuris sp. spent significantly less time grooming conspecifics than those not infected, and time in di

Prenatal socioeconomic status and social support are associated with neonatal brain morphology, toddler language and psychiatric symptoms.

Few studies have assessed the association of parental socioeconomic status (SES) with brain measures in neonates, at a time when exposure to the postnatal environment is minimal. Social support may buffer the adverse consequences of SES, and has been associated with better cognitive - emotional development in children. We studied the association of prenatal SES and social support with neonatal brain structure, and toddler cognition, and psychiatric symptoms. In a sample of 37 healthy neonates, we correlated a measure of SES and marital/partner status (an index of social support) with morpholog

Physical activity, social support and socio-economic status amongst persons living with HIV and AIDS: a review.

Physical activity can be used for the effective and comprehensive management of HIV and AIDS. Social support and socio-economic status (SES) are two factors that shape physical activity behaviours. Individuals of low SES carry a disproportionate burden of the HIV and AIDS epidemic. In addition, limited resources constitute socio-ecological barriers predisposing such individuals to physical inactivity. The purpose of this narrative review is to examine the available literature on physical activity, social support and SES and to generate recommendations for designing and implementing physical ac

A Survey Evaluating Burnout, Health Status, Depression, Reported Alcohol and Substance Use, and Social Support of Anesthesiologists.

BACKGROUND: Burnout affects all medical specialists, and concern about it has become common in today's health care environment. The gold standard of burnout measurement in health care professionals is the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS), which measures emotional exhaustion, depersonalization (DP), and personal accomplishment. Besides affecting work quality, burnout is thought to affect health problems, mental health issues, and substance use negatively, although confirmatory data are lacking. This study evaluates some of these effects. METHODS: In 2011, the American

Associations between subjective social status and DSM-IV mental disorders: results from the World Mental Health surveys.

IMPORTANCE: The inverse social gradient in mental disorders is a well-established research finding with important implications for causal models and policy. This research has used traditional objective social status (OSS) measures, such as educational level, income, and occupation. Recently, subjective social status (SSS) measurement has been advocated to capture the perception of relative social status, but to our knowledge, there have been no studies of associations between SSS and mental disorders. OBJECTIVES: To estimate associations of SSS with DSM-IV mental disorders in multiple countri

Dominance hierarchies and social status ascent opportunity: anticipatory behavioral and physiological adjustments in a Neotropical cichlid fish.

In this work we characterized the social hierarchy of non-reproductive individuals of Cichlasoma dimerus (Heckel, 1840), independently for both sexes, and its relationship to the opportunity for social status ascent. Female and male individuals who were located on the top rank of the social hierarchy, ascended in social status when the opportunity arose, therefore indicating that dominance is directly correlated with social ascent likelihood. Dominance was positively correlated with size in males but not in females, suggesting for the latter a relationship with intrinsic features such as aggre

Marital status and cohabitation during pregnancy: relationship with social conditions, antenatal care and pregnancy outcome in France.

A survey of a representative sample of 5508 births in France in 1981 permitted the study of social characteristics of pregnant women, the medical care they received during their pregnancy and their pregnancy outcome, as a function of their marital status and whether or not they lived with the father of the child. Unmarried women living with the father (n = 412) like unmarried women living alone (n = 171), were more often younger, having their first baby and had a lower educational level than did married women living with the father (n = 4590). However, among the unmarried women, those living a

Current status and associated factors of social avoidance in postoperative breast cancer patients: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Compared with the general population, breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy after surgery are more likely to suffer from multiple psychological problems. Social avoidance, as a negative psychological factor, aggravates anxiety and depression, which in turn reduces patients' socialization ability and seriously affects their spirituality, mental health, physical health, and ability to cope with the disease. However, research on social avoidance and distress in breast cancer patients remains limited. In light of the growing public concern about these issues, this study aimed

Update: Social Determinants of Risk-Taking Behaviors Associated with HIV Positive Status among Black/African American Women.

This qualitative explanatory study investigated risk-taking behaviors of sex practices and drug use associated with HIV-positive status among African American women. This study was conducted using a non-probabilistic sample of 252 African American women aged from 18 to 65. The data was analyzed using a t-test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and stepwise regression. Four research hypotheses were tested: Ha1: The HIV-positive group will exhibit significantly higher risk-taking behaviors compared to the HIV-negative group. Ha2: HIV-negative group will possess significantly greater knowledge of

Social Factors, Dietary Intake and the Nutritional Status of Community-Dwelling Chinese Older Adults: A Scoping Review.

Background/Objectives: Malnutrition can lead to poor health outcomes and mortality. Older adults are at a high risk of malnutrition due to age-related changes in their body and their dietary intake. The dietary intake of community-dwelling older adults can be affected by material and biopsychosocial factors. Conventional interventions often omit the influence of social factors on dietary intake-a particularly significant omission in the Chinese culture which sees eating as a social affair. This scoping review aimed to identify and understand the social factors associated with the dietary intak

Status of mental and social activities of young and middle-aged patients after papillary thyroid cancer surgery.

BACKGROUND: Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is prevalent among younger populations and has a favorable survival rate. However, a significant number of patients experience psychosocial stress and a reduced quality of life (QoL) after surgical treatment. Therefore, comprehensive evaluations of the patients are essential to improve their recovery. METHODS: The present study enrolled 512 young and middle-aged patients diagnosed with PTC who underwent surgery at our institution between September 2020 and August 2021. Each participant completed a series of questionnaires: Generalized Anxiety Disorde

Long-term impacts of socioeconomic status and childhood trauma on depression in older adults: social work strategies.

This study explores the impact of life course socioeconomic status (SES) and childhood trauma on depressive symptoms in Chinese middle-aged and older adults, while also examining the role of chronic diseases and implications for social work practice. Using data from 9,942 participants, structural equation was established to investigate these relationships. Results reveals that low childhood SES positively affects depressive symptoms through low SES in mid-to-late life (std. β = 0.168, p < .001), and domestic child abuse negatively impacts depressive symptoms through low SES in mid-to-late life

Employment Status Following Heart Transplantation: Data From the Danish Nationwide Social Service Payment Register During 20 years.

Most studies on vocational rehabilitation after heart transplantation (HTX) are based on self-reported data. Danish registries include weekly longitudinal information on all public transfer payments. We intended to describe 20-year trends in employment status for the Danish heart-transplant recipients, and examine the influence of multimorbidity and socioeconomic position (SEP). Linking registry and Scandiatransplant data (1994-2018), we conducted a study in recipients of working age (19-63 years). The cohort contained 492 recipients (79% males) and the median (IQR) age was 52 years (43-57 yea
