Association of social worker-assessed psychosocial factors with 30-day hospital readmissions among hemodialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: Evidence regarding the effect of psychosocial factors on hospital readmission in the setting of hemodialysis is limited. We examined whether social worker-assessed factors were associated with 30-day readmission among prevalent hemodialysis patients. METHODS: Data on 14 factors were extracted from the first available psychosocial assessment performed by social workers at three metropolitan Atlanta dialysis centers. Index admissions (first admission preceded by ≥30 days without a previous hospital discharge) were identified in the period 2/1/10-12/31/14, using linked national admin

Fair pay, performance optimizer, or status marker? The social meaning of remuneration for India's women community health workers.

What kind of remuneration is appropriate for a Community Health Worker? The literature on CHW incentives largely emphasizes their impact on worker motivations and on health outcomes, including on non-incentivized outcomes. While these are relevant, they miss what Viviana Zelizer calls the social meaning of money, that is, how social relations and cultural values shape and constrain the qualitative life of different monies. I draw on 12 months of ethnographic fieldwork, including 80 interviews, conducted in 2018-19 in north India on Accredited Social Health Activists or ASHAs, the world's large

[Rehabilitation of Health Care and Social Workers after COVID-19 Infection: Results of a Retrospective Cross-sectional Study].

During the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers showed a twofold increased risk of infection. Many still report persisting symptoms a few months after initial infection such as fatigue, headaches and cognitive impairment, often resulting in incapacity to work and reduced ability to carry out tasks of everyday life. When such symptoms persist for longer than three months, it is known as post-covid-syndrome (PCS). Only a few studies have evaluated outpatient rehabilitation for post-covid conditions. The objective of this study was to assess patient experience and satisfaction with rehabilitatio

A strengths-based analysis of social influences that enhance HIV testing among female sex workers in urban Indonesia.

UNLABELLED: Background HIV prevalence among female sex workers in Indonesia remains high and large proportions of female sex workers have never been tested for HIV. International research highlights the importance of community-led strategies to increase HIV testing in this population. Little qualitative research has been conducted to address these issues in Indonesia or other Asia-Pacific countries. This paper documents social influences that enhance HIV testing among female sex workers in urban Indonesia. METHODS: This was an interpretive qualitative study in Yogyakarta, Denpasar and Bandung

Self-competence in death work among health and social care workers: a region-wide survey in Hong Kong.

BACKGROUND: According to the Quality of Death Index, Hong Kong is lagging behind many other Western and Asian countries in the category of palliative and healthcare. To ensure the provision of high-quality palliative care, it is important to explore the self-competence of health and social care workers in coping with death work including palliative care. This region-wide study aims to assess the level of self-competence with a validated Self-Competence in Death Work Scale (SC-DWS) and examine its correlates. METHODS: The SC-DWS was administered to a cross-sectional convenience sample of healt

Impact of social media use on influenza vaccine hesitancy among pediatric healthcare workers: The mediating role of 3Cs.

Evidence on the association between social media use and vaccine hesitancy has been inconsistent, and research on the mechanisms underlying this relationship remains limited. This study aimed to examine whether confidence, complacency, and convenience (3Cs) mediate the association between social media use and influenza vaccine hesitancy. An online questionnaire survey was conducted among 464 pediatric healthcare workers in a tertiary hospital in December 2024. The questionnaire assessed social media use (including trust and exposure), vaccine hesitancy, and the 3Cs. Reliability and validity we

Palliative Social Workers' Contributions to Cultivating Prognostic Awareness: A Qualitative Study Using the Prognostic Awareness Impact Scale Framework.

BACKGROUND: Prognostic awareness is central to informed, value-concordant care for patients with serious illness. Although often conceptualized as cognitive understanding of a time-based prognosis, emerging research highlights prognostic awareness as a multidimensional process involving cognitive understanding, emotional coping, and adaptive response. Palliative social workers may be especially well positioned to support this process, yet their specific skills and strategies remain understudied. OBJECTIVE: To describe the strategies hospital-based specialty-level palliative social workers use

Depressive Symptoms Among South African Construction Workers: Associations with Demographic, Social and Work-Related Factors, and Substance Use.

The construction industry exhibits higher rates of depression in its workforce compared to other industries. This study investigates the association between the prevalence of depressive symptoms and various demographic (e.g., age, ethnicity, education), social, and work-related factors (e.g., relationship status, living environment, work situation) and behavioural factors (e.g., alcohol and drug use). Survey data collected from 496 male construction workers working in the Western Cape were analysed using binomial logistic regression to determine the associations. The results showed that 'Black

Social workers' perspectives on anti-Black racism and parenting outcomes for incarcerated pregnant women with substance use histories.

SUMMARY: Black women who use substances face significant barriers to accessing resources and parenting their children, largely as a result of interactions with the criminal legal, child welfare, and healthcare systems. While extensive literature has demonstrated how structural racism and punitive policy approaches underpin the operation and impact of these systems, minimal attention has been paid to how social workers approach child, maternal, and family well-being when interacting with clients who use substances and have been incarcerated. To address this gap, we conducted semi-structured qua

Identity management processes, contextual supports and barriers, and substance use among sexual minority workers: A social cognitive lens.

Sexual minority people report substance use at higher rates than their heterosexual peers. Workplace sexual identity management, defined as the process by which sexual minority persons disclose or conceal their identities at work, may exacerbate substance use under stressful conditions, such as when faced with incivility. However, there is a paucity of research on the relation of the work environment to sexual minority workers' substance use. The present study used the social cognitive career self-management model as a conceptual framework to examine two aspects of the work environment (positi

Factors affecting mental illness and social stress in hospital workers treating COVID-19: Paradoxical distress during pandemic era.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has affected all countries in the world. Hospital workers are at high risk of mental illness, such as anxiety and depression. Furthermore, they also face many social stresses, such as deterioration of human relations and income reduction. Apart from mental illness, these social stresses can reduce motivation and lead to voluntary absenteeism, which contribute to a collapse of medical systems. Thus, for maintaining medical systems, it is crucial to clarify risk factors for both mental illness and increased social stress among hospital workers.
