Ingestion of immature, environmentally stressed, or cultivar-specific Solanum species (particularly the potato) has been previously associated with gastrointestinal and neurological symptoms caused by solanaceous steroidal glycoalkaloids (SGAs). We report on two geographically, temporally disparate outbreaks of poisoning by susumber berries (Solanum torvum- Solanaceae) and on detection of alkaloids not present in non-toxic berries. Five family members in New York City participated in a traditional evening meal containing Jamaican susumber berries. All those consuming berries were symptomatic t

Capsicum annuum is a Solanaceae crop that is sensitive to cold, which affects its growth and development upon prolonged exposure and ultimately reduces yield. In response, a complex regulatory network of cold-responsive genes is activated. Earlier studies have shown that SnRKs play a positive role in enhancing cold tolerance in different crops, including peppers; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms and downstream targets have yet to be fully elucidated. In this study, yeast hybrid screening using CaSnRK2.4 identified a potential interacting partner CaPDX1. The interaction between CaPD

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), a member of the Solanaceae family, originates from South America and is currently cultivated worldwide. In tropical regions, it grows as a perennial plant, whereas in temperate and subtropical climates, it is cultivated as an annual because of its sensitivity to frost. Tomato fruits are an important source of bioactive compounds, including carotenoids, polyphenols, minerals, and vitamins. Their widespread consumption and status as one of the most commonly consumed horticultural crops worldwide make tomatoes an important dietary source of these compounds. Tomat

The NRC immune receptor network has evolved in asterid plants from a pair of linked genes into a genetically dispersed and phylogenetically structured network of sensor and helper NLR (nucleotide-binding domain and leucine-rich repeat-containing) proteins. In some species, such as the model plant Nicotiana benthamiana and other Solanaceae, the NRC (NLR-REQUIRED FOR CELL DEATH) network forms up to half of the NLRome, and NRCs are scattered throughout the genome in gene clusters of varying complexities. Here, we describe NRCX, an atypical member of the NRC family that lacks canonical features of

Rider is a novel and recently active Ty1-copia-like retrotransposon isolated from the T3238fer mutant of tomato. Structurally, it is delimited by a duplication of target sites and contains two long terminal direct repeats and an internal open reading frame, which encodes a Ty1-copia-type polyprotein with characteristic protein domains required for retrotransposition. The family of Rider elements has an intermediate copy number and is scattered in the chromosomes of tomato. Rider family members in the tomato genome share high sequence similarity, but different structural groups were identified

Foods, principally from plants in the family Solanaceae, and a number of teas were examined for the presence of nicotine. Dietary nicotine would give rise to cotinine in urine and compromise estimates of exposure to tobacco smoke that depend on urinary cotinine. All foods were homogenized, extracted and analysed for nicotine and cotinine by gas chromatography with nitrogen-sensitive detection (GC) and/or GC/MS (mass spectrometry). Weak acid and aqueous extracts of the teas were analysed in a similar manner. Nicotine was not detected (less than 1 ng/ml of extract) in egg plant or green pepper.

Athenaea fasciculata belongs to the Solanaceae family and is a promising source of cytotoxic withanolides known as aurelianolides A and B. In the last years, the pharmacological studies of these aurelianolides on different leukemia cell lines have stimulated new studies on their potential as alternative candidates for new lead anticancer drugs. However, the obtention of these two pure compounds by traditional preparative is a costly and long time-consuming process, which is performed in several steps. This study aimed to propose a straightforward approach for isolating aurelianolides A and B u

Atropa belladonna (A. belladonna), commonly known as deadly nightshade, is a poisonous plant belonging to the Solanaceae family. The toxic effects of A. belladonna are attributable to its alkaloid content, which possesses potent anticholinergic properties. These alkaloids are responsible for the plant's toxicity and can cause a range of adverse effects in humans and animals upon ingestion or contact. In this report, we describe two atypical cases of A. belladonna poisoning resulting from accidental ingestion of the plant's raw leaves, which were referred to the emergency room of a poisoning ce

Two acetylcholinesterases (AChEs) are present in Bemisia tabaci (BtAChE1 and BtAChE2). A conserved AChE mutation conferring organophosphate (OP) resistance (F392W in BtAChE1) is saturated in field populations despite its potential fitness cost, and a highly conserved amino acid residue forming the backdoor of AChE is substituted with a unique amino acid (Y390N in BtAChE1) in B. tabaci. Thus, the roles and relationships of the two amino acid substitutions in the evolutionary adaptation of B. tabaci remain to be elucidated, and little information is available on the catalytic and molecular prope
