Physiological and anatomical studies have suggested that alligators have unique adaptations for spatial hearing. Sound localization cues are primarily generated by the filtering of sound waves by the head. Different vertebrate lineages have evolved external and/or internal anatomical adaptations to enhance these cues, such as pinnae and interaural canals. It has been hypothesized that in alligators, directionality may be enhanced via the acoustic coupling of middle ear cavities, resulting in a pressure difference receiver (PDR) mechanism. The experiments reported here support a role for a PDR

Monaural hearing induces auditory system reorganization. Imbalanced input also degrades time-intensity cues for sound localization and signal segregation for listening in noise. While there have been studies of bilateral auditory deprivation and later hearing restoration (e.g., cochlear implants), less is known about unilateral auditory deprivation and subsequent hearing improvement. We investigated effects of long-term congenital unilateral hearing loss on localization, speech understanding, and cortical organization following hearing recovery. Hearing in the congenitally affected ear of a 41

OBJECTIVES: Children with prelingual single-sided deafness (SSD) have difficulty understanding speech in noise and sound localization. They also have an increased risk of problems with their language and cognitive development. Moreover, untreated SSD can lead to cortical reorganization, that is, the aural preference syndrome. Providing these children with a cochlear implant (CI) at an early age may support improved outcomes across multiple domains. This longitudinal study aimed to identify those aspects of development that are especially at risk in children with SSD, and to determine whether e

Hyperexcitability and the imbalance of excitation/inhibition are one of the leading causes of abnormal sensory processing in Fragile X syndrome (FXS). The precise timing and distribution of excitation and inhibition is crucial for auditory processing at the level of the auditory brainstem, which is responsible for sound localization ability. Sound localization is one of the sensory abilities disrupted by loss of the Fragile X Mental Retardation 1 (Fmr1) gene. Using triple immunofluorescence staining we tested whether there were alterations in the number and size of presynaptic structures for t

Study of the characteristics, neural processing, and behavioral effects of communication sounds are an important focus of hearing research. The goal of this paper is to bring attention to another, rather neglected class of sounds that are omnipresent and that are arguably at least equally important for the daily survival of many species and have been in the evolution of the mammalian auditory system. All terrestrial mammals produce adventitious sounds when they locomote. The handful of studies that examined the characteristics of such sounds suggests that high-frequency transients are an impor

Conductive hearing loss (CHL) is known to produce hearing deficits, including deficits in sound localization ability. The differences in sound intensities and timing experienced between the two tympanic membranes are important cues to sound localization (ILD and ITD, respectively). Although much is known about the effect of CHL on hearing levels, little investigation has been conducted into the actual impact of CHL on sound location cues. This study investigated effects of CHL induced by earplugs on cochlear microphonic (CM) amplitude and timing and their corresponding effect on the ILD and IT

BACKGROUND: Head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) contain time and level cues and may be utilized in automatic algorithms to identify locations of sound, a desirable feature for next-generation hearing devices. Due to substantial variability in individual head sizes and ear acoustics, individualized HRTFs are expected to provide the best localization results. However, acquiring individualized HRTFs for each user is time-consuming.
METHODS: This study constructed three binaural and/or monaural algorithms suitable for hearing devices. A linear classifier was trained on HRTF databases from a s

INTRODUCTION: Sound localization relies on the neural processing of binaural and monaural spatial cues generated by the physical properties of the head and body. Hearing loss in one ear compromises binaural computations, impairing the ability to localize sounds in the horizontal plane. With appropriate training, adult individuals can adapt to this binaural imbalance and largely recover their localization accuracy. However, it remains unclear how long this learning is retained or whether it generalizes to other stimuli.
METHODS: We trained ferrets to localize broadband noise bursts in quiet co

Sound source localization relies on spatial cues, such as interaural time differences, interaural level differences, and monaural spectral cues. Individually measured head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) facilitate precise spatial hearing but are impractical to measure, necessitating non-individual HRTFs, which may compromise localization accuracy and externalization. To further investigate this phenomenon, the neurophysiological differences between free-field and non-individual HRTF listening are explored by decoding sound locations from EEG-derived event-related potentials. Spatial hearing relies on the encoding of perceptual sound location cues in space. It is critical for communicating in background noise, and understanding where sounds are coming from (sound localization). Although there are some monoaural spatial hearing cues (i.e., from one ear), most of our spatial hearing skills require binaural hearing (i.e., from two ears). Cochlear implants (CIs) are often the most appropriate rehabilitation for individuals with severe-to-profound hearing loss, with those aged 18 years of age and younger typically receiving bilateral implants (one in each ear). As exper

We studied the case of a 48-year-old woman who had resection of a pineal body tumor in terms of postoperative audiological function. Postoperative magnetic resonance imaging disclosed partial inferior colliculi destruction and medial geniculate body degeneration. A pure tone audiogram revealed only moderate sensorineural hearing loss, but her speech perception was totally impaired. The binaural sound localization function was also impaired. The auditory brain stem response (ABR) showed waves I, III, and V to have normal latencies. The amplitude of wave III was larger than that of wave V. These

The prevalence of unilateral deafness (SSD) or asymmetric hearing loss (AHL) among patients with hearing impairments ranges from 7.2% to 15.0%, indicating a relatively significant proportion. However, these individuals often overlook their hearing loss, resulting in delayed or inadequate treatment. This oversight can lead to a lack of binaural summation and squelch effect, as well as the head shadow effect, which can significantly impact their speech recognition and sound localization abilities, especially in noisy environments.Recently, a groundbreaking Sound Bite™ Pinyin® Bone Conduction Hea

The location of a sound source is derived by the auditory system from spatial cues present in the signals at the two ears. These cues include interaural timing and level differences, as well as monaural spectral cues generated by the external ear. The values of these cues vary with individual differences in the shape and dimensions of the head and external ears. We have examined the neurophysiological consequences of these intersubject variations by recording the responses of neurons in ferret primary auditory cortex to virtual sound sources mimicking the animal's own ears or those of other fe
