This paper reports results of further experimentation on a previously developed physical model of the vocal-fold mucosa [Titze et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 97, 3080-3084 (1995)]. The effects of vocal-fold thickness, epithelial membrane thickness, and prephonatory glottal geometry on phonation threshold pressure were studied. Phonation threshold pressures in the range of 0.13 to 0.34 kPa were observed for an 11-mm-thick vocal fold with a 70-micron-thick "epithelial" membrane for different "mucosal" fluid viscosities. Higher threshold pressure was always obtained for thinner vocal folds and thick

Developmental apraxia of speech is a disorder of phonological and articulatory output processes. However, it has been suggested that perceptual deficits may contribute to the disorder. Identification and discrimination tasks offer a fine-grained assessment of central auditory and phonetic functions. Seventeen children with developmental apraxia (mean age 8:9, years:months) and 16 control children (mean age 8:0) were administered tests of identification and discrimination of resynthesized and synthesized monosyllabic words differing in place-of-articulation of the initial voiced stop consonants

In 8 healthy probands, 6 patients with functional voice disorders, 3 singers and 3 deaf patients we studied the regulation of the voice parameters amplitude and fundamental frequency at the beginning of phonation. Analyses were performed under the following conditions: (1) normal conditions; (2) after troubling pharyngeal and/or glottic mucosal receptors by topical anaesthesia; (3) in the case of normal hearing during disturbance of the audiophonatory feedback mechanism by binaural masking, and (4) with a combination of the latter two situations. The results are discussed.

The foregoing represent only the most frequently used methods of assessing laryngeal disease. Many other methods show promise and are being evaluated in a few centers. Future laryngologists will be more sophisticated in diagnosing laryngeal lesions, including the use of computer analysis of methods in current use. As with all testing, the laryngologist should "tailor" the procedure to the individual patient and choose the diagnostic test that will incur minimal expense, time, discomfort, and danger to the patient.

Most normal speakers of English reduce the duration of the stem word vowel as words increase in length. Theoretically, this durational reduction reflects low-level linguistic knowledge. We posed two questions in this study: First, do speakers with apraxia of speech progressively reduce vowel durations as words increase in length, and second, do these vowel and word durations differ significantly from normal productions? We asked 11 apraxia of speech patients and 11 normal speakers to repeat three sets of three words which progressively increased in length, and we analyzed these productions spe

PURPOSE: Snoring is the most common symptom in patients experiencing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and is reported by up to 94% of those affected. It has already been extensively proven that snoring of patients with OSA acoustically differs significantly from habitual snoring. For this study, snoring in patients with OSA is analyzed by its different components: pitch, formants (F1-F3), formant-ratio F2/F1, harmonic-noise-ratio (HNR), spectral energy ratio (SER). The objective of this study is to determine whether one or more acoustic parameters exhibit significant alterations or distinctive fe

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to delineate the acoustic characteristics of the Laodan and Qingyi role in Peking Opera and define glottis closure states and mucosal wave changes during singing in the two roles.
METHODS: The range of singing in A4 (440 Hz) pitch in seven female Peking Opera singers was determined using two classic pieces of Peking Opera. Glottal changes during singing were examined by stroboscopic laryngoscope. The fundamental frequency of /i/ in the first 15 seconds of the two pieces and the /i/ pitch range were determined. The relative length of the glottis fissure and the relative max

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to compare acoustic characteristics of classical and popular female singers' vocal performances in Heitor Villa-Lobos' Melodia Sentimental (Sentimental Melody).
METHOD: Long-term average spectrum acoustic analysis and long-term voice onset time (VOT) were performed for two consonants /d/ in the first six verses of Melodia Sentimental sang by 10 professional singers: five classical (GC) and five popular (GP).
RESULTS: Classical singers presented prominence in the region of the frequencies between 2.5 and 3.5 kHz, not observed in the majority of the popular singers'

Three Music Theater vocal qualities ("chesty belt," "twangy belt," and "legit") were investigated in female singers at their overlap range, between F#4-D5 (~370-600 Hz). Six experienced Music Theater singers performed each quality on two different vowels ([e], [ɔ]). Audio and electroglottographic (EGG) signals were recorded as well as the vocal tract impedance. In chesty belt and twangy belt, singers systematically tuned the frequency of their first vocal tract resonance (R1) to the second harmonic (2f(0)) up to C5. R1 remained lower in frequency for the legit quality. No tuning of the second

The most serious complications of total thyroidectomy, in cases of widespread and invasive diseases, are mainly hypoparathyroidism and laryngeal inferior nerve palsy. Lesions of the external branch of superior laryngeal nerve instead, although less obvious than the those caused by the recurrent laryngeal nerve lesions, have been taken less into consideration. The frequency of this lesion varies from 14% to 20% of cases, although in reality it is underestimated; in fact, on the one hand it is difficult to assess this, and on the other, post-thyroidectomy dysphonia is often considered inevitable

OBJECTIVE: Patients of laryngeal cancer who have undergone the surgical removal of the entire larynx suffer the loss of phonation. Electrolarynx (EL) speech is the most commonly adopted alaryngeal phonation. However, EL speech is notorious of the sound quality being monotonic and robotic with the lack of pitch control and the presence of the radiated noise. This paper provides a review of modalities in EL speech as well as introducing the technologies to control the pitch and reduce the noise of the device.
METHODS: Improvements of EL speech quality have been divided into two parts: improving

In a single-layered, isotropic, physical model of the vocal folds, distinct phonation types were identified based on the medial surface dynamics of the vocal fold. For acoustically driven phonation, a single, in-phase, x-10 like eigenmode captured the essential dynamics, and coupled with one of the acoustic resonances of the subglottal tract. Thus, the fundamental frequency appeared to be determined primarily by a subglottal acoustic resonance. In contrast, aerodynamically driven phonation did not naturally appear in the single-layered model, but was facilitated by the introduction of a vertic

The barn owl, Tyto alba, extends its nictitating membrane (NM) in response to an air puff to the cornea or a mild para-orbital electrodermal shock. The NM extension habituated rapidly if the stimulus was repeated. Habituation was prevented by pairing the aversive stimulus with a sound. The sound stimulus did not, by itself, induce an NM extension. Repeated pairing of sound with the aversive stimulus caused the subjects to modify the duration of their NM extension, increasing the duration when exposed to longer aversive stimuli and decreasing in response to shorter stimuli. No transference of t

Cricket stridulums and calls are highly stereotyped, except those with greatly modified tegmina and/or venation, or "unusual" frequency, duration and/or intensity. This acoustic diversity remained unsuspected until recently, and current models of acoustic evolution in crickets erroneously consider this clade homogeneous for acoustic features. The few phylogenetic studies analyzing acoustic evolution in crickets demonstrated that acoustic behavior could be particularly labile in some clades. The ensuing pattern for cricket evolution is consequently extremely complex. We argue that: (1) phylogen

Changes in the oral cavity resulting from the loss of teeth and the ensuing reconstruction of a set of teeth by dentures (partial or complete) may cause changes in the speech and voice of the patient. The aim of the present investigation was to study the changes in speech and voice in patients suffering from teeth loss and the degree of speech improvement using dentures. Voice and speech parameters of a set of tested syllables were analysed in 10 patients at the 2nd Clinic of Stomatology. The analysis was carried out by means of an FFT, SoundForge 5.0 programme. Differently expressed acoustic

In 12 stuttering subjects the fluency enhancing effect of delayed auditory feedback (DAF) and frequency-shifted auditory feedback (FAF) was compared. The subjects had to read three passages consisting of 300 syllables under simultaneous auditory feedback, DAF (delay time: 53 ms) and FAF (frequency shift: -(1/2) octave). Stuttering frequency and percentage of discontinuous speech time were determined. Only under DAF a fluency enhancing effect in the mean values was observed, but not under FAF. However, in 4 subjects a reduction in stuttering frequency of 50% occurred. The conclusion is drawn th

The aim of the research reported in this paper is to formulate a set of acoustic parameters of the voicing source that reflect individual differences in the voice qualities of female speakers. Theoretical analysis and observations of experimental data suggest that a more open glottal configuration results in a glottal volume-velocity waveform with relatively greater low-frequency and weaker high-frequency components, compared to a waveform produced with a more adducted glottal configuration. The more open glottal configuration also leads to a greater source of aspiration noise and larger bandw

A number of studies have found that listeners are often able to differentiate the voices of young and old speakers accurately. Following an overview of structural and functional changes found in studies of aging larynges, this article examines current findings on maximum phonation duration, voice quality, vocal jitter/shimmer, spectral noise, and fundamental frequency. Aging can affect vocal pitch, loudness, and quality, but such effects are highly variable across the aging population. Therefore, a thorough voice and medical examination is needed to isolate voice problems caused by vocal abuse

Belting, a vocal technique typically cultivated in musical theatre singing, differs timbrally from operatic singing in many interesting respects. The underlying phonatory differences have not been previously investigated in detail. Yet, belting is frequently associated with disturbances of voice function. Articulatory and phonatory characteristics are investigated in a female subject who is a professional singer (co-author JL) trained in both the operatic and belting styles and in an intermediate vocal technique ("mixed"). This article presents data obtained from this subject by video-fiberopt

Taking advantage of the extended dynamic range of digital analysis of voice the H-Index represents the first proposed acoustical measure of glottal efficiency. "Hi" /hai/ was chosen to evaluate glottal efficiency since it provides an excellent test of glottal transformation from voiceless to voiced sound energy, the upper vocal tract having a neutral effect. Fifteen individuals with normal voices and 30 patients with hoarse voices were asked to say "hi." The power ratio of /h/ to /a/ was calculated from peak power of each measure from the power envelope. Voice quality had a highly significant
