Confusion of space and time in the flash-lag effect.

The apparent lagging of a short flash in the relation to a moving object, the flash-lag effect (FLE), has so far been measured mainly in terms of illusory spatial offset. We propose a method of measuring the perceived temporal asynchrony of the FLE separately from its perceived spatial offset. We presented a moving stimulus that changed its colour at a certain moment. The observer indicated, in two different tasks, where and when the colour change occurred in relation to a stationary reference flash. Results show that the perceived time of the colour change was not congruent with the perceived

Neural interaction between spatial domain and spatial reference frame in parietal-occipital junction.

On the basis of double dissociations in clinical symptoms of patients with unilateral visuospatial neglect, neuropsychological research distinguishes between different spatial domains (near vs. far) and different spatial reference frames (egocentric vs. allocentric). In this fMRI study, we investigated the neural interaction between spatial domains and spatial reference frames by constructing a virtual three-dimensional world and asking participants to perform either allocentric or egocentric judgments on an object located in either near or far space. Our results suggest that the parietal-occi

Perisaccadic perception of flashing stimulus: Spatial and temporal aspects.

When the eye moves through a constantly flashing light, we can observe the so-called phantom array-a line of light dashes. Our approach involves varying the flashing frequency of the light stimulus, aiming to find how the spatial and temporal characteristics of the phantom array depend on the frequency of light. The observers performed a 40° saccade across a flashing light and had to indicate the beginning and end of the phantom array, the length of a single dash, and the number of dashes they perceived. The trials of different flashing frequencies were varied randomly from 50 Hz to 3.5 kHz. W

Explaining attractive and repulsive biases in the subjective visual vertical.

Perception of gravity can be assessed by measuring the subjective visual vertical (SVV), the visually indicated spatial direction that appears earth-vertical to an observer. When the SVV is assessed in darkness while the observer is roll-tilted, it shows substantial biases. At tilts larger than 45°, the bias is attractive, that is, the visual indicator appears vertical when rotated toward the observer. At smaller tilts, however, a repulsive bias is observed. The attractive bias has been explained within the Bayesian framework as the effect of a prior for upright posture. The repulsive bias has

Bálint syndrome.

This chapter starts by reviewing the various interpretations of Bálint syndrome over time. We then develop a novel integrative view in which we propose that the various symptoms, historically reported and labeled by various authors, result from a core mislocalization deficit. This idea is in accordance with our previous proposal that the core deficit of Bálint syndrome is attentional (Pisella et al., 2009, 2013, 2017) since covert attention improves spatial resolution in visual periphery (Yeshurun and Carrasco, 1998); a deficit of covert attention would thus increase spatial uncertainty and th

Structural representations of fingers rely on both anatomical and spatial reference frames.

Finger agnosia refers to a neurological condition in which patients with left posterior parietal lesions fail to identify their fingers, despite having relatively preserved abilities in sensation and skilled action. This dissociation suggests that the structural body representations (BSRs) may be distinct from sensorimotor representations. However, recent research has reported that postural changes modulate representation of hand structure, revealing dynamic interactions between structural and sensorimotor body representations. However, it is unknown how and to what extent anatomical and spati

A spatial memory signal shows that the parietal cortex has access to a craniotopic representation of space.

Humans effortlessly establish a gist-like memory of their environment whenever they enter a new place, a memory that can guide action even in the absence of vision. Neurons in the lateral intraparietal area (LIP) of the monkey exhibit a form of this environmental memory. These neurons respond when a monkey makes a saccade that brings the spatial location of a stimulus that appeared on a number of prior trials, but not on the present trial, into their receptive fields (RFs). The stimulus need never have appeared in the neuron's RF. This memory response is usually weaker, with a longer latency t

Effects of Implied Motion and Facing Direction on Positional Preferences in Single-Object Pictures.

Palmer, Gardner, and Wickens studied aesthetic preferences for pictures of single objects and found a strong inward bias: Right-facing objects were preferred left-of-center and left-facing objects right-of-center. They found no effect of object motion (people and cars showed the same inward bias as chairs and teapots), but the objects were not depicted as moving. Here we measured analogous inward biases with objects depicted as moving with an implied direction and speed by having participants drag-and-drop target objects into the most aesthetically pleasing position. In Experiment 1, human fig

Evaluation of the Perceptual Characteristics of a Force Induced by Asymmetric Vibrations.

This paper describes the perceptual characteristics of a sense of a force induced by asymmetric vibration using a vibration speaker-type non-grounded haptic interface. We confirm that the vibration speaker generates a perceived force that pulls or pushes a user's hand in a particular direction when an asymmetric amplitude signal that is generated by inverting a part of a sine wave is input. In this paper, to verify the system with respect to various factors of force perception caused by asymmetric vibration, we conducted six experiments and the following results were obtained. (1) The force ve

Selecting and tracking multiple objects.

When interacting with the world, people can dynamically split attention across multiple objects in the environment, both when the objects are stationary and when the objects are moving. This type of visual processing is commonly studied in lab settings using either static selection tasks or moving tracking tasks. We describe performance limits that are common to both tasks, including limits on capacity, crowding, visual hemifield arrangement, and speed. Because these shared limits on performance suggest common underlying mechanisms, we examine a set of models that might account for limits acro

How Mountain Park Spatial Environments Affect Physiological and Psychological Perceptions of Young Adults Based on Real Time Sensor Monitoring.

Gathering spaces within urban parks serve as primary outdoor leisure venues, playing a critical role in facilitating social interaction and restoring the physical and mental well-being of this demographic. This study uses the example of Pipa Mountain Park in Chongqing, China to explore the psychological and physiological perceptual effects of spatial environmental characteristics on young adults in four typical gathering spaces: path platform, elevated point, viewing boundary, and key node. To this end, we employed onsite experimental methods using wearable ergonomic devices to collect partici

Audio-Tactile and Peripersonal Space Processing Around the Trunk in Human Parietal and Temporal Cortex: An Intracranial EEG Study.

Interactions with the environment happen within one's peripersonal space (PPS)-the space surrounding the body. Studies in monkeys and humans have highlighted a multisensory distributed cortical network representing the PPS. However, knowledge about the temporal dynamics of PPS processing around the trunk is lacking. Here, we recorded intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) in humans while administering tactile stimulation (T), approaching auditory stimuli (A), and the 2 combined (AT). To map PPS, tactile stimulation was delivered when the sound was far, intermediate, or close to the body. T

Evaluation of the Visually Impaired Experience of the Sound Environment in Urban Spaces.

Visually impaired people have unique perceptions of and usage requirements for various urban spaces. Therefore, understanding these perceptions can help create reasonable layouts and construct urban infrastructure. This study recruited 26 visually impaired volunteers to evaluate 24 sound environments regarding clarity, comfort, safety, vitality, and depression. This data was collected in seven different types of urban spaces. An independent sample non-parametric test was used to determine the significance of the differences between environmental evaluation results for each evaluation dimension

That's near my hand! Parietal and premotor coding of hand-centered space contributes to localization and self-attribution of the hand.

The ability to identify and localize our own limbs is crucial for survival. Indeed, the majority of our interactions with objects occur within the space surrounding the hands. In non-human primates, neurons in the posterior parietal and premotor cortices dynamically represent the space near the upper limbs in hand-centered coordinates. Neuronal populations selective for the space near the hand also exist in humans. It is unclear whether these remap the peri-hand representation as the arm is moved in space. Furthermore, no combined neuronal and behavioral data are available about the possible i

Seeing or not seeing where your hands are.

Previous findings have demonstrated the existence of a visual peripersonal space centered on the hand in humans and its modulatory effects on tactile perception. A strong modulatory effect of vision on touch perception was found when a visual stimulus was presented near the hand. In contrast, when the visual stimulus was presented far from the hand, only a weak modulatory effect was found. The aim of the present study was to verify whether such cross-modal links between touch and vision in the peripersonal space centered on the hand could be mediated by proprioceptive signals specifying the cu

Occlusion Effect on Action Space Distance Estimations in Optical See-Through and Video See-Through Augmented Reality.

With recent advancements in augmented reality (AR) display technologies, various head-mounted AR displays are now on the consumer market (e.g., Microsoft HoloLens 2, Meta Quest 3). However, there is limited knowledge on how these modern displays impact depth perception. Moreover, understanding the significance of occlusion's effects on action-space distance perception in AR is important, particularly for practical applications such as AR-assisted search-and-rescue operations. However, to our knowledge, no prior research has examined how varying occluder surfaces affect action-space distance es

Characterizing biased visuospatial perception in complex regional pain syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Patients suffering from complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) are increasingly shown to be affected by cognitive difficulties. While these cognitive symptoms were initially described as limited to the perception, representation and use of the body, that is, the somatic space, they were recently shown to also extend to the perception of extra-somatic space. CRPS patients seem indeed to pay less attention to visual stimuli occurring in the same side of space as their affected limb and especially those occurring close to that limb. The aim of the present study was to more precisely ch
